The problem I'm facing is that when you play as someone who doesn't share the main attribute with your follower, finding upgrades for him is almost impossible, since in loot 2.0 the weapons that drop contain your main stat.
To put it simple, you play as a WD, your follower is a templar, something drops, it has always intelligence, your templar needs strength -> useless.
Possible solution, make 1/N items that drop be smarted out about your follower.
About a third of your loot is un-smart. Smart loot doesn't mean you find int items ONLY, it just means it finds them more frequently than the other stats, because your main progress is determined by the items you're wearing, not the items on your follower.
Gearing up followers and twinks is a problem with smart loot, and there's just no perfect solution. Some people are fine with 100% smart loot, some people want to get rid of it completely. Blizzard tuned it a lot and imho right now it's in a good spot.
In RoS there's an easy way out: gather up a lot of bloodshards, switch to your barb/crusader, and gamble for weapons, shields, and jewelry at Kadala. Or just change the main stat on your smart loot at the Mystic.
I see the issue OP is aiming at, but in my estimation, the best they could do for followers would be adding skill effects to follower tokens i.e. Legendary follower tokens. I'd like to see them prize our followers as having a more impactful array of utilities, foregoing the standard main-stat line which funnels us into seeking DPS from our followers.
There needs to be more synergy between followers abilities and the player's character skills.
As well, and to follow with the general 'play with friends' philosophy of D3, I would see the fun and advantage of allowing 1 party member to bring a follower into group play.
If you have an alt that has the same main stat then you can craft with that character. But that is more for the Weapon or shield.
I did not play in the RoS Beta but likely the Mystic will have options to re-roll stats.
What I would like to see is that all the slots the follower has a follower only item for that slot. So that way the Smart loot can work for them as well.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.

The problem isn't how much of your loot is "smart drop", the problem is that almost everything else that isn't tailored to your class almost never triggers smart loot.
Even if you do see the eventual Spirit Stone, a Crusader Shield, a 1H-Xbow, they almost _never_ roll with the smart loot system. They almost always roll with the "old system".
That makes it "feel" like everything that isn't suited to your class needs an insane amount of luck to roll "useable". This will be considerably worse once the AH is shut down =/
And even then, I still think Smart Loot triggers way too much. It definitely doesn't feel like 2/3 of the time. About half of my inventory is usually Wizard Hats/Sources or has Int/Vit, and only once every 5-6 town trips that I see the strange Spirit Stone or Mighty Weapon. It simply triggers too much (and then it triggers again to roll stats). It's taking away a HUGE chunk from the randomness of the game.
What I would like to see is that all the slots the follower has a follower only item for that slot. So that way the Smart loot can work for them as well.
This is probably the ideal solution considering that Smart Drops won't be going away, they'll just be tuned.
I find relics frequently enough that none of my followers are "hurting" in that slot, and since they're class-specific, they tend to roll properly. The other slots, though.... not so much. My scoundrel/templar is hurting for rings/necks/weapons, whereas my enchantress isn't.
I feel forced to haul around the enchanter on my WD as all the good drops I get are for her. She does 74k DPS (compared to my 102K), so I don't complain too much. We roll thru T2 very easily.
i use my followers for Magic Find XD i don't care about their stats as long as they give me that "small" extra chance at something good. I tend to get a lot more Yellows this way as well. Since this patch, Leveling ults or other classes is WAY MORE EASIER then it was before. you have hell fire ring, the Cain set (which is cheaper now on AH then ever ti's no longer billions of gold and gives you bonus exp %, possible leoric rings, not to mention all the gear that has extra monster xp and multi ppl party bonus. if you are really hurting for your followers, why not take a break with your main/60 and level. with paragon it's even better. But this is just a suggestion. don't get your undies uptight on my account.
Killed Diablo last night while leveling a new Wiz and he dropped a Str/Vit shield, which was perfect for my Templar, so off class stats do appear on rolls occasionally.

What exactly do you mean by that?
Are you saying you're seeing not-for-your-class items with e.g. two or more of strength/dex/int? Or that you're seeing items with super-low stat values rather than the new "tightened" range?
I haven't seen such things myself? I thought those changes were universal, not just for "smart loot" rolls?
I'm not seeing items that are for other classes (Spirit Stones, Mighty Weapons) that trigger the Smart "Roll" part of the system. They are rare already by themselves (and I don't like knowing that this is because a hidden system is holding my hand).
And then, when they drop, they usually roll very few primary affixes (1-2 mostly) and almost never Dex/Vit or Str/Vit. I've seen a ton of Wizard Hats with 300 Int/Vit, 6% crit chance and something else, but I don't think I've ever seen a Spirit Stone with Dex/Vit and any crit chance. It feels like the game sets these items to be "garbage" on purpose.
I don't know.... not really 100% sure about this... it isn't based on statistics or anything, it's based on how I feel, without data to back it up. It just feels like getting anything for your follower or your alternate is nearly impossible. But I'm willing to admitmaybe I need to play for longer and analyse it more rationally...
