From my experience in past games, usually ranged characters do better in the first run through the game just because they can kite where as obviously melee can't so basically if you got good skill its best to go range. Do u think this will be the case for diablo 3 in that the first clears of things will all go to the wizard witch doctor and demon hunter because their ranged?
Despite this i do still plan on making a monk first because i really liked the gameplay, but it does worry me that i won't be able to kite because i'm usually the archer in most games.
i am desperate to make a good melee character, my D2 barb & pal were a fail even when i tried to make a shapshifter since my elemental druid was my best character he ended up a big fail too. (copy that to all RPGs i've played) so simply i suck at making melee characters, yet my first run will be a monk <_< i just never learn
edit: though i am sure the demon hunter will be my main (with WD being my alt if the monk ends up a failure)
I have personally ALWAYS liked ranged classes. In all games, I've always preferred speed over power. Like in brawler games, I would always go with the girls. My first toon was the ranger chick from D1, my preferred toon was a electric witch from D2. Why? I have no idea.

"The Unchosen" Pain of Admirance Sigil (For those without -Feat of Strength-):
Melee typically have it rougher while continously fighting new content unless you get lucky and keep finding/making super gear. Keep in mind that melee, or at least the barb, will have more physical mitigation than other classes once we're getting the final tiers of gear especially. It shouldn't take THAT long to level up to 60 and begin attempting inferno and farming hell for random loot. It's the same for arena pvp.
If you are undergeared as a melee, you will always be a primary, and easy target. Why? For the simple fact that you need to be in or near melee range to even hit things/contribute. So since you get hit more often gear that increases your survivability has a massive impact on the game around you. A few pieces of high tier loot and you can easily faceroll what used to be total mayhem, a few pieces of loot and you can live long enough to pick up globes or trigger a life leech skill again or get enough fury for a sweeping attack or stun etc etc.
It really scales, damage is survivability too, for everyone, but armor mitation is especially important for the barb.
With that said, in the BETA barb was the second easiest class for me to play through as(with constantly crafted bsmith gear), the witch doctor being the first and also ridiculously powerful in the beta. Who knows what the game will feel like later on though, the beta is a limited sample of skills/runes, gear and monsters.
The Barb has a (be it less effective than actual ranged classes) way of kiting. Just grab yourself Weapon Throw with enhanced damage or something, and Sprint with Marathon rune.
EDIT: And then I read that you didn't mention Barb at all, but rather Monk. Disregard me.
i dont think that 30% damage reduction is in the game anymore since i dont see it in the character stats anywhere. But even though u can stay out of damage range with range with the barb anyway u just destroy things so fast they dont have a chance to hit u

It's still in the game. They have not removed it in any of the patches that came out after.
I noticed while playing the beta that the barb does have a hard time taking damage up until about lv 5. Then you have gear, skills etc that increase your survivability.
On the other hand, my wizz at first was easier as i was nowhere near the mobs and so i had less chance of getting hit. Got harder as the mobs got tougher as well, but once you hit 13 you are outclassing all the mobs so it doesn't count.
In multiplayer though, (at least in the betain the beta) mobs melt like butter, and yet so many mobs come at my wizard, even though he's in the back, that i still have to keep on my toes. This will probably get trickier as we get further into the game im hoping.
Cant say ranged will be boring, but neither will melee (in fact, all the classes have felt fun to play so far)
I feel the Barbs mitigation and the monks utility have a chance of balancing the scales in any event, the Doc will be my first class (I love him but will not be using pets) but the Monk will be my first HC character (wish me luck!) and I plan to abuse his mobility/utility as best I can.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
I will be doing my first run through with a DH.
Then, after I know most of the knick-knacks
of the game and after I gathered some gear,
I will make a barb.
Despite this i do still plan on making a monk first because i really liked the gameplay, but it does worry me that i won't be able to kite because i'm usually the archer in most games.
Is this sufficient ? Nobody knows.

just sayin

I received TWO beta keys. Eat it and like it.

@Upgradez I could've faceplanted on the keyboard and still killed everything in act 1.

Barb for life.
