Diablo 3 seriously needs some type of reputation system which is based on votes. These people that join a public game, see that a rift is complete, speak to Orek, claim the rewards, and then immediately leave the game shouldn't be able to get away with that trolling, self serving, complete jerk-off behavior.
Blizzard really needs to put something in place which will do something along the lines of:
After X number of votes, you are banned from public games for 72 hours.
Agree for both leechers and for the jags who come in close a rift, say something so clever, like newbs and then leave. Had it happen multiple times. Luckily I've found some cool peeps from pub games, but its far and few in between. I almost think that there there should be an acknowledgement to whomever opened the rift to close it. Too many times people pop up and close it. Some might want to clear the rest of the levels, and some don't. This would at least give an option. Only issue is then you would have someone being a dick and not letting it close. So then you would have to implement something to combat things like that. I also believe that people who put up the rift portals should end up getting extra blood shards, as lots of pub games people stand around like mooches waiting for that rift.
Wouldn't that be another tool for jerks in public games to use?
Yeah, probably would need more than my 5 seconds of thought put into it, but the sentiment remains the same. This is a different "team", I guess.. so.. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something about various issues at some point.
The previous group figured a 10+ year old trade window exploits didn't need a redesign.
Honestly, nothing is perfect. However, massive, glaring problems that go ignored is just inexcusable.
I still don't know how in the world WD pet spam made it live. At least they reigned it in in patch 2.05. And, yes, my "main" has been a WD since RoS.. though I just started playing my 70 crusader last night. =)
You have to learn to deal with jerks, it's a valuable life skill. Jerks in video games are no different than bullies. It's the same phenomenon.
We can't make jerks go away with technology. All this reminds me of the anti-bullying campaigns we see today. A proposal; What if a parent actually managed to create a bubble around their precious child to protect them from bullies throughout their school years? Well.....they would do a tremendous disservice to their child, because now their child will grow up and have no idea how to deal with bullies as an adult.
We get bullied in traffic on the way to work. We get bullied at work. We get bullied by lovers. We get bullied by friends. We get bullied at the store .......and yes, we even get bullied in online video games.
Don't look toward technological recourse. Learn to deal with them appropriately. Leave them alone, where they belong. ....alone.
I've found joining a rifting community has helped quite a lot as you will join a party where you can gear check before joining/inviting and usually communication is much better regarding your intentions, so you can avoid leechers. Joining public games has become a shit show after the 'I need instant gratification that primarily benefits me' entitled people came back for the leg buff.
Joining communities or having an extended friends list is NOT comparable to having a working LFG system. Cries to "Just play with friends" are bullshit responses to critique of hte public game system, which as it is currently designed leaves a couple of "loopholes" for the playerbase to attempt to exploit
One is the closing of rifts as soona s you enter the game and leaving immediately afterwards. The other is the 4 way mexican standoff of "Who is going to open this rift for me"
Easiest solution in my mind is to have a "Boss fight" pop up window for opening a rift which asks for all 4 ppl to accept; and similarly to close the rift. Shifting the responsibility to the group will engender a more group-responsible attitude towards these features. YES there wil still be trolls, YES there will still be leechers; but at least you will be made more aware of their intentions before they get any leeching done. Giving people the option to kick a potential leech before the run starts; should make life less profitable for te leechers and (with any luck) reduce the amount it happens a little.
As a combination of everyone's ideas - maybe have Orek only respond to people who killed the Rift Guardian?
Had it a few times myself and while it does not completely ruin my evening, it does make me want to hunt them down and give them some Voodoo which makes the rest of their gaming session lag at about 600ms.
Make the game PvP free and then track them down and camp their corpses.Much like ruksak said. I would rather deal with them personally than have a technology do it for me.
but Blizzard will never do that, so I guess something like gearcheck tool would do. Vote is a bad idea. CS:GO added voting, and guess what. Good guys are usually the ones voted out, by jerks.
How do you propose to "check" the requirements? By reaching exact stats? But there are different builds and playstyles - so you can keep some really good players from entering the game.
Just imagine: the system requires from you 1mil dps to enter T6 game. Then some players can stack CHC/CHD/AS/main stat and enter the game being a cannonglass who dies every 5 seconds. Would it be wise?
Another situation: you've got decent all-rounded stats and enter the game. And yet somehow your playstyle/build doesn't allow you to act effectively.
IMO good solutions is the following: Blizz shall implement some internal system which counts total damage made by player in rift. If the damage of ppl differs too much option to vote for kick for "weakest" person turns on so others can kick him. This way you can pretty soon kick leechers and think about ppl who make low dmg.

