Dude relax. By the way. They were making diablo 3 an action rpg still playing like a hack n slash but with mmo features. i'm quite sure it wouldn't be anything like WoW. More Diablo 2 LoD with more players. Actually sounds pretty darn awesome to me.
Umm, no. This is from a recent interview:
"You know, when I was working at Blizzard a million years ago we were working on Diablo 3 and it was an MMO. We were going to do the Diablo version of World of Warcraft. Blizzard obviously changed that pretty quickly, so we left to start Flagship Studios and we brought in a lot of the guys, so they rebooted with their own team."
Let me rephrase the critical part "We were going to do the Diablo version of World of Warcraft." Blizzard North was effectively turning Diablo into World of Diablo, they were making it an MMO. I always laugh when people start praising the North team as this infallible pillar of gaming excellence. In effect, they were destroying Diablo behind the scenes, and most people didn't even know about it. The D3 we have today is far closer to the Diablo franchise than the World of Diablo they were making, and Shaefer even applauded the current effort Blizzard has put into the game. I think that says a lot.
ouch....that's a bit I have never heard before.
Maybe it's best things went the way they did, aye?
Given time, I have very high hopes for D3. It needs some polish but I can see the extreme potential. Personally, I'm having a frickin blast.
you won't be missed, Blizzard doesn't care about you if you are not an active spender on the RMAH
I am actually on the same boat, who refuse to spend a dime on RMAH and stop playing the game entirely as they make the drop rates so bad to force you to use RMAH
Yes, we are being FORCED to use the RMAH, having bad loot has nothing to do with luck in this game. Lets just put aside the fact that blizzard have stated on many occasions that the auction house has nothing to do with the drop rates. But you know what? who cares, I don't believe them! even though they made the game!
If you're getting shit drops you don't have to go to the AH or even the RMAH, keep running it again!

Balance patches don't turn me away from a game. I'm not good enough to ever notice those things in general. Haha.
The gameplay in D3 is totally awesome, imo.
What killed it for me was the story, handling of it and the characters. It's what has caused Diablo to die for me as being my number 1 game world/lore/series. It just felt kitschy to me. I also wished to have had the town part of Caldeum be gigantic and fun to explore. Everything felt narrow in D3, even the open areas felt like a small fraction of a potentially huge world. Shame
This patch was a drop in the bucket compared to that.
But then again I don't think Blizzard knows what it wants from its games anymore aside from the obvious of outselling past titles.
Yes, we've heard it a million trillion times. They ruined WoW, they ruined this, they ruined that.
I love this. They are mad at WoW because they took a hard game and made it easier. They are mad at D3 because they took an easy game and made it harder.

Funny how blizzard north was making D3 into WoW, when Shaefer and company left before WoW was even released. NT though. Blizzard north lost its soul on June 30th, 2003. Then it lost its heart, its brains, and its balls as more core d1/d2 team left for other studios.
aaaaaand SCHOOLED.

The quote only implies that it would be "like WoW"...not that they were going to copy WoW's design. Like if a guy in 1825 tied two boards to his arms and jumped off a cliff it would be "like" an airplane........
I am no longer a fan of Blizzard, since patch 1.0.3 and the rampant mistakes the patch has, over and above the "bugged" equipment stats (yeah as if that wasn't done to sway AH prices), instead of dealing with poorly timed animations causing rubberband death, laggy servers and super crappy loot drops the development team is busy banning people from the forums that disagree with the brown-nosers who are DIRECTLY insulting those of us that are frustrated. Maybe Blizzard needs a third party to come in and FIX their game for them, it's become obvious all they are concerned with is whether or not the RMAH makes $. The real reason die hard diablo fans didn't get a real diablo 3 is simple, the team that actually put it together and made it great all left when a French company took it over and changed the corporate agenda, to pure profit, no fun for you, we decide whats fun, aren't you thankful?
Wanna know whats REALLY FUNNY?
The OG Diablo team you are holding up on a pedastal?
Yeah, they were making Diablo 3 into an MMO like WoW.
Do you feel like a moron yet? Because you should.

