As the estimated release date is unknown, I guess just as everybody else that this patch will be released not too far away from the original expansion, so question is, what will be the point of this patch ?
I mean, you won't seriously farm level 60 gear when expansion will come out a month or two after ?
I don't think that this patch will bring back too many people since the gear you will get in the patch will be useless anyway, considering new level cap in the following expansion.
I'm not sure why are people so excited about it when it won't change anything...
We have no idea of the systems that are planned, all we know is that big changes are going to happen and in a game like Diablo 3 that's naturally going to create excitement. On top of that they've already mentioned how the enchanter will be able to upscale items to level 70 so items that are level 60 will not be "worthless", it's very likely that the gear that's currently considered the best in the game will infact remain that nxt exp. I find it very unlikely there going to be bringing out weapons so OP that they make a mace with chd/soc/+.25aps/top end DPS/str bad in comparison.
To claim there doing it in order to bring back players and advertise there expansion all to get moar money seems a kind of single-minded view. I mean, for this to work surely the patch needs to be GOOD? If it's bad, and people just go back to flipping within 2 days the expansion would in fact lose sales. I agree that they can use this release patch before expansion in order to bring players who wouldn't have bought the expansion otherwise back, but at least if there using that method it shows they have faith that what they have done is enough to bring those people back as if it wasn't then it would end up pushing away more people than it brought in.
To me that means there putting there efforts into making the game enjoyable and then they will use that to get the sales, which is what a games company should do.

I understand your question, and your concern. What's the point of farming to get "better loot", if maybe a month later we get an expansion that makes that same loot obsolete?
Well, you said it yourself. The estimated release date for both Loot 2.0 (and other system changes) and Reaper of Souls is unknown. They could be released, for all we know, 6 months appart from each other. And in those 6 months, those who still wish to play will have a better farming experience.
They could also use this period to "test" their current ideas and make some big changes for when RoS hits. So they have a more "stable" environment that doesn't have to be changed drastically when the expac hits.
I mean, you won't seriously farm level 60 gear when expansion will come out a month or two after ?
I probably would. I still have fum "playing" the game. I understand not a lot of people play like this, but I personally do not "farm" items, I just try to have fun and if something good drops, that's awesome.

Well, it might not be BiS insane material, but if it is better than the current gear, it will definitely give a head start to the people who have them when RoS hits. And people will take any advantage they can have.

It will change a lot of things for many people, that's why they're excited. It's understandable that you aren't, though.
Loot 2.0 isn't about just adding a few new items (well, it kind of is) it's about completely changing the item game, or at least that's the hope. I'll try to address some of these here...
Legendary items are dull -- 2.0 adds hundreds of new affixes that can affect your build. Or are just plain worth having.
We're far too dependent on CC/CD/IAS -- Nothing is known about this much, looking at some items in RoS demo, there could be nerfs to certain stats like CD, which means balancing, which means they're considering this issue carefully.
There are two few legendary items worth using -- Loot 2.0 adds nearly 250 new legendary items, which, if they do their job right, most will be perfectly useable.
Weapon damage is out of control -- Ranges will be tightened so your character's entire effectiveness isn't dependent on your weapon. Closer to D2 where having an Azzurewrath or a Nord's Tenderizer was more about the effects it had, than the damage the weapon did.
Drowning in a sea of crap -- Less drops, but more powerful drops. Of course this won't fix 99% of items becoming useless, but at least you'll never again have to go through the soul crushing task of IDing 50 200 DPS weapons. I honestly think it'll feel better to look at a weapon and say, "Oh it's 30 DPS too low" than to look at a weapon and think, "Holy crap, I wouldn't even use that in Nightmare!" This change is more of a sanity preserver.
I think the biggest change will be making more legendary items viable, mostly through affixes I think. It's going to be weird though, because weapons are all going to have to be more or less equal in power, with their unique affix making the difference, or perhaps having more EHP vs. more DPS. I don't know how they'll handle that one.
Whew. So yeah, it's a lot, and people are excited because it will go a long way to making this game more enjoyable to play. (Why do I always feel I have to amend a statement like that with some cynicism to save myself from the title of fanboy.) Okay, it definitely/probably/maybe/will not likely fix a lot of itemization issues.
And most people are perfectly fine regrinding loot, myself included. Half the fun of these games is finding great loot. If they release loot 2.0 and then RoS 4 months later, I'd still gladly play those 4 months non-stop.
This thread is under the assumption that we are buying the expansion in the first place.
If anything the patch would allow unconvinced / on the fence buyers of the xpac to try out some of the major changes to the game without buying anything... terrible indeed.

Indeed. Loot 2.0 might be Good Guy Blizzard delivery (finally) a truly worthy iteration of D3 at no further cost to the consumer, or it might be Cunning Bastard Blizzard luring people back to D3 and refreshing their addiction before dangling D3X in front of them... but the fact is that certain other major publishers would have just shipped 2.0 as part of the xpack and told us to put up or shut up.
Loot 2.0 is a major game patch built from customer feedback and Blizzard's own vision that'll take ages to deliver and comes for free... so basically, it's what Blizzard does.

I can list many things that went wrong with D3 and how we got screwed from point A to point B; however were stuck with the current situation. If you don't want buy the xpac but feel Loot 2.0 has fixed enough to buy the game then all the power to you. Who cares if it's some "clever" ploy to get you to invest in the evil corporation of Blizzard. If you like what you see and are willing to put money on it then why complain?
Basically I see two sides of this xpac "debate". You are very upset with the series and are jaded to the point you refuse to invest anything more into Blizzard, or your upset with the series but are happy they are at least improving the game and recognize the potential is there and will move on.
EDIT: I misread your quote and basically wrote a bunch of crap for nothing

anything to change the current itemization = a good move. regardless of whether you bother to get the xpack or not. if you're concerned on whether or not your time will be wasted for an unknown amount of time, then just don't play the game at all? as far as i'm concerned, my characters will never be as strong as they can be, and that's the whole point of diablo, to ever improve. if your time is that precious to you, then just don't play, maybe find a new hobby. i'm only defending Blizzard, because for the most part they've been listening to the community, and have been doing a decent job in trying to salvage that which is the freshly polished turd of D3 from release. i admit i was less than thrilled about D3 upon release, and yes, paragon levels are cool, and the ubers took time to conquer, but now we're at the point where we need something new. EVERYONE who plays this game sees an issue with how the drops are. they're addressing that, along with giving us more end game content. why is that a bad thing?
In WoW, Blizzard always makes changes to base mechanics just prior to releasing new content. My guess is that they do this primarily so they can find all the bugs and glaring balance issues in the new base mechanics before the new content comes out.
