I was going with the wizard, and I'm sticking with that class. Wizard follows the make up of a truly powerful late game char. Huge DPS potential and a solid MF class like the sorceress in D2. I just wish i could go past lvl13 in the beta.
Still haven't played all classes, but for now, DH drops way below. It seems all interesting abilities are not reachable in beta. The 2 first basic attacks feels extremely meh, and feels very sluggish (although that might be fact I managed to only play with default, then crafted crossbow, both very slow). Bola Shot might change it, but haven't manage to level him up that far. It's just 2 other classes have either better oomph (Splinters on WD, Cleave with Glyph on Barb) with basics, and he don't get good spenders early either (Rapid Fire is so-so, Impale must be most boring skill in game).
Also, as only class in game not being able to use generic weapons, he 'might' have problems getting gear from drops, so I'd rather have some stashed items from other classes luck to feed him.
Barb is just sick, you can feel the power of his punches in everything, although Rage spenders are again pretty meh (there is something wrong when generator does way better at clearing mobs that spender). Jumping in middle of mobs is priceless, Weapon Chain that miss or hit wrong mob not that much. Will have to try Monk today to compare which melee is more interesting.
Wizard atm is somewhere in middle, but he is still low. Magic Missle is so boring, but Shock Pulse replace it rather nicely, with sick damage if you can get all lightnings hit. Can't feel love for Arcane Orb, but Freezing Ray with slow is pretty nice (even if it's reskin of 'so-so Rapid Fire', it just... feel better).
So atm, from WD > DH > Wiz > Barb > Monk, it's WD > Barb > Wiz > DH, with Monk probably coming somewhere near Barb if his melee style got POW to it as well.
There's barb, and then there's the rest. I'll play them all to 60 but Barb will always be my favourite.
Bloody oath to that

Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."
"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"
I studied videos and abilities of all the classes extensively and had a good idea of what I would probably like to play.
My top 2 pre-beta were barb and dh.
And they still are. Barbarian because he just rampages through. The demon hunter because she's swift and deadly with grace.
Finished a SK kill a couple of hours ago with the witch doctor and just didn't care for him that much.
I have a feeling that I'll like both the monk and wizard tomorrow.
What surprised me most is what skills I have ended up like more than other so far vs what I thought I would like from videos. Ancient spear and caltrops being 2 skills I like alot that literally weren't in any of my theoretical builds lol.
The biggest problem for me was no potions for "energy" especially barb and Monk ( I haven't played DH yet)
this are the class that you got to hit monsters to get energy that lets you use awesome skills...
I just want to spam wave on light on my monk but I can't ...I can only cast it twice then I got to use other attacks to get the "energy" .
Nope didn't change my mind much. Monk is still my main, barb is still a bad ass. DH is a little more dull then I hoped for but could see it better at later levels, same thing with the wizard. The WD totally blows to me and that is exactly what I expected.
Pre Beta:
1. Demon hunter
2. Barbarian
3. Wizzard
4. Monk
5. Witch Doctor
Post Beta:
1. Wizzard
2. Barbarian/Witch Doctor
4. Monk
5. Demon Hunter
Vault or not, I didn't find it fun to run away from monsters even at this low level, while my wizzard was so strong, that even in a 3player co-op game I tore through monsters before my melee friends could even lift a finger.
All classes have their own flavor and I know I'm going to play all of them. I just picked Wizard because I loved the Sorceress in D2 and it looks even better in D3.
Everytime I replay characters my opinion on this changes. Right now I'm really feeling the monk but a week ago it was barbarian and then a week before, wizard.
Playstyle is one thing but I can tell you for sure I am changing from female DH/Wiz to Male. Voice acting of the females annoyed me. Also I preferred female Monk to male, even in spite of the awesome beard.
Same here, my friend!
I'm sooo happy that I can choose male version of Wizard, since I don't enjoy playing female versions at all.
Post-beta
1. Witch Doctor
2. Barb
3 (tie, very close to second). Monk & DH
...