They were making it into a ''WoW'' Diablo or ''World of Diablo''. That said fuck the old team i like this style better the old great click to move and that overpowered feeling you get when slaughtering tons of demons.
Please whoever cries on D3, just leave no one needs to hear your rantings because most of the times its not constructive more like rage/QQ threads (aka this one).
If you really are a diablo fan, you wouldnt even be here crying, youd be in-game trying to kick some asses in inferno. The game isnt broken or ''too hard'' you gotta leanr to play your char and learn how to gear it.

And what's wrong with the gold AH? It's generally got better items on it, and you don't have to spend any cash.
You tinfoil hat people always make me giggle, by the way.
I am no longer a fan of Blizzard, <stopped caring about the rest of your BS>
Congratufuckinlations! You jumped on the band wagon of the haters and crybaby little bitches. Good for you.

@moderation: Sorry, but I am seriously tired of bullshit posts like this. I realize you will probably infract me, but before you do, you should have locked and deleted this obviously trollbait thread as well as permabanning the hater. Just my 2 cents.
I dont understand why people say that a game is good because lots of players are playing it. If dumbing down a game to attract a broader audience is good game design then sure, i agree with you. That's just not the way i see it.
Wtf ? crowded games = good? who said this? (even tho good games attracts large crowds ).
I dont like diablo 3 because it ''has a lot of players'', i dont know why its even an argument lol, i like it because its fun and challenging. Think w/e you want on the game, this game is a better version of D2. Also, this is a grinding game, has been since D1 and will always be a grinding game, if you dont like grinding, why did you buy D3 in the first place.

World of Warcraft was announced in 2001, but development already started in 1999.
Diablo 3 began development in 2001, shortly after LoD was released. In 2003 North disbanded, a year before WoW was released.
I think you need some schooling yourself...
Since all of this happened within the same company, don't you think they can be privy to the developments going on elsewhere in the company? After what Shaefer said, how can you doubt his words since he was designing the old D3 ... I can bet you the North team was working in relation to the WoW team's progress to bring out a Diablofied version of what WoW was going to be. So its funny how people think that Diablo lost its soul when North left ... the truth is far from it.
This poster has exercised his right to turn up the music.

So if we look at it, do you think that if they did go ahead with the Diablo MMO idea, do you think they'd still make WoW? It'd be interesting if the warcraft franchise and the diablo franchise switched places, Diablo being the huge MMO and Warcraft being continued on the rts genre and all.

Back then the MMO genre was still in its infancy. Blizzard couldn't have imagined that WoW would grow into the powerhouse we know today, how could they? They are developing Titan and they've said in interviews that they think they two can coexist. Just as Starcraft still kept going strong after Warcraft 3 was released. Different strokes for different folks.
They did scrap North's work, however, and opted to revise D3 into an entirely different take. So, who knows, maybe Blizzard wasn't happy with what North was doing after all.

You're not allowed to suggest that Blizzard North was anything short of infalliable. They were the gods of everything. Nothing they ever did could have ever been wrong. You're also not allowed to suggest that Activision-Blizzard could have possibly done something better than Blizzard North. It's a federal offense and the lynch mob will be lighting their torches and coming for your head along with Jay Wilson's head.
There is no place on these forums for being reasonable and calm.

You know what's even funnier? Those of us who actually kept track of the game critics and community feedback back then know how much Diablo 2 got heavily criticized for "abandoning it's rogue roots", for "being in development for 3 years and having crappy 2D graphics/textures" and for how the "itemization game was lacking and everything was bread and butter".
I think I still have gaming magazines with all that negative criticism and feedback in my personal archives (I keep them all :P). I did expect the gaming community to have grown slightly more mature though.

I remember all of that. When you mention it now to people praise D2 as this faultless pillar of gaming magnificence. Back in the day, D2 was good, it just wasn't great, yet. It needed LoD to reach its true potential. The thing is people back then were just as unimpressed with D2 as people are with D3 now. Just find it very funny.
Good news is, the D3 expansion is still coming up, and I feel there's a lot riding on that. The foundation was laid in D3, and the expansion will need to build on that and make it something exceptional.
