I joined a public game recently. Everyone was idling in town. So i figured I'd do the nice thing and open the rift to get things going. Everyone jumps in and less than 20 seconds into the rift I get kicked with no explanation. Yay...
That's sad, but not unexpected.
They can fix this when Josh pulls his head out of his ass and realizes that having rifts be the "endgame" creates more issues than it solves. Basically, you ran into three people who wanted to do rifts but didn't want to do bounties. If rifts weren't the "best place to farm" then you wouldn't see people actively trying to avoid paying keystones and, thereby, having to do bounties. This happens even in the larger rifting communities too.
It's a product of bad design that ENCOURAGES moochers.
it's bad upbringing andlaziness coupled with flat out rudeness. Even with me not being in a position to experience this, it is something that needs fixing or theactions of bottom feeding mouthbreathers like that will ruin the reputation of a great game and run off anyone and everyone that doesn't wanna deal with it. That translates to loss of paychecks over at Blizzard.

There a bunch of issues with Public games, but I think this one could be solved rather easily. If they are going to keep the 1 person pays to open the rift mechanic, then that person should NOT be able to be kicked from the game. Even if they are undergeared/leeching/afk whatever, they paid for that rift, and shouldn't be able to be vote kicked. This could become a problem in RIF communities, as people could just stick around and not leave after opening the rift, but then they just get blacklisted. Also, many of the potential solutions to the public game problems would likely adversely affect RIF anyway.
Why isn't it set up so when a rift is open everyone contributes a key? Wouldn't that solve some of the issues?
I had the same exact thought. Of course the price would need to be lowered to 4 keys, no biggie. The other issue is how to deal with a 4 person party with a guy that has zero keys. This could be an undue hardship for players that just want to roll with friends...maybe he used his already and the group of friends just wants to keep going. They'd have to kick a friend out. Sounds kinda lame. And then there's pub games. So they'd have to have a system in place to display who exactly contributed and who doesn't have a key.
Sadly, they can't do much here but have the rift begin an auto-close sequence as soon as all party members leave the rift, after the RG is down ofc.
I'm just going to say it......don't play pub games if you can't mitigate the inherent issues that come with operating as a team with strangers. At some point, the responsibility for team management has to be incumbent upon the players as a group.
I wouldn't blame Blizzard at all for just leaving this one alone. They can't hand-hold us to such an extent as to make jerks disappear.
What if they changed it so no one could enter the rift without contributing some keys, and each person had to talk to Orek themselves? That'd solve everything except people sitting afk for free experience. For that I, you'll have to keep the kick mechanism. The only thing I'd change about that is maybe you get a refund of your keys when kicked to address the times you get kicked for no reason.
How about everyone has to pay the full price for a rift. As soon as the player enters the rift the toll is paid.
People would complain because it's a nerf to co-op, but it's easily the best solution. It would eliminate almost every form of co-op fragment leeching out there with one, fairly simple, change. You want access to a rift, you pay. You don't pay you don't play.
Really guys, I've been in a great many public games. As I've said in a number places on this forum recently, I primarily play with strangers in public games. It isn't nearly as bad as what many of you make it out to be. Not even close.
However ... there are issues that should be addressed in my opinion. I'm not against finding efficient farming methods, though I'm somewhat on the fence in terms of how much I really like the idea of farming 500+ shards an hour, but I can always choose not to do that. In fact, I have yet TO do that, so I'd have to first start before I'd even really need to consider the long term effects on my enjoyment of farming gear in a gear farming game.
That said, my opening this thread was in regards to people that act like total jerks, like doing things like claiming quest rewards for having done spit, then immediately leaving to, perhaps, leech off the very next public game party. The fact is we, as players, have zero way to deal with this - OTHER than to not use public games. Which, as some other posters have pointed out, is a pretty terrible solution.
Yea, it's an easier, more accessible, less frustrating solution for some - until such time Blizzard fixes it (if they do). I agree with that also. However simply showing up and saying something like, "Don't play in public games. Stop complaining. Nothing to see here, move along." isn't a positive. It's not a solution. It's not witty, or funny, original, or in any way needed. In fact it's pretty much just a waste of bytes on a webpage. Sure, there are those who would say the exact same of what I'm writing now, or of what I wrote originally when opening this thread. Everyone has their own opinion of course.
Here's another thing about Public Games vs. Games with "Friends" (or clan or whatever): What happens when you want to play for 20.. 30.. 40 minutes, then, *OMG*, Take a 10 or 20 minute break, without it being some major inconvenience, and then *gasp* coming back to a video game and simply resuming by finding another game? Yea. You could do this with 'friends' or clans or a forum or what have you, after putting in the time to build up your own little personal network of fellow D3 players. No doubt there are some benefits.
But, again, as has been pointed out - responding to "problems in public games" with "don't play public games" is really not needed. It's just as easy - no, strike that - it's infinitely easier to simply not come to the forums, refrain from reading posts that are likely to be posts you feel are a waste of time or where you'd simply leave an awesome comment like "n00bs still doing it wrong?".

