I am wondering what people think of the new feature ''Player near you''.
A new section has been added to the friends list called "Players Near You"
Any player who is on your local network will be displayed here (even if they're not currently your friend)
If needed, this feature can be disabled from the Social Options of the Game menu
Of course I will use this tool. I live in Québec city - Canada, which is a french province, but the north america servers, as you know, is mostly english users. So for myself, this will be a good advantage to use this feature, I can write in english to interact with other users, but feels easier to party up and use ventrilo with french people !
I won't use this feature. In online multiplayer games where you play with strangers not friends, I always think of those strangers as a very smart bot. It really creeps me out to play with real strangers that are really human, especially those living nearby.
If I were on a university-type network I sure as hell would use it! Shame I'm not, cause it does kinda seem like a neat feature honestly. Something I'll never use... but still neat.
I don't think it works that way.
Isn't it supposed to be for places that have the same IP like college or internet cafes, and not simply people that live somewhere down your street?
Exactly. This feature only identifies players on the same LAN network as whatever you're using, such as a shared wifi from a cafe, or a college dorm. It won't make your neighbor who's on a different connection show up.

This seems like something that should be disabled by default, imho. Blizzard apparently can't understand (see the Real Name fiasco) that people like anonymity online. I wish they'd err on the side of not giving away your personal info unless you opt in, but they clearly don't get it. Even if 95% of people think it's great, there's always going to be the one that gets stalked, divorced or whatever over it and that's going to make headlines when it happens.

Let the haters hate. I'm right there with you on this one.

This^ , and might I add a LOL to start the day BhahAhAha. A tin foil hat moment for sure
the places that "Players near you" will be most effective is College campus or other large public areas that people may be gaming at like a cyber cafe. Thus, it doesnt have much use for people at home.
Oh alright, well this was way too beautiful then haha. So it is only good for places where you pay to use their computer...
Not just internet cafe's, College and universities too! This way we can play with total strangers that are using the same connection as we are!

Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."
"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"
As for the feature in question: it's nice for LAN parties and internet cafes. I would actually prefer it added to SC2 but hey, maybe D3 is just a start.
Pretty useless for LAN parties if you ask me, just join a game off a friend and bob's your uncle.

It amazes me how people may think this feature invokes some nigh-magical powers that finds other players based on nothing but their actual, physical location. You would think on a forum for computer gamers you can find folks with better undestanding of absolute basics of networking... Alas, not the case.

It's primarily colleges and universities I was thinking of when I made my previous comment. While Blizzard could approximate your physical location via IP geolocation rather than by magic, I think we're all aware that's not what they're doing here. I wouldn't put it past them in another 10 years though based on how they keep pushing the line on this stuff. I might even be interested in the feature in the right game, but it's the automatic opt-in that bothers me.
