So in Diablo 2, as we all know, the economy was ruined with dupes and hacks. Essentially there was massive inflation and the price of goods went down.
So if Blizz is successful in limiting dupes in D3 coupled with the same intended rarity of D2, how fast do you think people will reasonably be able to acquire gear high enough to be able to conquer inferno.
My thinking is that everyone was overpowered in D2 because everyone had an enigma or a Eth-Botd. If these items are as rare as they were supposed to be, 1/10,000 people would have them.
I expect a few months before any Inferno Legendary is on any AH. Everyone who reaches Inferno in that time will be keeping what ever gear they need to beat the difficulty. I myself will only sell the legendaries that I find if I have no use for them. And that is especially if I don't need legendary mats for crafting.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
I believe D3 is more about skill then which items you have, I do think some items will extremely hard to get, So even if someone ever did manage to dupe, it wouldn't really matter, since items are not what is going to beat Inferno.
Also, Blizzard has ways of tracking which items we get now, so if someone gets like 100 SoJ's (just referencing) They are going to know something is up, they had no way to track this is D2
Without dupes and bots, legendary items will probably stay rare.
But on the other hand I don't think they are necessary for inferno. Gearing up will probably be necessary but I doubt it absolutly requires many legendary. Good blues, with good affixes, a few rares and one or 2 legendary should do the trick imo.
If you want to compare to D2 (softcore), that was the case. You didn't need boted/duped gear to beat hell mode. It surely limited your choices in builds that could beat it but it was really doable. Especially in coop, parties was the best workaround to avoid annoying immunities for example.
Sure twinked characters had an easier time of course.

I respectfully disagree with you belief on items being downplayed. I would argue that they would be even more important since all skills progression is now 100% similar between characters. The only thing that will make a lvl 60 Barb more "powerful" than another lvl 60 Barb will be the items.
I cant remember where I read it but I do remember a Blue Post something to the effect of "you will need to get a decent set of gear before attempting inferno".
Well imo super rare items are supposed to be what they sound - super rare. It's good if they are. It gives players goals. It's not fun if you can buy all the super rare items for a couple of bucks and everyon has items that should be super rare. If blizz succeeds in cutting duping out of the game completely rare stuff (like enigmas in D2) won't be easily achieved - therefore it won't be cheap. So you will have to choose whether you want to try and farm whatever you need yourself (which make take a day or a year - beauty of Diablo) or spend A LOT of your gold or money to buy it.
Inflation is inevitable, it's just a matter of time before everyone run around with awesome gear. Hopefully we will see new, better and more rare items later on. I wouldn't mind runes. :]
True, I guess I just hope that Inferno is viable for a dedicated player. If you think about it in true economic terms, we are all starting an economy. Its like all 1 million of us are teleported to an island without any money or possessions. We will be poor for a while until the fruits of our labor and bartering stabilize the economy.

Just my 2 cents.
Sorry, I may have posted that a little too hasty, yes..Gear will matter to a degree, but it will not be the defining factor in you beating Inferno is what I meant.
Bots will NOT beable to kill anything in inferno and get all the amazing legendarys that come with inferno mode, so I think those are pretty safe.