I think the better way to term it is; If you're not willing to deal with random jerks, stay away form pubs. It really is that simple. It matters not what measures Blizzard takes, there will always be jerks in pub games and they will always have their various methods of fucking with people.
You say that you really only want to play pub games, yet, you espouse hatred for the inherent issues that come with such. Seems a bit masochistic.
Sadly it's a pin point accurate "critique" of the public game system.
...
As for public games, from all the crap I hear ALL THE TIME, I've never bothered to join one.
Not sure these two sentences work together. You've never joined a public game, yet you're an expert on what's wrong with them? Got it.
What I think would be the bestsolution is if Blzz just made it so that the rift can only be closed by the person who actually opened it.
Then we have issues with the opener going AFK and/or leaving.
The only real issue I think should be immediately addressed is being kicked from your own game. Just imagine theprideobliterating bitch slap of creating agame, spendingyourtokens to open a rift and then getting kicked out for no reason. There's simply no excuse for that to even be possible.
Sadly it's a pin point accurate "critique" of the public game system.

Australia is simply the worst nation on Earth. I've never been there, but it looks pretty lame on TV.
Seriously though, pub games can be fun, a great way to make new friends. But it's a bit trying at times. I've actually had the pleasure of participating in a few really long pub games that had 3 awesome people in there with me. I honestly don't think many people mean to come off as irritating. They just lack proper etiquette.
In HC these bits of etiquette get ramped uptempo, as the stakes are far higher. Constantly running far ahead just because you can or constantly falling way behind because you're screwing around....ID'ing every leg you find along the way and making idle chit-chat about it......going back to town mid-rift to sell/salvage and obviously....going to town and AFK mid-action. All these things are big no-no's.
Sadly it's a pin point accurate "critique" of the public game system.

This is simple. Online gaming has been around perhaps longer than you've been around, I don't know, just a huge ASSUMPTION on my part.
What's also been around a long time is the formation of random people into teams where co operation is one of the necessary components to a successful outing as it were. ( My boy plays League of Legends and constantly rails about his "random" teams cmpetency).
So, I would humbly suggest I don't have to slam my finger in the door to know it's painful, and there are many well written descriptive threads on the pain of public gaming, even in here to see what's going on. The "group" I hang with is multigame, multiplatform and our main rule is you have to be 25+ years old to get in the clubhouse. Then there's the second rule, don't be an ass and you can stay in the clubhouse. There aren't any other rules.
So, yeah, I don't do public Diablo games. I did 'em in previous releases, played Diablo since it's inception, played Blizzard games before Diablo existed. So what?
Ruk's right, if you can't handle "pubs" lack of manners, don't play with them. I WOULD suggest you pound the hell out of Blizzard to fix it IF you really DO want to play pubs, but don't subject yourself to the crap going on if it's that bad. Pursue changing the system, and maybe pursue findng a few to play with that actually have a semblance of manners and respect for others. Life can be great. Or you can keep doing what you're doing and hope something changes (definition of insanity by some I'm told).
So be lazy, and whine about how bad it is, OR do something about it.
The statement that it's easier to avoid the issue and not play public games IS an accurate and sad cirtique of the public gaming system in Diablo 3 as it is today. There's way too many instances and examples. The only thing I might add is there are probably many instances of good public games as well, and they simply aren't geting any press as it were. Don't know, I can't find any " I had a great time in a Diablo 3 public game today" threads. I'd read 'em.
How about just making rifst so that they can't be closed when there are players still inside (or make it more than one players are still inside)?
If you don't wanna wait till the end I doubt the amount of xp and gold that you get at the closing matters that much.
Sadly it's a pin point accurate "critique" of the public game system.

Hey, that's cool. And if you'd stuck to just saying "from all the crap I hear ALL THE TIME, I've never bothered to join a public game", I'd have no argument.
It's just that you acted like you knew exactly what the specific problems were in D3 public games. And then admitted that you'd never joined one. Which made you look kind of.. well, kind of like you were shooting your mouth off from a position of ignorance.
p.s. this "multigame, multiplatform and our main rule is you have to be 25+ years old to get in the clubhouse" group.. I'm in a similar one. I'd laugh if it turned out I was arguing with you on the internet and we were actually guildmates.
