Looks like a banwave has gone out today… Took them long enough. It makes me worry how long the next one will take when the AH is gone. I see D2 all over again, when it comes to the bots.
Of course it would be nice if Blizzard would (be able to) ban the botters on a more frequent basis. But still, I don't think that bots in D3 are as big of a problem as in D2 because D3 doesn't really have short optimal farming routes, like Pindle etc. were in D3. Sure the bots can make some gold but my understanding is that they are not very good at obtaining items.
Also, I think that the removal of the AH will actually help to lessen the impact of botters on the economy, since it will be more difficult for them (too) to trade away their gold and items. I know some people seem to think that D3 AH users would use third party sites like crazy, even with real money, but in reality I think that those users are going to be very limited in numbers.
The biggest problem in D2 was the duping and luckily that seems to be a thing of the past for D3.
This. There has yet been a successful way to break into the server and change the coding of items, to truly 'dupe'. Sure there's been exploits that resulted in duped items, but nothing that required actual hacking. It seems D3's always online is working =P
Because of the lack of duping, the fact that certain crafting mats are BoA, and the removal of the AH's and the subsequent drop in demand for gold, I think botters will be hurting pretty bad. Throw in some more BoA w/ xmog / reforging / enchanting, plus whatever else turns BoA (maybe loot run dropped items, idk), and I see no reason to even fear botters.

THIS. Many many many people won't use 3rd party trading sites because they never did, don't even know of their existence. Therefore the amount of trading will be reduced by a fair amount, people will start playing the game rather than looking for items from someone else. Decreasing demand = less $$$ for botters.

how did you discover that? is there any official statement?
it is not hard to go to the website where they get the bot and read all the ban post from yesterday
Meh, i'm glad they are still banning cheaters, but i would like Blizzard to be a bit (read: a lot) more active; at the moment, when they ban botters, they already paid for themselves.
I had a friend (not anymore of course) that was botting 24/7 in the "Cave of the Betrayer", he was tele hacking to elite pack to elite pack grabbing rares and gold. As soon as i discovered that, i reported him with the game report system almost daily with no result. After a month i used the web form and in two days he got banned and all his paragon levels and gold backrolled.
He accumulated, from his profile, more than 800m gold; if he sold it, he totally paid for himself without counting any items.
Most of the hardcore cheaters will just laugh at ban waves because they are gaining more income than the box cost...
If "smart drops" do come, it'll change the "farming from these illegal acivities" of the not-so-typical classes as well.
Then those people have to find more ways to "get it done", I can't wait for "smart drops" (if this is what it's meant to be doing *winks* I have all 5 classes minimally geared for a very long time) I'm the kind of person that stray away from one-class, however I am definitely a CM Wizard, with much (90%) well-roundedness.
I just fear with the AH gone blizz will be less active on the security.
What do you mean by security? Securing against dupes and cheats? That crossed my mind as well and is a valid concern. Online, however, it's quite easy to detect dupes because of the unique item IDs (server-side). As long as the online requirement stays, I'm fairly certain there won't be any dupes.
Securing against botters? Don't think so, remember good old D2 when they even banned lots of "false positives" in their HUGE ban waves and banned people in question (and weren't as willing to un-ban afterwards as they are now in D3).
