I think it's a problem if it is impossible for the ranged classes to not get one-shot in inferno. So far, that seems to be the case. Even Athene, who had limitless resources for buying gear, got one shotted in inferno, so that convinced me.
Having said that, though, ranged classes are the primary reason why the AH is saturated with A3/4 inferno items, and why A1/2 prices have plummeted.
Yeah, it seems to be futile for ranged classes to pursue survivability via mitigation but, on the other hand, ranged classes are able to more cheaply equip themselves for farming a3/4.
Yeah, barbarians can survive via mitigation....but it costs a lot more gold to equip themselves for farming a3/4.
Well, if ranged players stopped thinking that 20k hp is OK for inferno because you have 45k dps, maybe they wouldn't get 1 shotted?
I'm playing WD and I must say that a lot of people ask me why do I have 47k hp and 500 all resists? Well, I may only have 35k dps, but I don't get 1shot by act3 spearthrowers, and I'm able to progress without requiring the perfect "no-mobs-hit-me" run to be able to finish a quest.
People who can only see part of the story. I think you sir, is the reason that we have crappy barbs and monks in inferno, no offense.
You missing the concept:
For melee to deal damage, they have to get hit.
There must be somebody who thinks like you in Blizzard design team, I can't think of any other reason why would they put melee in this crappy situation.
Example:
My barb has 51000HP, 10300 armor with enchantress buff and 2 passive skills, over 900 all resist with a 4700 block shield with 17% block 16% dodge.
Guess how many hits my barb can tank in Act 3 from the fat white elite mob?
TWO.
Guess how many "suicide bombs" in Act 2 I can take?
TWO.
Barb/Monk pay heaps of money for their gear to lower their DPS, only to discover they are screwed. There are only two options for them
High DPS = low defense = 2 shots in ACT 3.
High defense = low DPS = getting crowded and shot to death by range in ACT 3.
Further more, you need to understand the 30% is not that big:
When a mob hit my barb for 100,000 damage for example
Now without the 30% built in reduction without counting dodge / block my barb get hit for
100,000 x (1-0.77)x(1-0.75) = 5750 damage
With the 30% reduction
100,000 x (1-0.77)x(1-0.75)x(1-0.3) = 4025 damage
Another example, a barb with 40000HP, 6000 armor with 500 all resist (you might consider geared?) Getting hit by 4x mobs dealing 100,000 each. (Remember in the actual game, you get hit by a LOT more mobs and a LOT harder in Act 3)
Now without the 30% built in reduction without counting dodge / block my barb get hit for
400,000 x (1-0.67)x(1-0.62) = 50160 damage
One shot.
With the 30% reduction
400,000 x (1-0.67)x(1-0.62)x(1-0.3) = 35112 damage
Yea great, nice try, still die in 1 sec. Using the pathetic 12000HP potion = nothing.
Basically in order the 30% reduction to work out, I had to spend LOADs of money for gear FIRST. Else a barb just get to live for 1 second anyway regardless of the 30% reduction in Act 2 inferno.
Man this thread is funny. i love when people who play the most OP class complain about the weakest class being stronger then theirs.
and jailer? please if that's the least of your worries then i'll trade with you any day. I'll spam smoke screen a few times if that's the worst thing you have to deal with.
Ranged are at an extreme disadvantage in Inferno mode...
I think exactly the opposite. As melee (barbarian) in a team of 4 people, being me the only melee, the monsters will hit me 4 times harder, and ranged people just do damage at a half of screen distance.

I focused on damage on my barb. I ran into a wall A3 hell, and had to re-gear/re-gem.
It's all about how you gear yourself.
EDIT: Find a fire chain / desecrator / plagued / jailer combo, then tell me how easy barbs have it.
This.
Try not getting hit with Tongue lashers with fast, extra health, jailer, invulnerable minions
No glitches, exploits, or being way overgeared and one shotting it.

right because skill gets you out of jailer teleport mobs one shotting you
