I wanted to make a thread speculating what the first expansion for Diablo III will hold. I know there is a few topics floating around about the games future and such but I don't want to focus on that. I want to focus on what totally new features will be added to the game along with upgrades to current ones. There apparently has been a juicy Titan leak, well not too juicy, but the most info that has been gathered to date. This leak also contains confirmation that the first Diablo III expansion will be announced at Blizzcon 2013 in November. Feel free to speculate all you want on the validity of the information provided however it seems pretty logical in our case that a Diablo III expansion will be announced at Blizzcon 2013. The link I am talking about can be found below:
Again I want to keep this discussion focused on Expansion 1. Again, we don't need to address what is wrong with itemization, why we are bored, and that they need to increase monster density. That has already been established. I know the link above is primarily about Titan but that doesn't really affect what features will be in Expansion 1, so let's leave Titan to another thread. On to our main focus:
What features do you think Expansion 1 will have for us? And what do you want to see added? Lore speculation is very welcome too!
I'll start off with my speculations/wishlist:
1 new class. I know many may predict two however according to the leaked Blizzard product slate there are two planned expansions. I know that this is outdated and not 100% confirmed however it has mostly been accurate. I believe the new class will use Strength and be melee (duh).
Expansion of the Paragon system, possibly along with perks
If I'm lucky maybe a mod can sticky this, if everyone is on board with the thread of course and it's in the right place. Hope we get some good discussions going!
I'm thinking that with all the rants and raves over changes in D3 we are going to see something of a nostalgia x-pac. I think the Necro will return, with less focus on poison dmg and more focus on bone dmg. I think more items, including the lower level set items from D2 will make an appearance. I think charms will make a come back as well, but in what shape or form I dunno. Maybe the Talisman.
I also think Ladder will return, it's in high demand.
For new stuff I can def see the Mystic being pushed through and could also see another new class being implemented (although I'd love to see the Amazon return with a focus on spears and javs as opposed to bows). A new act makes sense as well as new random events. I can see Blizz giving players a way to opt out of the AH.
I cannot see a lvl cap being raised as Blizz would need to have new skills and runes for each character and level. I doubt they will ever increase the players per game....at times it is too busy as is.
1 or 2 new acts (at least one will involve searching for the missing angel as well as reintroduction of Deckard Cain...either revived as a human or perhaps an angel? something like that)
at least 1 new class (hoping for melee, strength based necromancer class), maybe a second class
no increased level cap. This would make all current items have no value, unless they actually wanted to reset the economy (which may not be a bad thing if they have some good plans to improve it).
No expansion of group size, I think 4 is right for this game personally.
new variety of gems/items to use in sockets.
Something that serves the same function similar to horadric cube that allows you to spend a resource to reroll an item, to add effects to existing items (maybe +1 modifier per item). For example allow a player to spend a legendary + 25 demonic essence to reroll that legendary....include star emerald to guarantee an agility roll. Or item + star amethyst adds permanent vitality bonus to the item. Modified items become bind to account instantly. New items in the game that are only used in the "cube" to add modifiers to weapons/armor
NECROMANCER!! MUST HAVE! Also hoping for a new act and hopefully a ton of new items and cool stuff!

