I've seen a unique affix that lets you use all of your followers skills =P
Edit; But when playing console, they upped their dps by a ton. My follower has 14k dps with bad items and no token, and it helps a lot to have them do actual meaningful damage. If anything, a couple cool legendaries that effect them and upped damage makes all the difference in my book.
I actually would prefer if they just removed the followers all together. I've always found it annoying to have them following me where ever I go, plus their quirky catch phrase get annoying to listen too after a while. I could never understand while Blizz thought we need something such as followers in the first place.

well, A; It adds to the story and the fell of the game. B; D2 had mercs and they were a pretty integral part of the late game. C; They are fun to have when solo'ing =) No one says you have to hire them.

Well thats interesting, finally they can do some damage.
@bigheaded you can disable the chat and you can unhiring them if you want. But yeah, they were bad designed IMO.

Diablo is about the eq hunt and followers are a place to put more eq. I think they added a fair amount of flavor to the game AND there are legitimate choices to be made regarding which ones to use (well at least Sorceress v. Rogue)
Playing on PC I abandoned any hope of them doing real DPS a long time ago - by the time you reach inferno they might as well be throwing spitballs - but you can squeeze some extra MF/GF out of them and the sorceress can actually be quite good for crowd control.
I'd hope they'd at least give them a few more skills to choose from and maybe an eq slot or two - can never have enough places to stash interesting eq.
To be fair, if you give your followers as much dmg as you possibly can, they can reach 20-30k dmg (which would be like a 10% increase to your dmg).
The problem then becomes their "effective" DPS. Since they don't have permanently active 200-300% skills, they barely deal that 10-15% increased damage that they were designed to do.
But with the recent changes to multiplayer, I think allowing followers to do slightly more damage is a good change. Maybe not 100%, but definitely up from what they do now.
It would be nice, since now they are a quite dull ad-don in the game.

You know, after all this time, I had no idea. /facepalm
Thanks for the heads up. I'll give it a shot and see if I can enjoy them shadowing me a little more.

You don't have to use them. Completely optional.
