Pretty disappointing, especially after Diablo 2's storyline won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000.
Well but they at least could make Cains death more... effective? Dunno, he seems like one of the most powerful horadrims ever existed. Like survived thru all the shit from D1 to D3. He took meteor hit in his face and was slammed 3 floors down the cathedral, he managed to fight thru everything up AND he was aged like fuck. But then, some butterfly killed him with one pity spell. RLY?
Have you ever been bit by a butterfly? hmmm? I thought not!
On to a more serious not, I agree with Silvach 110%
At first I was so hyped about the game that I overlooked how shitty the story is.
I felt so stupid having to listen to those cutscenes depicting obvious conclusions.
Example: I just killed Ghom: Game cutscene cuts in: "Ghom is dead. The way to Azmodan is clear now". Like WTF? Make the game more linear. You kill Ghom. You kill now Azmodan. You enjoy deep story.
Another thing: Tyrael the mighty archangel who were so few with words in D2 (making him intriguing and powerful) now hops around the map doing 4k damage. They could just let him hold a popsickle..
And Cain's death.. I mean really the whole cutscene disaster.
Someone posted above me a very descriptive reason why.

Writing Credits:
-Transformers (Original series)
-GI Joe (Original series)
-An American Tail: Fievel Goes West
-The Chronicles of Rid@#*%: Escape from Butcher Bay
-Venom (Which is a slasher, not a drama or character study)
How the hell do these writing credits make you qualified to tell a story about heaven and hell? What idiocy! Blizzard has all the money in the world, and they hire someone who writes children's cartoons? Does Chris Metzen view the Diablo series as some sort of Saturday morning cartoon?
Ugh, now I'm just making myself angry.
I agree with the person above. I don't care much about the story and I've never really written off a game for it's story so long as the game play is good, which it is here. And I really didn't care much in D2 either, but this one goes out of it's way to let you know how bad it is.
If I had any real gripe about D3, it has to do with Cain's death. He was THE icon of the series, and he died like a puss to some non-factor fairy pawn. For all the time this game was on the drawing board, it was a little disappointing that no one stepped up and disagreed with the way it was produced and handled.
Cain's Death was a real downer. It would have been much better if he did not survive Meteor. I think it might have been a better death if a disgruntled aged Paladin smited Cain because of all those bad rolls on gear and then it was up to the characters to hunt down this Paladin.
The other thing is Tyreal. I think it was a bad idea to have him being a NPC companion on some missions.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
I try not to think about it too much, the way the story was delivered (and the story itself) could have been a lot better. But the overall idea of the black soul-stone and Diablos rebirth as the prime evil was pretty interesting. Cains death and both Belial and Azmodans story archs were pretty terrible (Terrible liar/tactician).
Ah well, the cut-scenes may be annoying now but they were awesome the first time to watch
As far as Tyrael as a companion goes... well he was really useful in Inferno before the nerfs! I guess even Tyrael feels the wrath of the nerf hammer...

Oh please, explain to me how is that the poor story of Diablo 2 justifies the ridiculous story in Diablo 3.
I always love this kind of fallacy
I doesn't, but it does justify pointing and laughing at people throwing temper tantrums and pretending that D3 has somehow betrayed the Diablo games' rich legacy of quality storytelling by having a lame & cliched story.

It makes me sad when I think of how ham-fisted Diablo 3's story and plot delivery were.