Mystic - allowing item enhancing/enchanting.
If we are lucky, there would be different types of item enhancing, but since it is blizzard with their newfound "keep it too simply"-mantra, we probably will just see one type.
Itemization changes. New stats. A bunch of changes to existing stats. It should happen long before an expansion, but Blizzard has hinted they dont like changing stuff around "in the middle" of a game cycle (One of the relatively few times where you might actually be able to find a clear WoW influence in D3 :P)
I'd guess one class rather than two.
Instead they will add new skills and passives to existing classes - which to be fair, is likely also a better choice. Refreshing 5 classes are both easier than making 1 new I would assume, and can bring more enjoyment for players too.
Of course they could do both 2 classes and refresh existing ones.. but it is Blizzard we talk about... It would probably delay the expansion for years...
New end-game varity. Blizzard seem to have finally acknowledged that stuff like Endless dungeons are perfect for games like Diablo. Hopefully they will actually implement something like it then. And it does seem reasonably likely to happen.
I'd say the talisman wont come back though. It would be too many character customization options at the same time! Blizzard couldn't possible handle that.
I hate to say it but I think a LOT of what we see in the expansion is going to be based directly on what the itemization changes bring.
Once we see the blog and have a better footing on HOW they're going to "fix" items we will have a much stronger idea of what we can expect in the expansion.
That being said, general things I think we will see:
- Mystic
- 1 or 2 new classes
- Talismans (charms that don't use bag space)
- A more comprehensive and sustainable crafting system
- Gems revamp and expansion
- Act 5
- KILLING ADRIA HOPEFULLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to adress new content only since we all know itemization, etc. will be fixed eventually (before xpack hopefuly)
- Act V; story linked with former Angel of wisdom and/or Adria.
- Mystic artisan; provides enchantments to gear.
- Talisman; simple ui with some slots where we can put the d2 like charms.
- Two new classes; one strength based (paladin or blood knight) and another that benefits from the 3 stats but @ a reduced rate (Druid).
- Endless dungeon or survival mode. (although i hope it's introduced before the xpack, if not, they will come with xpack for sure, same with real pvp modes like capture the flag and stuff like that))
- New gems; minimum 2 new gem types, skulls and sapphires.
- Keep level cap 60 but Paragon can raise up to level 999 although it does not grant stats pass lvl 100 (bragging rights)
- New skills for all classes minimum 2, unlocked through paragon level 15 and 30.
- Improved crafting; option to reroll 1 afix on gear for a semi expensive price, but only once, to reroll again one would have to reset the item to the original stats.
It's all i can think of for now, and tbh if blizz does launch an xpack with those features i'm sold already

Matheal will be the main story line (angel of wisdom), will probably die somehow and deckard cain will appear out of the crytal gate as the next angel of wisdom.
lvl cap will raise I would think to unlock additional skills/passives
PVP will be released - finally
Mystic will return
Will get to see some of the lesser and prime evils again
Random idea I am adding: Endless dungeon combined with a ladder system..you start back at lvl 1 and would level up to 60 +Plvl Infinity. It would be a totally self found system and solo system. would be a side end game for the elite players (not me haha).
I really hope they redo the system, but unlikely. The current system base on weapon DPS sucks. It should be on skill base like D2. Because this is base on DPS, it makes many items and skills less desire. Items should as shield is completely useless, same as 2H. Most skills in this game is useless.

Completely disagree.
No one wants to go back to Diablo 2 where all that mattered in endgame was to maximize "+x to skill levels" on all items. It's nice that a badass weapon makes a difference. To me as a sorcerer in D2 it always felt odd that I can have zero DPS and stats on items, I just put all stats on vit, maxed Warmth and Blizzard, and collected +skill level on all items - and facerolled through content. It never felt right. D3 is headed in a better direction, though not there yet.
- New campaign act(s)
- Level 70 cap
- Two new classes: one Strength based(to balance out itemization), one Intelligence based
- A few new skills per class
- Horde mode
- Enchanter artisan
- New item affixes, and some core stat changes coinciding with the gear "reset" at level 70
We find a way to get into the 'void' (where the souls of everybody - angels and demons and humans - go) to save Leah and maybe Cain (he might want to stay dead). And it's a good excuse to be able to fight all the old bosses like Baal/Meph/Diablo/Andy/Durial.
Will probably follow at least one of the followers story-lines. The mysterious angel that handed the enchantress the scroll (?), going to kingsport for the thieves guild from the scoundrel, or following up on 'the order' that appears to have brainwashed the templar.
There won't be an increase in the level cap, because I highly doubt Blizzard will completely invalidate all of the gear everyone has worked for and all of the legendaries they will have upgraded before the exp launches (hopefully 1.09).
Hopefully two classes. My guess is a druid like class that's both long range caster and melee, and it uses strength. I can also see a 'dark zealot' type class that wears heavy armor, can use a shield, and also has dark magic. Think a necro + pally class.
New types of dropped items; More types of gems, jewels with affixes, charms with the talisman implemented, and runes. I can see them implementing runewords with one of a couple ways; Either the runes and runeword can be traded freely and they are equal to other legendaries, or the runewords are BoA but you can trade runes and they are still equal in power, or both runes and runewords are BoA and they 'can' be BiS.
The enchantress added. Maybe with the ability to change weapon damage types (and make those types actually do different things), the ability to change around runes, maybe add sockets, ect.
An option to create a single game with every act and WP activated and every boss mini boss and event open , the only difference being that the quest line is suspended so you can freely port around.
I would love to see the Necromancer but I think we already have it, the Witch Doctor =/.
Nonsense! They could include him and make him a little different from the Witch Doctor. Have him focus a bit on his bone skills and summons and it could end up being a lot different than the Witch Doctor such as the Druid was able to summon creatures as well but was different from the Necromancer in D2.

