I'm super excited for this game and think it will be great, but it'd be even better if after release they could patch in an extra 2 players or so per game to make it 6, I think it would be the perfect number
They've tried every other combination of player capacity you can imagine, and found that with more than 4, the screen becomes too cluttered and unmanageable.
Yeah, 4 feels like a nice sweet spot. Honestly, the 8 player Diablo 2 games were utter madness, and D3 has way more distracting particle effects and such. Also, it's almost impossible to work together with 8 people.
How? if D2 had 8 players I'm sure they could find a way to incorporate 6 in this one, 4 just seems a little underwhelming, and I hope I'm proved wrong come May 15th.
I can attest to why they did this. I played a co-op game and a big mob was near, we all spammed skills and shit got so out of control i had to WALK AWAY FROM THE FIGHT to get a bearing and see my character..... It gets super crazy because of the emphasis on nice colorful skill animations and unless u don't want those.. 4 is enough.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
the fights are gona be epic in single player and 2,3,4 player
4 will will still be epic, more than 4 it would feel to croweded, also the fights would require differnt roles, 4 people can just go nuts on a boss
Truth bombs. Also as you get more players in a game the role of an individual becomes less and less. With 4 player max if one player is gone it is very noticeable. One player gone in a 8 person game just wouldn't even matter.

Without anymore information i would think 6 is as good a number as 4.
However, as stated above, the devs consider that anymore than 4 players would be too cluttered. (and they probably have many other reasons im unaware of).
But as i said 6 is a good number too and i would love to know why you think its better than 4.
Consider that 6 player are smashing all object and mobs around, the physic will use much much more memory even if you have graphic on low.
Also, 6 player would make it easier i think with a boss. If the boss charge one dude (in 4 player) then another and both are near death, you now have only two player that can stand in the boss attacks. If you make it to 6, i think it would be too much easier and ppl could leach easily just by following the 5 others.
I love the 4 player it fits in the screen perfectly for me

Forgot to say that, but looked like it in my post, the game must look sweet and you must be able to see ground / monsters / player details, Having 6 WD with all dogs and summon would fill the screen easy.
Id prefer 5-6 TBH. That way every class can be represented and well people with more then 3 friends can actually play together. Now I have to splinter who I play with because they feel the game gets to chaotic, yet PvP is somehow ok with 6+? Makes little sense, yea it can get chaotic, but it is no way unmanageable.

But the 6+ players in PvP is just 3v3. In PvE we have 4 players verse a horde of mobs, and the mobs have fancy spells that clutter the screen as well.

First, PvP is OK with maximum 4 vs 4 (not 6+ each team) because all you care about is the players, no mobs. You know who you fighting, where they come from, don't have to find them in a bunch of aurora effect. Besides, Number 4 is more of a strategical constraint to encouraging team work.
Second, you seem to assume "no way unmanageable" quite lightly. And you know, ASSume is making an "ASS" out of "u", and an ass out of "me"...
4 is perfect!

Basically Lincoln didn't approve of this 6 player madness

Diablo 1 also only had 4 player spots. Although it was small it worked and it only had 3 classes.
I would of thought a minimum of 5(1 each class) would be the sweet spot for D3.

Peace.
I can't imagine anything more perfect.
(Why are we arguing about what # of people is best?)
It's 4.
