I understand that they are used in crafting and all - but I seem to have hundreds of marquise gems - is it worth combining them? what do you folks do with them

My long-term goal is to gear up all my twinks. Got 5 of them at 70 already, and they get all the "throwaway gear" that drops in groups and that no one needs. I got a really decent IK chest for my barbarian, so of course he's getting 3 maxed out rubies.
But it takes a lot of gold to upgrade that. From time to time I also craft amulets and rings - they're really cheap and help to "get rid" of gems.
I try to avoid the upgrade from marquise to imperial because of the 200k gold cost. If I find enough imperial gems, I save 5.4 million gold per max gem.
Upgrading from imperial to max however is not debatable, just do it (for the gems you use).
I can understand saving 5.4 mill is worth taking note of. But how many gems do you need for one char? 8, if you don't have any special legendary items with sockets. And how long will it take to find enough imperial to get 8 maxed out gems? I think it's worth combining marquise, besides there is not to many other things to spend gold on atm.
