So I just leveled a WD and wanted to transfer items from my Wiz to WD. I didn't have space in my stash, so I just dropped the items on the ground in a private game with a friend in it. As soon as I left the game (while still in the party) all the items disappeared with the exception of the old Witching Hour that I had.
Every item but one was lost. There is no way to get these items back, due to Blizzard having no willingness to assist in the issue. Careful that the same doesn't happen to you!

Playing a Wizard. Looking for Demon Hunters to play with.
I'm not entirely shocked that it happened. Although one would not really expect it, because they are still account bound and you are still a part of the party/game. It's rather unfortunate.

why would you ever want to drop items on the ground and leave the game? Why didn't you try dropping a health potion on the ground and switch your character and see if its there first?
You could have easily empty your stash by moving those gears to your wiz's inventory and store the items you want to transfer in your stash afterwards
Interesting. Not to make light of the items/time you lost, but just to clarify... was the old Witching Hour an un-bound item? The game must consider items bound to an account as not existing without a character from that account in game... kind of silly, but better to pin down exactly the cause...
Could still pull it off in the future with a "mule" character to temporarily hold some things in the stash.
I'm sorry that you lost your stuff, OP, but... you really should've known better! The stash is in the game for exactly these kinds of reasons. Stash full? Clean it or transfer it to an alt. Never, ever, ever leave items on the ground unless you are giving them away.
I had this happen to me once. Sort of. Kind of a bizarre story.
About a month after the RMAH went up, I made a crazy amount of money on there and had it transferred to my PayPal account, but PayPal uses the short form of my name and Battle.net uses the full form of my first name. Blizzard went "Derp!" and locked my account to confirm that everything was as it should be. This would have been fine if just three days prior I had not had my wallet and ID stolen so I couldn't prove identity. I finally convinced Blizzard to just ban the RMAH access on the account and not the entire account and that I'd fax them my ID when I got my replacement. During the 3~ weeks of Blizzard telling me that they wouldn't unban me I bought a second copy of D3 and leveled another character because I actually enjoyed the game.
Well .. After they unbanned the first account I didn't really need the second, and while half asleep I went to trade the second account's Skorn to the first account. I dropped it on the ground and left the game before picking it up with the account I wanted it on. Oh I was horrified and I was furious at myself for not realizing that would happen. Later that day when I logged in however the item was back on the character that dropped it. Not sure how that worked out. It was definitely gone and then came back however. I was very surprised.
i think the moral of the story is that there isn't enough stash space. or better ways to transfer gear, like a mail system. We know something exists. because preorder wings
i was watching a video of a guy opening 150 something caches and just leaving them there while he finished. That gave me a ton of anxiety. If i see a beam, that's where I'm going.
Sucks, but... if you had never tried this before, why not try it first with 1-2 items that you could afford to lose just in case it didn't work?

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
dont leave the game with items on the floor number 1 rule in diablo since god nows when
It was common practice in D2, so it's really not that unreasonable for someone to think it would work.
This is D3 not D2, there's absolutely no reason to take that risk when there's a shared Stash. Empty the gear there and have the other character pick up from there. If it's too full to unload one character's full set of gear, make an alt to hold the unimportant stuff. You simply cannot drop stuff on the ground and not expect there's a chance they'll be lost. Even if the items don't disappear there's a chance while OP switches toon the friend DCs and game closes.
Blizzard made all stash shared between your characters exactly because of that. You have 280 (!) slots of shared inventory stash. Any items that are really important to you should never even touch ground, not for a second. Blizzard can't do more than offer you all the shared stash, and you prioritized hundreds of items (or whatever was in your stash) over the items you wanted to transfer. Blizzard won't help you with that, and sorry for losing those items, but I hope you learned your lesson.

Thanks, wasn't sure what game I was playing...
There's really no reason for the items to disappear when you leave. And considering past practices by players in the franchise, it's something that might come to people's minds.
I mean, how many 100s of items are littered everywhere in almost every game people play? Especially when you stop picking up rares. There's really no reason for this to happen. It's not like the game needs to purge these 5 or so legendaries he dropped on the ground to save space. It's not really expected functionality, IMO. It's probably just a bandaid fix because they had a bug where if the player left the game the items became unbound and their friends/party-mates could get them (I mean in the sense that it would pseudo-allow trading, not stealing, though it would allow that too), so they went with the cheap and easy fix.
And if you don't read blue posts all the time, or forums, or whatever, it'd be very easy to not know this information. So I can see how he made this mistake. Everyone comes in here all superior like "you're an idiot for doing this" but it's really not that unreasonable of a thing to try. The stash really isn't that big, if you play a lot and are a bit of a hoarder. There are a lot of cool legendaries with effects you might want to try in the future with a different build.
TBH I think I would have preferred a hybrid with the D2 style where each character had their own space, with one smaller, shared stash for safe transferring.
If your stash is full.. create a few "pack mules"... level one toons.. name one Jewelry, another Weapons, another Gear, Mats, etc....
Log into them and take out the right type of item you want to store long term. Easy to find which alt has your items you are looking for.. and keeps inventory open for working.
I don't understand why you didn't just move some items from your stash, to your inventory..... "Oh hey, their is this useful feature which allows me to access all my items from any character... BUT I'm going to drop them on the ground"
Just to clarify for some people, they did not disappear because he left the game thus causing them to be removed.... he left the game and the SERVER closed that game because it was most likely recently made. His friend happened to pick up the Legacy witching hour which isn't Bound to your account.
i dont get what the op mean even though i read the replies here. So u drop the items with a friend in game , leave game > switch char > goes back game and u cant see the items on the ground? U sure this is not a new game or ur friend stole everything?
