i have a question and wondered if anyone knew the answer! i have my normal gear which i always use for t1-2 farming but i have gathered cains set and a nagel ring and i have a topaz in a helm which gives me around 150% mf when im wearing my MF gear and i have been swapping the gear in my inventory before opening REP chests and before killing Rift guardians ill switch it to MF gear the last second. it seems im getting more legendaries lately doing this but i dont know if this works or not because it could just be random hahaha. i heard once you see a monster it factors your gear in before you kill them... but is that true ? and is that true for chests too?
THANKS!!!!

...Been playing Diablo Since Diablo 1 came out...and haven't stopped playing Diablo since...
Short answer: No, they changed the way chests interact with Magic Find somewhere around/over a year ago.
Long answer: No one really knows for sure. With the changes made to Magic Find and the addition of bonus legendary drop rates in Torment, we don't know if the change was reverted or even if the Torment rates affect chest drops.
As far as monsters go, I don't think they ever changed the way it works: MF is taken into effect when the item drops, not when you engage.
mf is nerfed to the ground...not worth of wearing...it diminishes for rare and legendary items(just leave mouse on MF in details there you have it) and i think they disabled it for chests long time ago
I agree about chests, but not about MF being totally worthless. It doesn't do MUCH, but it's important to remember that across thousands of monster kills, even a little bit helps out and can create a noticeable difference. I only run with the 50% from Cain's (mostly because I want the 50% experience bonus that comes with it) and I have noticed an increase in my legendary drops, albeit not a large one.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.

Pretty sure MF is nerfed so that your actual MF is decreased by 90% of what you have (read: wearing, it has no effect on the bonus from higher level gameplay). So if you have say 200% magic find, your only getting a multiplier of 1.2. Meaning that if legendaries are about 1 in 1000. That means they drop about .0001% Multiply that by the 20% bonus and you will get .00012% chance at a legendary.
So while you are correct in saying its not "worthless", its equates to roughly an extra two legendaries per 1000 that you get. So if you noticed an increase in legendary drops its just RNG and/or speculation.
as for chests, they stated long ago that they removed MF for chests. This was way back @ 60. They never said they added it back, so its fairly safe to assume that it doesn't work.
Regardless of the math and the fact that MF is drastically reduced (I knew that when I made my previous post), I maintain that an extra SOMETHING is far better than NOTHING. If it, indeed, really does work out to just two extra legendaries per 1000, then that's two extra legendaries for me.Also don't forget that while 50% by itself isn't a ton, it is added together with the multiplayer bonus, so at higher difficulties it can start to make a difference. I also have no doubt that I have some personal confirmation bias here.

I wish people who suffer from math retardness would stop trying to explain maths to others. How can you multiply drop chance by 1.2 and then conclude "roughly an extra two legendaries per 1000 that you get"?
No matter base drop chance, if you increase it by 20% you'll get 200 extra legendaries per 1000 that you get, not 2.
We clearly like Diablo 3 around here, so it stands to reason that we'd apply our many and varied life skills to the various elements of the game. Saying, "it's a video game..." is, quite frankly, insulting and belittling. It's what a parent would say to their child (which, of course, would only result in the child getting upset).
I could make post after post of porn images and flaming and then go on to say, "it's a forum..." but that doesn't really fly, does it? We love what we love, so we're going to enjoy it any way we desire. Don't put people down just because they like a video game.
Your message is: I like video games to escape. Was it possible to deliver that message without being kind of a jerk? I think the main thrust of your post was to be a jerk, not deliver the message that video games should not be parsed. Poor form chum.
14) What happened to magic find? Magic find was too powerful and became a requirement to find any loot in Diablo 3, which is why it was heavily nerfed: 100% magic find will increase the chance to find blue items by 100%, but only increase the chance for finding rare (yellow) items by 30% and for legendary/set items it is only 10%. That means that if you equip your character with 300% magic find, you will only get a 30% higher chance of finding a legendary. In addition to that, magic find has been removed entirely from paragon and from future rare gear (it still exists on pre-2.0.1 items, the so-called legacy gear). There are items in Reaper of Souls that have magic find as a stat (e.g., Nagelring or Cain's Set), but it is not worth it to sacrifice a lot of damage for a small amount of magic find.
So what this means is that your 50% does not relate specifically to your magic find of legendaries. In fact your 50% MF bonus is only a 5% bonus for legendaries. That means 5 more legendaries for every 100 chances you had before. The trade off here is if MF is worth the typical loss in dps. If you can get a minor bump in DPS from another item and end up killing 5% more enemies than with the MF item then the DPS is the way to go.
I can confirm that MF does not affect Chests, Breakables, Caches, or Items from Kadala. It only affects drops from enemies.

See, this is way less nerdish...kill faster = more legendaries, albeit at the whim of the almighty RNG (all hail)...less math the better, more killing the better...more squabbling less better... as to individual wants I'd say it's clear one's is of little consequence to others, to which I whole heartedly agree...
More keyboard, less calculator. Yes JKLimek used math, but hardly a calculator needed... ( and for those of you that want to interject that they use their keyboard instead of a calculator, SHAME on you...Shame!)
I say again, it's a game, less stress, less flaming, more gaming...
well idk if anyone ever did answer the guy, but mf doesnt affect chests and breakables anymore. nor is it shared with people in your party. all of this was nerfed back in 1.x.x and can be find on the d3 wiki if you google it.

20% increase is 20%. Not .2%.