What I hope for:
- New acts (hopefully 2 new acts but I'll be happy with one as long as they add more content along with the expansion)
- A new class or two? A lot of people seem to want a Druid/ Necromancer type class. I wouldn't mind seeing another strength class, It's been said before but maybe one with both range and melee capability.
- A let's-test-how-good-you-really-are mode. A survival or horde mode would be great. They could maybe add a ladder exclusively for this too which would be neat. Because then we could have something to strive for, a higher position in the ladder. Although that may take the focus away from the gear hunt in going through the acts, unless they made it so gear wouldn't drop during the survival or endless dungeon mode? but that's silly!
- A gold sink, hopefully not one that's helps those who are mega rich to come out on top of everyone else, I'm looking at you Marquise Gems!
- More legendary loot, especially for the followers. The followers why doesn't anyone think of the followers!

Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."
"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"
Here's some things I'm almost positive we'll see in the expansion:
The Talisman Charm system (!)
The Mystic (!)
At least one new act, if not two
At least one new class, if not two
Other new item/game mechanics of some sort
Return of open act gameplay (?)
A detailed Monster Codex (!)
I would imagine one of the acts to be a jungle area (not the disaster from Diablo II). I would love to see some kind of dark tropical island act. I think that would be pretty awesome. I also feel that the mystic MUST return. She shouldn't have been cut in the first place, a lot of the times when I'm playing I think to myself why they took her out. Same goes with the talisman system. I miss my charms! As others have stated, one of the new classes will probably be strength, since at the moment we only have one class that utilizes strength. I'd love to see the Necromancer or the Sorceress return in some form. I really miss the Frozen Orb skill!
They'll probably add more end game modes, like a map system, horde system, champion/ladder system. I'd love to see a map system where you can add affixes to the map to increase the reward and difficulty (looking at you, PoE).
Hopefully during one of the expansions we get to visit Ureh like they originally planned but removed it

I think they could add a tree. I think if they remove skill bonuses from items and incorporate then into trees along with other things such as things like (reduce arcane damage taken by 5%) something could work. However that's not a skill tree, it's just a talent tree like WoW's. Which wouldn't surprise me.
If I had to guess I'd say we can expect a lot of the features that were in the game either in the Alpha or Beta and were removed before release.
-Act 5 .... possible location of Ureh, there is a jungle outside of it and a lot of the modeling work was done plus it's in a cinematic
-The Mystic Artisan to either enchant items or modify stats
-Scrolls of Companions aka pets
-Talisman with Charms
-Additional Gem Types aka skulls and saphires
-Paragon Improvements and more "debth", maybe tie in some passives to paragon levels, maybe an increase in the paragon level cap
-Nephalem Cube and the associated Nephalem Cave in Act 1
-Cauldron of Jordan, possibly with other elixir types
-Followers gaining a 3rd skill row
Now outside of these features? I expect we could see Runes/Runewards added, 1 or 2 new classes, new item tier of ilvl64, new crafting levels for higher level items, additional random evens in acts 1-4, addition of new zones and dungeons to acts 1-4, a redesign of the battle.net UI similar to what happened with SC2, Guild support, new abilities and passives, etc....
I do believe that they will maintain a level cap of 60 as Blizzard has been saying for a while that they aren't planning on increasing it but they could always change their mind.
