This is something I've noticed while playing, and am just curious what others think. In D2 I would very often respond to public chat requests for help from lower level characters - killing a boss, powering them through an act, giving them a WP, etc. In D3 I almost never do this, even though I often see requests for help in /trade and /general. Even though I'm generally perfectly willing to help out, I usually have 5 stacks and don't want to leave my game so I ignore the request.
Anybody else notice this happening? I think it's a bit of a shame, because I met a lot of good people through either helping or being helped. People that stayed on my friends list for months of years, in some cases. It seems like this might hurt the overall sense of community a bit.
I'm not really complaining, or suggesting any changes, or anything else. Just rambling about something I've noticed and curious what others think.
That's just the natural extension of the change in culture.
A dozen years ago, Blizzard and her games were still about the joy of gaming and the fellowship that happens there.
Now, they're in the cult of Kotick, and it's all about "I got mine, and if you're too stupid to succeed in the game and too poor to buy decent stuff in the AH, that's your problem."
I think it has nothing to do with the "cult of Kotick"... no clue why you would get that since he had zero control or input on Blizzard games, but no surprise the tinfoil is out and about.
Personally i am not in general chat, but i will randomly pop on my DH with 350%+ MF and start a normal/nightmare/hell game up and open to pub and then just toss out every rare that drops for those that join (or personally trade if there are 3 others)
I think it has more to do with people's personality becoming increasingly greedy due to their convincing themselves that is the only way to play, instead of just realizing that you can have fun in the game without having the best gear, or being the fastest to level 100...
All i know is that if you look at those that have the most fun in D3 it is those that play how they want, not some twisted ideal they made up in their head about how they should play.
So if you feel it would be nice to help out some lowbies then go for it, heck i have got a few legendaries doing it that sold for a few million as well, and the recent Sledge fist i got got me to level a new monk to play around with it at lower levels lol

people never helped me when I was in trouble. I will never ever care about others

It has nothing to do with being Activision greed or something like that. But you do point out a fact, not about Blizzard, but about gamer. Generally as we get older.
Back in the days, we used to play just for the sake of having fun. Even if you had to go through a bunch of hoops, you still played.
Nowadays, gamers in general have evolved, we have hardcore theorycrafting, that sure it existed way back then, but now the internet is much more widespread and its much easier to find that information. So our mind are set to be efficient above all else. Efficiency is King. Most people dont think being inefficient is fun, unlike the Days of Olde.
I've been helping people that ask for it in the general chat, but mostly while I'm leveling alts and don't need to think about nephalem buff stacks. It was never a problem for me to log off and change to my main to spend a minute or two helping someone progress through a tough spot in the game for them. It is a different story though when you include the nephalem valor in the whole thing, at least in my case.
But I guess D3 was not made to be very social in the first place, the chat channels and the auction house are quite basic or impersonal, and are not encouraging much socializing.