Sadly it's a pin point accurate "critique" of the public game system. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be hearing it so frequently.
Is it so hard to find 3 or 4 people to play with in the style and manner you're comfortable with? Socializing can be beneficial. It just takes effort.
As for public games, from all the crap I hear ALL THE TIME, I've never bothered to join one. I play with a group established from former games and we all get along great. Life IS good.

I think you misunderstood me. What I said was "When people have a complaint about an aspect of public games, telling them "Just don't use them" is a bullshit response" and by bullshit I mean "contributes nothing". There are plenty of ways blizzard can improve on the public game system; hell we saw some in the last patch; I dare say we will see more. Discussing possible solutions for issues regarding public games isn't aided by the "Derp just don't use them I don't" crowd The basic premise of public games is sound; and the majority of people who use it all have the same intentions. THere are just a few "design flaws" in some of the system designs that open the door to player abuse. Fixing these is perfectly possible.
2. Creator of game (runner) can remove anybody whenever they want (to avoid people afking in their game)
3. Make Rift Keys tradeable.
4. Players that join the game can not enter the rift without the opener (runners) permission.
This fixes alot of problems I think, by making keys tradeable the runner will get "paid" prior to people getting shards or any kind of reward, if someone doesn't want to pay up then the runner can just kick them and bring in somebody else. It also prevents afkers and any sort of leeching since you can't jump in and get credit for nothing without the runner allowing you in. Adds a little bit of downtime between tradeing and confirmation and all but it would help in the long run. Eventually the scammers will just leave and go do something else since they can no longer get away with being an arse.
True some problems could arise with any solution, but I don't see the runners being trollish. Why would you kick someone prior to the rift guardian dying that just gimps yourself by losing the strength in numbers buff to finding legendaries, as well as bonus xp. And you basically already have a 33.3% chance of having to "pay" for the rift anyway when it ends up being you that has to open. Same concept, different implementation. Way to be constructive though and just blanket disagree with everything because you don't like the idea.
Regarding the solution to "Closing the rift" the best solution I could think of would be to simply tune the rifts better so that there is very little time between the guardian and the end of the rift. Alternatively make the "Rift closing" be to use the 'portal stone' at the end rather than teleporting to town and speaking to Orek.
> Make it so the Rift Guardian is spawned by interacting with the portal stone *only when the bar is filled* <
So kill mobs till bar fills, find end of rift, summon boss, kill boss; exit.
Sad commentary ON the issue is, it's easier NOT to use it. I know that doesn't fix it but it speaks to the problem, and the lack of hope that the problem will be corrected, and even further, the options volunteered here ( always appreciated) speak as well to the complexity of trying to please everyone and cover all possible wants/needs while addressing the ever present "trolls" which are usually only an issue in the aforementioned "public" games.
While it doesn't fix the system, if you don't use it, it doesn't much matter, and many have done simply that, it's just easier.
I joined a public game recently. Everyone was idling in town. So i figured I'd do the nice thing and open the rift to get things going. Everyone jumps in and less than 20 seconds into the rift I get kicked with no explanation. Yay...

my enchantress > 3 complete under gear strangers that might kick me if i didn't carry then fast enough.