...
5. Wizard
I think the thing that shocked me the most when I got into beta awhile ago was how insanely fun the Monk is to play. The gameplay videos (even the new ones with later skills) just look boring for some reason. But, once you start playing the class, it actually feels the most fun to me (very similar to the DH - not my absolute favorite, but it just feels very fun to play). Witch Doctor was always going to be number 1 for me. The Barb moved up on sheer brutality alone - going in, I didn't realize it would feel that powerful. And, then there's the poor Wizard. Maybe word-of-mouth will convince me to level a Wizard alt, but, for now, I hope she has strong arms, because she's going to be holding all my junk.
Beta definitely changed my view. Although i been around for a few patches, each patch slight changed my view as well with skills being moved around and changes with the skills, like a change in dmg%.
Pre-Beta:
1. Wizard by far
2. DH
3. WD
4. Barb
5. Monk
Now:
1. WD by far
2. Monk - Didn't expect his style to be a lot of fun, maybe cause it's somewhat a new style?
3. Wizard - If I didn't play the wiz in prior patches, he would be 5 right now. He just feels under power now in this current patch compare to the other chars, but since I experienced some of his other skills, I'm keeping him close to the top. I'm still debating between and the monk for 2 as it's pretty close.
4. Barb - Really close to Monk and Wiz due to the feel of the his power when you're just clearing through mobs.
5. DH - Not what I expected, but I would still def play him later on.
Pre beta
1. wizard
2. demon hunter
3. barb
4. monk
5. witch doctor
Post beta
1. wizard
2.witch doctor
3. demon hunter
4/5 monk and barb
I didn't enjoy the melee class at all, the barb was stupid easy and the monk was super strong too. I had a terrible time trying to kill the skeleton king on the monk the first time around, it was just a constant run in and hit a few times then gtfo. I found myself using breath of heaven on cd and spirit management was poor. Of course this was at level 8, after a few more levels it was cake. The wizard i thought had awesome damage, awesome CC, and awesome survivability. I went toe to toe with the king at level 8 on my wizard and just popped diamond skin when he ported to me and wave of forced his adds. The witch doctor wrecked the king also, with grasp of the dead and horrify used together his adds never moved from where they spawned and sure as hell didn't threaten me at all.
I was also surprised at how the demon hunter turned out. hungering arrow is awesome, and rapid fire dominates just about anything! I didn't find myself using vault at all but rather just kiting on a path through caltrops. Again, a very very easy king kill at level 8.
I hate to say it but on the barb i actually got bored around level 6 and it was the second character i leveled. Yet over the weekend i logged about 10 hours on the wizard and never got bored once. Different strokes for different folks thats for sure.
DH: Very fun
Monk: Fun
Barb: Fun
WD: Fun
Wiz: Not so fun
I first played through as a Barbarian, and my first impression was that he looked too powerful, with all that fancy stuff happening when you hit a monster, including visual fire damage and the moon physics. It just seemed too much for a level 1 character, and it kinda turned me off. But I kept playing and I guess it grewed on me after a while. I am definately going to play him more.
I didn't however not have this problem with the other characters, maybe because I was now allready used to the style, or simple because they were not buffed in the same fasion as the barbarian. Afterall, he he supposed to be the most badass of them all.
I played the Demon Hunter the last, just managed to kill the Skeleton King 2 minutes before the Open beta servers went down. I must say, I didn't have high hopes for this character at all, beeing a barb and sorc fan in Diablo 2, and never even finished D2 with the amazon or assasin. But wow, it has to be my favorite character in D3! It was so fun to play, an I cannot believe everyone is say that they are dissapointed in the Demon Hunter...
The wizard dissapointed me. Quite boring to play compared to the D2 sorc, and so I didn't even finish the beta with him, but I will of course give him another try alter.
I loved the Monk and the Which Doctor, even though these two were those I beforehand didn't think I would like.
