I'm just gauging how many people have lost interest in playing Diablo 3 due to lack in gear drops.
My Story -
Since the day I started playing my Monk I have not gotten a SINGLE piece of gear that I could/would use. I've been playing with 2 friends, and each item i get has been good for them or just vendor junk. As for the gear I have on now, every single item is from the AH. Now that wouldn't be such an issue had the prices on good gear suddenly skyrocketed to the 8 digit numbers an higher.
So now I'm stuck farming, I do the Treasure Goblin in Act 1 inferno, and 90% of my kills I get 2 blues an a Tome of Secrets.
So I've basically given up on my 60 Monk, in turn I am playing very little, and when i do play I jump from alt to alt.
And it was done the same way in diablo2 . Grind for the gear, find stuff you can't use. Sell it and buy items you can use. Must be so annoying for you
That's not how I played D2, I actually got set items and uniques, and it was awesome. They weren't all good, not good for my character, but it was cool. Now I do a lot of act one warden/butcher inferno runs and every once and a while get a useful rare. So I can see the op's point, (my view point is probably different though seeing as I exclusively played single player). But alas, I am going to play some more, probably do some more runs right now, I just wish I was throne a bone that wasn't so old and boring looking more often.

Unique (legendary) items did have a higher drop rate in Diablo 2 though.Even with 0% MF I found them lots of times.
I've found 1 crappy one in normal and have 73.5k kills and 4.2k elite kills. The drops rates of "fun" items are too low I'd say. I like using legendaries and uniques more than lame blues and yellows that happen to be better. Oh well, it's the imposter of the Diablo franchise, so I have to deal with it.
The game only came out though. I am sure later on it will become more like Diablo 2.

I've gotten plenty of items, at just about a similiar rate to D2. The difference is, at any given point, I could have bought better items on the AH. In theory, I could have traded for better geawr in D2, except it was the barter system, so it was harder to get good gear, because you couldn't save up a bunch of crappy items for one good one.
That said, if you're not interested in the grind, you're not interested in the grind. Maybe try leveling alts? Or try Hardcore, that's always a fun challenge. What gets me is so many people seem to pretend D2 wasn't about an item grind where you could do Baal runs for 2-3 hours, and unless you had awesome MF gear already, you wouldn't get much.
This game would be 10000% better if they eliminated the possibility to generate useless stats on items. An item should not have two primary damage dealing stas (int+dex). Barbarian-only belts should not have intelligence. Enchantress relics should not have strength. Monk spirit stones should not have intelligence on them. The list goes on for DAYS. On the topic of class specific gear - why do these even exist when they don't have different limitations than any other piece of gear? Just to make sure that an item is 100% useless for 4/5 classes, I guess.
If they added simple limitations like this, 99% of the crap you pick up wouldn't be completely useless. I'm okay with the idea that you have to trade to get the best gear. I'm not okay with being forced to trade and play the auction house game to get ANY gear, because there are so many item attribute possibilities that you could very easily never see something even questionably worth equipping. It's the stupidest kind of grind they could come up with, and the fact that they've tricked so many people into defending it makes my head hurt.
Imo drop progression is bad more then anything else. Especially for melee who can't stack mainstat/as/crit and hope to get by on that. As a monk i need vit/armor/arcane res (my one of choice)/all res/dex for armor slots, AS/Live/hit/Dex weapons/jewelery. Atm i'm comfortably doing warden/butcher run with 160 MF and i barely find anything for sale, and even then this items are worth 100-150K at most. That's a non-factor sum when all upgrades for me are starting from 1mil and decent once comes to 5-30mil sums.
Ofc i decided that Butcher/Warden are bads and nothing to see there, switched to act 2 Kull/Belial runs (ofc with 5xNV) and... 1 usefull drop in about 10 runs (yet again close to nothing for sale).
After getting upset by Kulls/Belials loots i decided to do it hard way and start act 3 elites farming (oh so painfull) and i'm still getting retarded lvl 57 yellow items left and right.
