Its going to depend on your build. 2 handers are for slow but strong attacks. 1 handers are for weaker but more faster attacks. (Like they should be)
Different skills will benefit from different weapons and I dont think everyone will blindly use 2hand weapons.
Actually I think the opposite would be more true because dual wielding generally feels more 'faster' and a lot of people like fast attacks :
You said it yourself; they are not finalized. Based on the information we actually have, D3 wouldn't be a very good game. It's what we don't know that is going to make it great
I know the item database in d3 is not finalize, but base on the stats available, 1 hand weapon is faster and have high damage.
I wouldn't pay attention to the D3 website at all. It doesn't reflect the state of the game as it will be released.
As nAge said, generally 2H weapons have higher damage per hit, but hit slower, whereas 1H weapons hit for less damage but hit faster.
So 2H weapons are great for builds that use BIG nukes that you don't spam really fast, whereas 1H weapons are good for lots of fast hitting abilities.
Who knows, there may be some special exceptions, like maybe a Unique 2H staff that hits fast but for less damage. But that would be an exception to the general rule.
Yea but 2 handers have a better range and using some skills you could technically slash up to 10 enemies where with little hatchets and other kids weapons you are limited to around 3, though obviously smaller weapons are faster, the big guns do more area damage.
I actually think one handers are better due to faster attacks, for most meele classes in this game its all going to be about using your resource generators as fast as possible to fill your resource so you can use the big hitting spenders.
2h are usually better (at least until you start getting much needed affixes on your gear) for classes that can't generate their resources with attacks (wizard, witch doctor) as they just have X number of attacks they can do with their big nukes before they have to wait Y seconds until their resource is filled back up.
Not necessarily. It all depends on the skills you're using. As a Wizard, you would want higher attack speed if you are using spells that channel (as the full damage is applied faster at a constant rate) or abilities that are more effective with lots of spamming. The same applies for a Monk or Barb, if you focus on using 1 BIG nuke, then you're better off with a 2H weapon, because increased attack speed won't benefit that nuke.

That only applies if you're using an area ability like Cleave. Generally your weapons don't increase the range of AoE abilities, which have a fixed range e.g. 12 yards. And it makes 0 difference for single target abilities.

this, beta means nothing! wait for the game to be released

Yea but even in target attacks you have a range of 2 yards as opposed to one for the one handed axe, presuming you can't dual wield 2 handed weapons... with the extra range there's less chance of the demons running too. and unless there is a fury*type skill one handers won't have that speed benefit to chase things.
but yea, damn straight i'm using cleave! swing away jack!
Let's not forget the weapons and armor and on the D3 website are probably out of date by a long shot and they probably won't be completely updated for a few weeks after release.

Channeled abilities do weapon damage over a period of time related to the weapon speed. So it really doesnt matter if you have a fast weapon. With a fast weapon you might do 50dmg over 1.2 seconds while channeling. With a slow two hander you might do 75dmg over 1.5 seconds. So no, you don't always want fast weapons for channeled abilities.

As I said at the top of my post:
"VERY generally speaking:"
The OP is clearly not a theory crafter, I think he just wanted some general tips ^^
Ok, point taken. I would have thought my point was a fairly general tip rather than theorycrafting, though.

They should actually be updated at launch.
I love being corrected on things like this! (not being sarcastic)

it all comes down to what the character screen says about "damage". take whatever gives you a higher number.
the only real difference will be the additional damage e.g. holy or arcane. you then need to divide damage by speed, e.g.:
2-4 extra damage at two 1.6 speed weapons or 7-9 extra damage on a 2.4 speed 2h
that is 2*(3/1.6) or 8/2.4. 3,75 or 3,333. now add this to the numbers you see in the screen, and whatever comes out as the higher damage after that will provide you with a higher damage output.
lotta theory of theories about weapons no one knows about :P. there's so many build/gear possibilities out there that until we get some experiance using all the skills and learning the finer apsects of their stat system that all but the simplest legitamate theory crafting is moot.
i think a lot of these questions of what skill and what type of weapon will be answered by combination of preferance and best weapon available. i also think best dps builds, while great, will lose a lot of their charm come inferno and will be a secondary concern to utility if rumors are to be believed.
Whether a skill has a cooldown or not is another big factor. Resource spenders which are not spammable will also favor the slower harder hitting weapons. Since you can build characters loaded with skills that have cooldowns there will be some interesting discussion on that topic when we actually get our hands on things.
