Man, some people just hate fun I guess. Does it matter who wins a foot race between you and your friends? Will anyone remember who won a few years from now? You're missing the point entirely imho.
I don't think turning something enjoyable into an endurance contest is fun. It's like having an eating contest for a food you like--too much of something you like will make it something you hate; that's my opinion though.
However, I do question the level of skill involved. Anyone can hit 60, doing it fast is simply a time investment/luck, being good is 5% of the game while losing sleep will make up the other 95%. Again, not my definition of fun--if that's your thing, whatever. Inferno will be the real challenge, and doing that quickly will have a much larger skill component.
Mostly, my post is a PSA: No one will care if you got first/almost first level 60. There are many more meaningful goals to be trying to achieve.
attempting a world first would probably only rewarding/satisfying to the people who actually hit. no one will really care out side of that group.
i think if they had a formal competition, not really a world 1st but a 1st to 60 with every region and with groups of 4 and a actual prize. it could be exciting to watch as we cheer for our players in our region.
Being the absolute first would be worthless without anyway to prove it. However, being one of the first isn't worthless as it gives you a leg up on a bunch of other people. Don't forget that the game economy is a capitalistic in nature. In other words, the more stuff you have the easier it is to get more stuff. By being at the top you get to become the top seller. By getting the newest and best thing first you get to slap an outrageous price on it, and then continue forward doing the same thing.
This is absolutely true for most people. And it's personally why I will be getting to 60 as fast as I can, while still enjoying the game. I would like the be among the first handful of people who get 60 and inferno and all that, simply because I will have an advantage with the economy.
However the people racing to be world first, really don't give a crap about stuff like this. They are doing it for the "fame", and the "fame" alone.
some like to challenge themselves by doing that, some don't. also, keep in mind that they can experience the game in full after they rushed a char to 60..it doesn't ruin the game for them, it's just a personal thing I guess
This is pure speculation on my part, but Blizzard has confirmed there will be "Feats of Strength" in the game (One of the Chosen). Have you considered that there might actually be a feat of strength for first level 60 in your region, or first level 60 <insert class here> in your region?
I wouldn't be surprised if these actually pop up.
Considering that they've explicitly said they're not doing such a thing?

You could make the same argument about the Tour de France in my opinion. They take something fun (riding a bike) and turn it into a grueling endurance contest too. Plenty of people participate and many more enjoy watching though.
I agree that people shouldn't do it with a mind toward becoming a celebrity or making a bunch of money or whatever, but if someone wants to do it for fun, then more power to then. And achieving the world's first level 60 certainly doesn't preclude being the first to beat Inferno either.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
Didn't Blizzard specifically say that they didnt currently have any plans for First Level 60 achievement? Fairly sure I saw that in a blue post not long ago.
They also said at one point that closed beta members wouldn't get any bonuses because they don't do that with their betas...but apparently that isn't true now is it. Besides, WoW does it both for leveling and for raids.
There's been far to many games where I rushed to max level, not even caring about being world first but still rushed, and it ruined the game for me. I remember Guild Wars 1 I rushed to max level and then just stood around in town. I waited for my friends to hit the level cap and by that time I was so bored of the game that I quit.
I'm gonna take my good ol' time with D3. Taking in the story, enjoying the ambushes and events, and really working my characters up to max level and into Inferno.

Beta players didn't get a bonus.
They got a little pretty picture to put on their banner that nobody will look at.
It's not a challenge, It's usually purely luck, along with the use of exploits and a group of 3 people to help ONE person get more xp than anyone else.

No.
You're gonna have to post that about 50 more times before people stop asking the same question over and over again.

Same thing, believe it or not some people are crazy for that kinda thing :\ wanna get 100% of everything in order to satisfy their epeen. I'm slightly guilty of this even xP
Everyone finds their own way of enjoying video games. I intend to take my time going through normal. I want to see, hear, read everything, go everywhere, break every barrell. But that's me. If for someone fun means racing to be one of the first players in the world to hit lv.60 - please, by all means do it. I think more people should understand that not everyone thinks the way they do. Maybe racing to lv.60 is pointless to you but that doesn't mean it's pointless to everyone. Clearly it's not pointless for people that want to do it otherwise they would not be trying to. Let them be, let them have their fun in their own way. It's not an MMO, they are not going to harm your game and your experience with it. Peace. 4 more days:D
First to 60 is neither a challenge nor an accomplishment. Everybody will get there in time, and most of the playerbase within a relatively short time of the first occurance.
The real challenge is going to be first Inferno clear, followed by (and a long, long time from now) first hardcore Inferno clear.
I feel the same as the OP. I'm taking my time through the game, especially on normal, because I want to fully enjoy the process. I see no reason to rush at all, but in all honestly I hardly care what anyone else does in the game. If they really want to rush to 60, let them do it. Doesn't mean a thing to me, they probably missed out on a lot of cool things in the game. Maybe they don't care about the lore and such, that's their choice though. I love exploring everything I can in the game, and since I will be playing solo, no one else is going to take that experience away from me, and for that I am glad. I'm thinking it will take me through the weekend to even get through normal. I won't be playing 24/7 like a lot of people (although I would if I could), and I'll be taking my time to absorb everything.
I think the hardest part of it for me will be avoiding my friends/the internet until I've completed a normal play through, so parts of the game aren't spoiled for me.
As someone else on this forum said, a good meal should be savoured.
I agree with the OP, and to all those who are saying 'what's wrong with rushing through if that's what they wanna do?', there is plenty wrong with it. It is a hollow achievement that is detrimental to their body's health, and after a huge wait for this game you'd think you would want the experience to last a little longer right?
