Socketing was a feature that was in the game very early on, but ultimately it didn't end up enhancing the play experience as we had hoped. Instead it just kind of felt like a chore. It's a really good feeling to see an upgrade drop, equip it, and keep moving on. When adding sockets to items was inserted into that equation, it made it feel mandatory to return to town every time an upgrade dropped to pull the gem from your current item, add a socket to the new one, and carry your gem forward. There's already a little bit of this in Diablo III with gems, but the fact that you can make a choice in most situations on whether or not to use a socketed item makes a big difference. As another consequence, the ability to add sockets made the random rolling of a socket as an item affix feel kind of crappy.
For example, adding a socket to an item as the result of a one-time quest reward feels really awesome, but over time it starts to become more of a burden instead of a benefit. When you have to level a new character through the entire game just so you can socket the new cool weapon you want to use, the shine starts to wear off really fast.
Somepage interviewer: Any ideas for incentivizing people for finding gear that they use themselves?
Wyatt: I can't comment on that, but I will acknowledge some of the suggestions that have been made, which have all been very cool, and talked about and considered. I know that sometimes on the forums we don't respond to every suggestion made, but I wanted to confirm that yes, we've seen them. We've seen people say, "wouldn't it be cool if I could enhance items that I've found myself, to be 25% better?" I saw that one last week. Or people would say, "what if you brought add socket back, and you could only add a socket to something you found yourself?" All sorts of suggestions like that, and they've been tossed around. Like I said, I don't want to comment on anything specific, but it is something that is discussed.
That's about all we've heard from Blizzard. The Somepage interview a month ago might indicate that they change their mind, though I think their initial thoughts on this still hold true. The problem was simply that the socket and 100% gem was too powerful as an affix to skip. Simply nerfing the gem to 50% would've made it an "option" rather than a "necessity". But Blizzard doesn't want to do that (invalidate gear of lots of players). By buffing the ruby as well, they're going the other direction and made sockets even more important in weapons... sadface. We'll see what happens, but you won't hear anything about that before the itemization fix, which is happening somewhere between X-Mas 2013 and expansion.
Their explanation could easily be argued saying that a socketed weapon is a mandatory addition to gear. How viable is any weapon without socket? Almost no weapon equiped by anyone doesn't have a socket. The only reason I keep wearing mine is the top end damage.
Why the emphasis on the socket? It's one (very powerful) affix. Can I please get the black min-max damage affix on all those ilvl63 250 dps, OS, LS, CHD weapons, that I find?
Also LS seems to be considered "more mandatory" by most players. Why no option to add that?
Btw, Vaizard, is it possible that you played an Undead Warrior by that name?

My travels in the digital world are secret thank you hahahah
My WoW name was BlackCompany back in the day.
The emphasis is because the way the gem system is working is that it is a huge boost.
If I plug my character into a DPS calculator and toss a marquise ruby in that and nothing else, I gain 36 thousand dps.
For 1 socket I gain 36000 dps? If I upgrade any other piece of gear that max I can get is maybe 10-12k.
But that is for hundreds of millions of gold I don't have.
Why is it that for a small cost upgrade (socket pending) I could have a 36000 dps upgrade, but for a huge gold mountain never to be obtained, I only get 10-12k (on my most lacking of gear slots)
Eeeeeh... what? You explained it yourself... the same weapon with a socket would be ridiculously expensive. Why are you asking for a socket upgrade for a "small cost" then?
I'm pretty sure the cost of your weapon with a socket plus marquise gem is about the same than upgrading your jewelry/gloves with some more crit hit chance and average damage to have the same 36k damage increase. Don't get fooled by high-end players who see sockets as absolutely mandatory - they also consider trifecta as mandatory and you don't have the either.
Well, I disagree. Actually, I'd like to see the game changed to make sword&board builds more viable. But it's a different topic. Props @OP for sticking to Stormshield.

I think compared to the other changes being considered a tiny little open circle isn't too much to ask for

Of course its not. It should have been a quest reward as in D2. Its not like D3 has any real quest rewards.
Problem is AH players see this as a "most wanted' stat which allows them to flip or sell items for real money. They prefer it as a RNG stat because it feeds their AH machine.
Sure, for those kinds of player they would never, ever want sockets. But for people who actually want to play the game this is a no brainer.
Not only do we want sockets but we want more diverse gems. Wow, 4 gems. Maybe in a few years and some long talks, we will have a blog post about a new gem being added in the future.

I was hoping to see a All Res Gem only for shields, ammies, and rings, would be BOSS

I think socket quest should be added, but there should be a chance the item is destroyed. That way it's a risk and not just something you automatically do.

I'm going to dissagree.
You're telling me that a fair tradeoff would be to risk someone's only weapon and the 1 major piece of equipment which their dps is based off of.
I'll tell you what, you give me the ability to find a weapon like that once a week and I'll agree.

Why would you want a reward that has a chance of destroying something? Why should risk be tied in?
I say the Black Smith in town should be able to socket anything for a price.
Maybe the socket recipe could include a hell fire ring and some other random things.
I say make it a quest reward that will make any item socketed account bound. Simple. You can complete the quest as many times as you want but each item is now yours alone.

God no. Just no.
I know people think item sinks are necessary and that's largely a whole different conversation. But a random chance to destroy a weapon (which could otherwise be a very strong item) just to add a socket to it? No.
I'd really prefer that they de-emphasize the magnitude of the socket on the weapon slot. 100% crit damage is just too much. If they'd reduce that - despite the massive QQ from the same crowd that claimed the IAS nerf would make IAS useless - then they could really work to making a socket a "bonus" and not a "must-have."
Blizzard took a pretty hard line stance on IAS and history has shown they were 100% right on that front. There are other subjects (like weapon sockets) that they really need to take a similar stance on and tell the whiners to STFU. Buffing Rubies was just a stopgap measure, IMO. It doesn't address the core issue, and was really just a quick, dirty, fix that let them focus their time on other things.
I, personally, feel that since "itemization" is such a massive, broad, topic that if they plan on addressing this it will be lumped in with the itemization patch.

Socketing my weapon.
One socket per one handed weapon.
If it doesn't have one, socket makes it BOA.
Done, dust off hands.
Please and thank you Blizzard.
Would really really like to hear progress on this topic

That's just it. Gear customizability and such!
Why do we want more options but limit the potential for something so beautiful!
