I need help recognizing botters on the AH. Lately I have placing some bids 3 million plus on certain items. As soon as I place the bid the game tells me that my bid was insufficient. When I recheck the bid it has gone up from my bid to the next top bid almost instantly.
My question is, Is this just a case of multiple bids on the same item or is this a tell-tale sign that a bot is running, and immediately upping the bid as soon as you have placed yours?
I am sorry if this is a repeat thread, any help is much appreciated.
The AH system works just like that of Ebay. Let's give an example:
Somebody puts an item on the AH with 25m Gold starting bid and 50m buyout.
Person A sees this item and bids 35m on it.
Person B sees this item and bids 25m on it.
Person B will get the message "Bid is insufficient" and sees that the bid "suddenly" got higher.
What actually happens: Person A who offered 35m, actually "max offered" 35m, meaning: he'll only have to pay 35m if someone else bids 34.99m, if no one else bids, he'll actually only have to pay the 25m, but his bid will automatically outbid anyone that bids below the 35m. I hope this clears it up for you.

The bid was insufficient because someone else had already bid on it and bid higher than you, not because a botter auto rebid on it. What would be the point of creating a bot to bid on auctions when the system already has something in place for that?
Person A bids 500k
Person B bids 100k
Person B gets "insufficient bid thingie"
Person A wins item for 105k after X amount of time, as long as no one else bids higher.
?
Basically, yes. If Person B proceeds to bid 2m, and nobody else bids, person B wins for 525k (or approx).
Cool, thanks for the clarification. I bid multiple times over and over again upping my bid so as you can probably understand continusly getting the out bid warning seemed fishy to me. But I guess not, somehow this systems seems flawed to me.
if auction is closing in a minute you can expect to be outbind in a second so in order to see the real highest bid you have to close AH and reopen it, or you can simply bid a lot more than what it tell you is the highest bid because auction could easily expire while you're refreshing the AH
the whole biding system is not about who is willing to give most money for item but who is gonna place a bid 2seconds before expiration which means you basically need a stopwatch for that last minute >.<
whole system would be a lot better if AH refreshed bids without you having to exit AH and then reopen it
edit: so if i get this right: for an item worth 500k (current bid) i can easily bid 15mil (if i have that much money obviously) and then everyone else wont be able to bid unless the really want to pay 15mil which would be ridiculous and by doing that i basically screwed over everyone else who wanted to bid with me still getting the item for its actual worth?
this seems very broken to me
Sure, but if you bid 15m for something, be prepared to actually pay that as other buyers will still be bidding, and each time someone bids and it is rejected, your cost goes up.

Yes....I've been ninja'd several times by sneaky friggin ninjas. My bid is the winning bid for hours and hours, no other bids. Than 2 min left the bid goes up and it won't let me place mine....giving an error message. Thanks for the explanation, I was just refreshing the page not closing it out and reopening.
