Had a brief thought come to mind after posting a thread a moment or two ago about vendors....
In Patch 2.0.1, as well as Reaper of Souls, crafting is going to be a much more popular activity than it is now, as much of what gets crafted will be far more viable. However, what stops a player with level 70 characters and millions in gold from going to vendors, buying up items and salvaging each one for the crafting materials?
Sure, I suppose that would mean each individual material could cost over 6000 gold pieces each...but in terms of a player with a few billion in the bank? Or Bounty and Rift and Cursed Chest rewards netting people lots of gold just for finishing them?
What's 50k gold worth of blue or yellow items and converting them to salvage, if it means a decent chance of crafting upgrades or sidegrades?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling this out as an exploit and thinking it should be changed ASAP, like I said, each crafting material would cost in the thousands just for one. Though I suppose if you had enough gold...could be a workaround.
I have around 47 million Softcore gold right now. Honestly, if I was short a few materials to craft this or that piece...I might just drop a bit of coin to do this.
Nothing stops you from doing that. There are no white items at vendors though, and rares are way too expensive, but people wait for a 5k gold blue item, buy hundreds of them and salvage them for the materials (Arcane Dust is often the bottle neck).
For crafting you need Death's Breath though - i.e., the level 70 Demonic Essence equivalent, and lots of material from either white items (which aren't sold by vendors) or legendaries.

This.
They might be able to get a slight uppper hand on crafting with salvaging blues, but that's about it. You still need to farm for white items to salvage, farm for deaths breath, farm for rare items to salvage, and if you're making a legendary it seems you'll also need the corresponding legendary drop to make it (at least the high end ones), such as griswold's scribblings, ect. So I don't think it'l be that big of a deal at all.
Nah, I didn't think it'd be a gamebreaker at all, that's why I said that in my initial post. Not even complaining that people with billions of gold could necessarily abuse it either. I mean, they could dump millions into buying blues and yellows from vendors, and still not even max out an entire 1000 material stack worth.
Ha, and yeah, Maka, certainly not efficient from a gold perspective...time perspective, MAYBE, as there are a lot of rich folks who come from the AH mindset who felt farming for godly gear was less efficient than just buying it, and you know, people with tons of money to throw around will often throw it around if it means less effort. Then again, the amount needed to really create a big pile of materials, exactly, would cost a serious ton.
But yeah, Bagstone and Bleu, also good point that I really liked about crafting on the PTR...it takes MORE mats! Even if a person gets blue and yellow mats from buying vendor items, they'd still need Death's Breath, maybe Demonic Essence (so happy I'll have use for those in the expansion), and the ever sought after Common Debris!
I was playing with this one guy on the PTR, he was complaining that Common Debris barely dropped, and that white items were even in short supply. Meanwhile, I salvaged a huge handful and ended up with 50 in the time he took type that, ;-) But yeah, more materials will definitely make this idea far less worth it.
You ruined my day (on top of not being able to play the game due to servers down) I really don't want to pick up white items just to salvage them ! At least, I won't have to pick up blues...
Well, Vulmio, I guess if you feel you're too good to pick up white items, don't pick any up...if you want to craft, though, you're looking at picking up tons of Common Debris...which could be farmed a lot faster if you were picking up whites once in a while, ;-)
I coulda sworn, maybe just at low levels, that vendors occasionally sold white items. Maybe I'm wrong, or I'm thinking of just the current live game.

You need to pick them up regardless, because white items are also the base ingredient for every legendary crafting recipe.

Note that you can salvage and re-craft the legendary item as often as you want, as long as you have the white items corresponding to that slot. White's the limit, not the legendary, at least as of now.
Not really a problem, in my opinion. You'd have to go to the vendor, fill your inventory with items (which doesn't really translate to THAT many mats), go to BS, salvage each one, rinse, repeat.......Doesn't seem very efficient. Not to mention tedious as hell (sorry, tedious as Torment). If anyone wants to do it.....I say have at it.
It is absolutely efficient. I just filled a stack of 800 Arcane Dust with a 4k item. I always picked up everything, but was at 100 blue material and 600 rare material; however, crafting a rare 70 item requires 50/20. Enchanting requires 3/3. It's way more tedious to pick up every single blue and having to salvage after every second bounty.
I mean, they could dump millions into buying blues and yellows from vendors, and still not even max out an entire 1000 material stack worth.
If you're lucky, you can get a blue item for less than 3k gold, which means a stack of Arcane Dust will be less than 3 million gold.. Doing the same for yellows will be more expensive, but still... if you're a billionaire... and there's nothing else than blue material, yellow material, and gold for enforging. That's why some streamers went through 10b gold in no time.
Just thought i'd throw in a pointer on obtaining common debris. Try the Halls of Agony or any other level with alot of Weapon/Armor racks, the racks pretty much always drop a white for me. Halls of Agony has quite a bit of racks so i stacked up a couple hundred pretty quick there.... then I blew them all on crafting recipes that were apparently bugged because they used all my mat'ls but didn't make an item. doh!
Edit: When i say a couple hundred, i mean a couple hundred common debris, you get more than 1 for each item salvaged, not sure what the number was though, maybe 6 per?
I saw a white item at a vendor, in A1. Bought an inventory's worth, but then thought it would be stupid to do it over and over.
Oh, absolutely. I'm feeling really stupid about it. But I picked up every single item since I started playing, salvaged everything, and ended up hitting a bottle neck there. I consider it an inequality by design and hope it'll get fixed upon release...

Yeah, I was saying this on Elendiro's thread, too. I check all sorts of stuff and pick up pretty much everything that drops whenever I can. So yeah, this is definitely something to keep an eye on, if people want to farm up materials for crafting.
Side note...I do LOVE those unique crafting materials some of the unique monsters drop. That one unique snake demon at the far north of the Dahlgur Oasis, Sssthrass...gotta be one of the weakest most pointless uniques I've fought in the game...fought him once on the PTR, and despite having new tricks up his sleeve, he dropped a legendary crafting material! Pretty awesome! More reason to keep track of where the unique bosses are, like Hurax, Ghezrim, Fezuul, and many others.

Anybody have any thoughts? Care at all? :-)
