I was thinking about how SC2 has a robust set of community generated content/maps and even WoW has a large number of player created mods (some of which influenced quality of life changes to the inherent game).
Without seeming snide or nit-picky I wonder why a game that could greatly benefit from mods (like diversity of content and extending longevity like Synergies in Torchlight 2) would they choose to create such a sterile, enclosed environment for D3? I know they want to sell expansions... but eventually they plan to end dev time to this game.
I'm not a modder, so it;s just a question derived from curiosity.
Besides, keep in mind that it's not a question of "franchise" but a question of "game genre". For an RTS game like WC3 or SC2, every new "game" is just a new "map". No one can do any damage by releasing "bad/gamebreaking" stuff.
In WoW, the only thing you can mod is the interface. And the reason why they don't allow anything besides the interface in WoW and why they said "no mod support for D3" is that community argument Melt mentioned. Also, there is no reset button or "new game" like in an RTS.

Not arguing your point, however I can definitely see the pros to Diablo 3 being modable. I honestly think this game would be better if it was being run by the playerbase. Granted, the splitting of the playerbase wouldn't be a good thing.. but neither is 80% of the playerbase quitting because they're very disappointed with the dev team, and lack of continuous content and patches to make the game better.

Mods, I'm fine with keeping them out. I'd like everyone to be on the same page, as Melt eluded to.
If you look deeper, you see that Blizz is trying to fashion the way forward using lots of player input.
Monster Power, Paragon Levels and Monster Density are all huge improvements we've seen that were spawned within the player base.
There's no mods here, but plenty of player-design.

I wholeheartedly disagree. D3 is actually not a bad game at all, it just failed to meet the extremely sky-high expectations that everyone has in Blizzard games. Imagine the same game that is D3 as of now but created by some little kids... do you really think people would rant about the game as much as they do right now?

So, action RPG's don't usually have mods? I think all other ARPG's on the market beg to differ.
Where did I say that ARPGs don't have mods? Please read my statement again, the part after what you highlighted. Sure, many ARPGs allowed modding, but that didn't help at all - just look at TL2. For an RTS game, this is different.
Also, when we talk about "franchise" people might put WoW and WC3 in one basket, which obviously doesn't make much sense within the scope of this thread.

Thoughts?
I think it was done to control the game and players. They wanted less duping and more real money profit.
Personally, D3 could use mod support. The game devs are horrible and barely do anything but talk while ignoring important easy features.
Some very good points and I actually agree that keeping everyone on the same page is actually a pretty good reason to not have them. I enjoy the modding in TL2, but I also only do single player and I know how fragmented multiplayer is now because of the mods.
That being said, the game will need something to keep it going for years. I'm guess expansion content will def help a lot, along with design tweaks that encourage longevity.
Good discussion Gotta have something to talk about until we get new info
The reasons I play D3 are not the same reason I used to play D2.
people still play d2 till this day. no one should. they should be all on d3.
If D3 was bigger and better then D2 then that would have happened. But, some people are just faithful like that. Just like the L4D series, some people just prefer the original. D2 still sets the bar as the best ARPG ever made, that's something that D3 will probably never achieve.
with time we get wiser? with time technology grows? why would anyone be stuck in the past?
this game is still changeable and thats what it needs. honestly on a scale of 1-10 what do you think about my idea of the endless dungeon? i know i didnt create the idea of the endless dungeon but i do believe i came up with alot of good ideas for it and made some good key points... i also want to ask you do you believe that 100.9% of the community would only do the endless dungeons? because i strongly believe that.
like i said new legs and incoming nerfs isnt the answer we already been down that route....
blizzard needs to listen to the good ideas and not the stupidity.
well no nerfs are confirmed but with incoming Over Powered legendaries and itemization there will be too much face rolling and the game is just going to be a steam roll. wont you expect there to be nerfs?

But this the crowd D3 is catering to now. They only care about face roll efficiency and the path of least resistance. At one point they where the minority who made the most noise. After a year, they are the majority who makes the most noise.
This is why blizzard has no clue what they are doing.
ya i know all about the face roll that d3 has become... its way too easy... i have a 2.4m-3.1m tdps budget ww barb that runs mp 7 with no life steal only rend + rune blood lust and i dont even have 500 AR and not even 40k hp. the only thing i die to is reflects some time so i just kite them when i need to. games peanuts now.
2.4m standard, 2.7m vs elites/demons, and 3.1m vs elite demons aka bosses
all i do is pick up legendaries.
i want to go back to the days when i had 15k dps and i was soloing the real ghom or diablo :/
they really need to listen to the stuff that makes sense, learn from their mistakes, and make the game fun. we all know greed had its hand in play... but if they would have did it the right way it wouldnt have ended up like it is now... just logged in 10 people in general chat. gg blizz
simple solution for the pay to win and casual gamer = mp 0

Its hard for them to listen to people who make sense if they don't understand what made D2 great in the long run. Which is why D3 is as it is.
D3 was lead by casual game devs and still is. They obviously played D2 causally which is exactly what this game was turned into.. They removed all the thing they felt hindered or complicated their short D2 experience which is what we got. The game devs also spent a lot of time playing WoW because you can clearly see the WoW influence in D3. They also noticed that a lot of stupid people spent money on items in D2 and turned that into D3s main focus in the RMAH.
Simple things like weapon swap where not allowed due to the fact that some people thought they lost their weapons. These are the people in charge now. Sadly.. If the people who actually created Diablo made D3, this game would have been a lot different.
All time and effort seems to have gone into making the RMAH function. Which is what these weekly 3-6 hour server down times are all about. RMAH issues.

all everyone does is complain... no one is brain storming... no one is trying to make a change... what do you think this community deserves?
i think they deserve to keep looking like fools. LETS BE REAL!
im really starting to think that blizz isnt the problem... we are...
..lulz. Its our fault blizzard doesn't know how to handle its games?
Repent for your sins!...
