With the announcement of the AH shutting down, I am sure lots of us are wondering where the economy of the game will end up and most relevant to us, is what we can do to prepare.
My initial thoughts are that gold will obviously become harder to get, as we have to either trade for it, or find it in game. This makes me think 2 things. First, people with gold in the billions, could remain really ritch, but since the only gold sinks (to our knowledge), are Crafting (Gems, Armor, Weapons, and Mystic). and repairs, this could mean that actually having large sums of gold may not be as valuable.
Another thing that may happen is that, following the AH shutdown, gold may be a strong trading source, but then fall off as time goes on.
Regarding gear, I think that even the most perfect gear in the game will lose a lot of value, considering that even the best is only lvl 63 gear. We don't know how high the gear level will be in the expansion, but since the max level in D3 Vanilla is 60 with 63 gear, we could speculate that the gear level could be beyond 70. This means to me that having perfect gear is more relevant to your characters ability to farm at X MP and get better gear when Loot 2.0 and the expansion kicks in.
Anyway theses are just my initial thoughts and reactions. Let us all know what you guys think.
All you need to get an idea of what happens to gold is to look at the D2 economy where gold is useless.
yeah that is my thought as well, however it may be worth thinking about how much gold we have to spend on upgrading gems, crafting high end gear, and who knows how expensive the Mystic could get.
I have a feeling the games economy and trading in general will be near non-existent.
If the loot is anything like the console version which it probably will be without a AH.
Players will simply farm for their own items or farm in a very small group and share.
Stuff like account wealth and item worth wont matter at all.
Gold wont really matter since crafting and any other gold sink will be killed off by low costs.
I've seen it happen in D3 on Console, In Torchlight 2 on PC. I expect D3 on PC to follow suit. The only trading based ARPG left will be PoE and that game is like that because the drops really, really suck and the entire game is a life sink.

That's the thing, all those costs will be lowered BECAUSE we can't just buy mats off the ah. So I'm thinking gold will retain a little value, but it's back to bartering like D2, not 'hold on let me check the AH to see what I want to trade this for'.

Thats actually a good point, for me as a player of the Diablo series, I actually prefer solo play for the most part. It would be nice to think that my own farming will be all I need to make my characters top tier and then maybe some trading for perfect gear towards the end may be nice
I hope gold becomes worthless and trading is practically non-existant. Make legendaries account bound so that when you find one you actually are proud to have it.
I was thinking also that it may be a cool idea to have something like a trade lounge. Maybe a custom town-like level (or just Act 1/5) where players could join (between 8-16), and trade. Personally I always liked in D2 being able to go to trade rooms and do business. OOO maybe that could turn the Act 1 Tavern into a trade room, or make a bigger level
wouldnt like to see same scenario as on console, diablo is also about trading but man to man,if it would be like diablo 2 some in game currency like runes gems gold and trading would be awsome.it would not be fun if u can get all top items in like 6 months, console players are more casual ones so thats why blizz made more drop chance there
it will be back to the "good old" d2 days, with a piss poor easy game that you can beat with the few items you find walking trough it, it will be back to 15 years ago with trade chat spam, forum trading, scamming left and rigth. Currencies will be whatever the players make up, gold will drop but be totally worthless.
I would think gold will be at least a little bit more valueable than D2. In D2 all you had to do with it was repair and gamble (which sucked). At least we have crafting, gem upgrades and upcoming cool mystic things to spend our gold on.

This. Gold will absolutely not be worthless. That, at least, is guaranteed. Will it still be useful for trading? Time will tell.
One thing I'm thinking about doing is equipping all my charcs now. Without the ah it won't be so easy anymore to find what you want and with 'smart loot' the finds will be specific for each charc. It's not that much gear to buy since most of the intel and dex equipment can be shared. I'll leave my barb bare since my crusader will find gear for my barb.
I never really liked trading in D2 so once I get some decent gear I'll be farming away.

Great decision, great.
Pretty much this. Crafting costs are going to get reduced. As for trading, it will be even more vulture-esque. You'd be surprised how bad 95% of people are at correctly valuing gear. Throw in no universal price check and all hell breaks loose. Trading will still be a very big thing for the hardcore players. Especially if pvp is a thing.
Remember the ladder guys, the eco will reset and none will have alot of gold maybe just maybe none ladder will be interesting, els the ppl that are saving a lot of gold will be loled at
Loot 2.0 sounds like gold will still be the currency in my ears, els Gems, tombs, something new maybe. Because you wont be able to trade you gear, Lets say your a DH who want to get better gear, well you have to find another DH or Monk that have some gear they have found that they dont use etc. I cant see how you with loot 2.0 will be able to trade like d2.
Its all very interresting, looking forward too some more info at blizzcon
Sry for my English, aint that good at it.
The people saving gold are idiots. The only thing that will have relative value, from now until RoS, will be gems. I'd say crafting mats too but they could add more and without an upgrade system for crafting mats they become worthless.
Anyway gold can never be useful as a primary currency if there's no AH. People would only want gold for crafting and repairs. Drops will cover repairs so all that is left is crafting. I can tell you that right now the limiting factor in crafting is not going to be gold.
game will have that felling now when u get good item u can enjoy it until u sell it ,ppl will add u offer u ,not like u now u get good item and sell it in 5 hours max to who knows who.just the felling of getting good item is lost now,but after this change it will bring hole new(old d2) dimension :)) gj blizz
They have done the hardest part, removing the AH. Now it's easy to deal with gold : remove it completely (remove also the repair system that is completely pointless, and make the dyes free). Crafting remains exactly the same, without gold costs.
Add a chat system like d2 and let us make games with game names to make trading easier. And let us take a waypoint to any Act in a single game.
I'm actually thankful that the AH is going away. I didn't have time to play the AH to make billions in gold. Did they earn it.. maybe maybe not who's to say. I have only ever gotten about 100mill in gold which i know means jack. to me gold was already worthless. 20 mill to a marque gem damn i know i won't bee seeing one of those any time soon

It will be useful to buy the lowest type of currency, that's about it. As long as trading exists, the currency will be crafting mats and gems.
You'll see a lot more of IK armor with X stats looking for Tals armor with Y stats + Z gem.
