If grinding gear is a drag to you, then you are playing the wrong game. The entire Diablo franchise is literally about gearing. You can still mess around with different builds and play styles on alts if you want. Gearing up alts with rares/crafted items is pretty easy, even if you are on a different class. If you want those build-changing legendaries, you should have to work for them. Expecting to be able to find powerful items for a class you aren't playing is a shortcut.
It's another one of those cases where the median is kinda bad, but the extremes are much worse. I like the idea of gearing up a character by playing it, but I like the practice of tearing through mobs with by best char and handing out good gear to my alts. IMO, smart loot does that well enough, especially given that each mainstat is shared by two classes already. It'd be nice if it was possible to nudge it down, but I suspect that's another case of not being able to please all the people all the time.
Fun fact: I found a socketed STR/VIT Scourge on my monk. The system works

If that's what you got from what I said then you need far better reading comprehension.
In practice it's easy to say "grinding for gear on each toon will increase longevity." But that doesn't really address the point of the problem. People don't have alts to replay EVERY LAST BIT of EVERYTHING. This is why you see people powerleveling and such. This is why you saw people complaining about running every toon through four difficulties. At some point re-doing EVERYTHING with EVERY SINGLE NEW CHARACTER CREATED gets tremendously boring and stale.
Not to mention it doesn't harm ANYONE if we're given some control over smart loot so that people who want to farm for an alt can and people who just want to play one character can. Or is this going to devolve into another "my way is the only right way to play the game" discussions where some kind of fanatical purist demeans anyone who doesn't play exactly like them?
Smart loot does skew drops towards your class by a pretty high percentage - I actually think maybe a little too high - but let's not get carried away and start acting like you will never ever get any drops suitable for an alt. Especially if said alt is not currently well geared.
I haven't played my Monk or Demon Hunter since RoS landed. But in the process of playing my other three classes to level 70, and doing some level 70 gameplay on them, I have a bunch of neat level 70 dex gear in my stash just waiting for those other two classes to ding. And that's not from excessive farming, either.
I do not care about playing the alts, its fun, not that hard to gear up for t1, but as I said, I had a sad feeling to left my wizard behind cuz I know I wont be able to find some specific gear for him while playing an alt .... and takes a lot time to grind specific items without a trade system, I can get tomorrow, and also never get it ... so .. as it takes a lot of time I would like to try the alts with the option to still find some good gear for my wiz, or any other class ...
the sad feeling, play wizard for a year and try to find the specific items or have fun with alts and never find the specific items, and other stuff ... was just sharing this feeling and .. well, ooking what ppl think about it ...