P.S. Same as OP playing Monk, and i use 1 drop (from Inferno Belial), rest is AH stuff. Just think it's rediculous that in 3d act of inferno difficulty mobs drops items for hell difficulty... that's just feels wrong and unrewarding.
Ofc i decided that Butcher/Warden are bads and nothing to see there, switched to act 2 Kull/Belial runs (ofc with 5xNV) and... 1 usefull drop in about 10 runs (yet again close to nothing for sale).
thats actually a pretty good percentage. in d2 you made like 50 runs without finding anything
Well there're 2 things to keep in mind:
1. In D2 upgrades often were [best in slot endgame item], in my case it's just a placeholder that added few dex/vit/resist over what i had. I just wanted to be fair becouse upgrade is upgrade, but if you ask "have your character became more powerfull" - i'll answer "no".
2. In D2 you didn't have to stack 5xNV, clear trash, do "save the citizens" event and face 3 phases boss. You could teleport-spam to boss with sorc, open tp, drill him a new one and collect loot.
P.S. Different games are different. But i'm just saying that items below lvl 60 shouldn't drop past act 1 inferno.
The right way to do it is by skyrocketing your MF and focusing on MFing all day all night. Gear drops when you focus on MFing...
I've runed act 1 with 160 MF (before NV) and act 2 with 120 - yellow loot indeed droped more often from elites, although i ended up teleporting to vendor more often.
Tbh the only really decent thing i found is 520 dps 1H for lvl 49 (-11 lvl requirement), my Barb alt enjoying it much lol.
And it was done the same way in diablo2 . Grind for the gear, find stuff you can't use. Sell it and buy items you can use. Must be so annoying for you
NO
in D1 and D2 you get drops where the items are ABOVE your current level not the BS in D3 where the items are always lower than your current level (except when you are starting out and endgame)
that is why farming was fun in D1 and 2, you are not forced to go to the AH to get better equipment, you can always find them and they would be sitting in your inventory/stash/mule waiting for you to get to that level to use them
Ofc i decided that Butcher/Warden are bads and nothing to see there, switched to act 2 Kull/Belial runs (ofc with 5xNV) and... 1 usefull drop in about 10 runs (yet again close to nothing for sale).
thats actually a pretty good percentage. in d2 you made like 50 runs without finding anything
And in D2 50 runs took maybe 2 hours of mephisto/nihlathak/pindleskin/etc.? Each run in this game can take up to 30 mins+ to get the stacks and kill the necessary bosses on inferno.
People keep complaining about drops being way too "random", resulting in hybrid gears that are not optimal and that they can't - or actually don't want to - equip, and I can definitely see what they're talking about. Yes the random drops are very random. Yet, it's interesting to see that these drops they're getting are fitting another friend/class, and that the AH is FULL of cheap, not so hybrid, gears.
So it looks like even though some people are probably getting unlucky, I don't doubt a very few really are, the random system isn't too random for the community to gear up and progress through game content. If I was wrong, you wouldn't get somewhat decent piece of gears for 20k from AH
Last night I ventured into Act 3 Inferno for the first time on my DH.
I went happily about my business knowing that I would never have to deal with them invisible snakes anymore, unless I feel like punishing myself (mmm masochistic pleasure). Anyway, after dying a handful times on the battlements I had 5 stacks of Nephalem valor.
Then came two packs that made life miserable. Pack 1: Fallen Overseer. Affix: Fast, mortar, vortex, molten. Guess I died about 10 times before getting them down. What dropped? A dagger of sorts with 136 dps (Id take an SS, but that got vendored faster than you can say pos).
Second pack:
Those giant bats with their really annoying sound. Invulnerable minions, reflect damage, mortar, fast. I honestly dont know how many times I died, but it felt like 20-30. Loot: Rare bracers: ~20 str, ~30 int, ~70 vit, +19 xp, health globe improvement. Requires level 50.
You can see the mischievous and evil face of the heavily-rigged slot-machine even clearer on Inferno. If I didnt die about a gazillion times to get those terrible bracers I would just shrug and vendor without giving it a single thought. Instead I ask myself if its worth my time and test of patience to play on inferno until they nerf it (oh they so will).
OR you could be thankfull you rolled DH and you're therefore able to get 5 stacks of NV your very first run in inferno act III
Skip to last two paragraphs to bypass Rant. I recommend it and I am the author, thats how stupid it is
Here are some of my largest angst with D3.
Leveling up you find gear LOWER LEVEL THAN YOURSELF. At late 50s thats understandable. Anything before then its uncalled for bullshit.
You cannot teleport through acts with your Valor Buff and mindlessly farm the best people per game. If you start in Act3, 2 and 1 are locked to you until you leave game and start a new one and even if you start in Act1 the NV buff goes away with Act transfer.
Granted there are no "Immune to X" mobs anymore, there might as well be mobs that are "Immune to class X" types due to affixes they are given. Examples - Playing ranged kiter glasscannon getting Fast/Vortex/Reflect/Jailer....Melee getting Vamp/Reflect/Shielding/Fast (it hurts more than you may think) or even the heavy elem-types.
Legendary and Sets being next to useless in most cases (exceptions to the rule are there). It annoys me to no end when I I.D. a legendary and while the cast bar is going my only thoughts are "should I vend it or salvage it?"
Farming in Inferno Act2 Kulle and getting level 50 crap (not 60s with lvl reduction).
I cannot place the bots in chat channels on an ignore list.
Half my character skills are useless, most are locked because im not dropping my NV even if it would be more advisable to use skill B in boss fight than skill A.
The "Secret" level is a pos and serves almost no purpose (when farming to get into inferno with a barb I tried Whimsy and compared to Act3/4 its totally freaking pointless). It is good for leveling companions in...okay thats a lie, hell pony gets them roughly 300-400k xp and just dragging their corpse along an inf butcher run gets them like 1.2mill >_> Why is this here besides the sick enjoyment I get from dismembering unicorns and teddy bears?
Act-2 has a higher density of "GO AWAY YOU ANNOYING SHIT!" mobs than any other act and has one of the hardest end-act bosses. Swap Belial with Azmodan and giggle at how easy it would be to get past Act2 inferno than if say, its the way it is now >_<
Alright, I think im done with my rant. Sorry if you read it all, happy if you didnt, clapping if you agree.
In context to this thread while farming in Act1 with my DH and Barb I found a grand total of 2 upgrades, rest are AH. I found 1 upgrade with my DH in Act2 while progressing. While in Act1/2 Inferno I found a total of 7 Legendaries. 1 sold for 100k, 1 for 50k, rest went to a vendor after failing to sell or got salvaged because I found it a crueler fate for their uselessness. I have also found several recipes (to bad none with more than +4 stats) and 0 set pieces. Honestly might I suggest for other unlucky people...get a gold find set instead and just save yourself the excessive amount of runs for trash drops and gold.
The next several million gold I get is going towards a Gold Find set instead of a MF set. Ya, higher Mf I do get more rares. How many of those are good? beats me, i dont count. More gold find...mmmm if I can double-triple my gold a run I think I might enjoy myself some more just buying inflated prices.
Surreal.. interesting idea with the GF gear. I am leveling DH atm (i have lvl 60 barb hitting Act2 wall) and everybody suggests get a MF gear for DH. With the sheer randomness on items and stats, moar goldz looks like better way to go. 5NV + 150+ GF should give nice amount of gold..
It really does seem like there are too many useless items in D3. You definitely get better items with ~100 MF + NV, but I still think GF is the way to go. You get more useless blues with that much MF too, which just means more trips to town. It's kind of unfortunate though because the endgame turns into a massive gold farm to buy items on the AH as opposed to finding special items a very small % of the time like in D2. It's still fun when you get enough gold to afford the item you want, but not nearly as entertaining as finding special items you can trade/sell or use.
Also, there's the expectation that when you see an item on the ground, 99% of the time it'll be terrible. Then you identify it and you have to examine the stats to know if it's good or not. I think a lot of people preferred D2 where as soon as you saw the unidentified unique on the ground you knew it was probably something good. And named items were obviously better in most circumstances, so you didn't have to examine the stats as much.
