So it seems like inferno is soloable but you need some really good gear to compete in inferno solo, but that begs the question, if you want to item hunt/Magic find in inferno, is a party a must? I cant see how you can have magic find gear and soloing this extreme difficulty. Are we gonna have hunting parties?
Having a group is the way to go. But since you're able to complete inferno solo, I'm sure there's ways to throw in some magic find and still be able to survive.
How can anyone really know the exact answer.
-I doubt blizz will make any content so hard you can't solo
-And if you can't solo inferno with super gear + magic find, why have it in the game? That'd tick off too many people to force public play in order to effectively MF.
-It's reasonable to guess that the more magic find you are wearing the lower your primary stats will be, and thus the longer it will take to kill things. I'm going to guess having magic find will *still* help you find items faster despite this, but maybe not, and if so, how much?
However the benefit of a group is that each monster essentially has a drop for each player. Which means the more people in the game, the more loot to drop. The more loot that drops, the odds of finding the best items increases.
The only downside is the difficulty bump for larger groups.

That's not it exactly: Those players could just as well all be playing solo in their individual games, killing just as many monsters in the same time as in a group... Except that the health of monsters increases only by 75% per player instead of doubling (or something like that if I remember correctly), so having a good group is in fact more efficient than playing alone, but not because "there is more loot". The amount of loot per player remains the same in a group as it is when soloing.
MF is also divided equally among all players in a group, so MF is just as good when soloing as it is when grouping.
One of the things I noticed while playing coop in the beta is that when you have 4 players actively destroying crates and turning bodies, instead of having to throw 2-3 arcane orbs (or any attacks in that matter) to clear a room, you throw only 1, and just pick up loot from 10-15 crates at once (because others were breaking them as well).
To me, that's a huge deal when playing coop. If good items can drop from crates and loose stones, than you probably want to break thousands of those things (so if the chance of something dropping is 0.001% breaking 1k crates increases that to 10% :P), you probably want to do so in the most time efficient manner.
Bigger line of sight in open areas to find those rare/unique monsters is definitely something to consider too. If these monsters always drop something, and you don't want to explore everything, you can just split just enough to increase your line of sight from around 50 yards to nearly 200 yards and "sweep" the map. When someone encounters monsters, just get together, kill them, then proceed to sweeping again.
Another interesting thing, if you're playing in a group of friends, and there's a really good drop that will increase someone's dps by 30% early on (but it's just a magical/rare item) you might as well give the item to your friend, blast through some content (with added power, aka speed) and then he gives it back to you to sell on the auction house. So that's 4x the chance of something good dropping for you (if you're playing in a dedicated group and you can trust them).
Sorry for the wall of text, thought these were important to know
I think his point was more that for each kill there could be four item drops. Player 1 sees item A, player 2 item B, 3 item C and 4 item D. Now, ideally, if you're in a group of friends and player 1's item A is ideally suited to player 3 then they can swap, trade, barter or whatever.
Ofc, there is no need to do this. You don't have to share loot, or even loot link in PuGs BUT if you play with dedicated friends then I'm sure the best thing for the group is to loot share.
There's nothing to stop you from sharing loot with friends even if you all play solo. Anyway, don't get me wrong, I'd stil encourage people to play in groups, for two reasons: It's more efficient, and it's more fun.
It's all about items. Groups by default have an easier time clearing harder content.
if ur referring to a grand generalization of random grouping that will be going on then you are sadly mistaken and not even close.
if ur refrring to playing with your veteran friends who are good then yes.
random groups will always mostly be comprised of newbies and unskilled players. World of warcraft heroics being case in point. id say 80% of the time i que for dungeons over the past 5 years i get shitty DPS or horrible tank/healer and the group as a whole moves slowly. and then 20% of the time i get some uber l33t dps/tank/healer and we move through like butter.
so if YOU yourself are a very experienced player and good at the game you will statistically have a much easier time soloing inferno then with a random group because blizzard has strongly emphasized that if even ONE player in a group isnt carrying their weight the entire group will die.
and then wither you suck or rock being with a veteran group obviously will get you through easier/faster, but veterans by definition are a very small minority

OP asked if you need a group to MF. Answer is no, BUT...
The BEST way to MF would be to find a group of friends and pool the items. Random groups may get you through mobs faster, but no one is likely to share. I think that is still better than soloing because you can get through mobs faster.
Its a toss of the dice whether or not the group MF is better than your personal MF. I would say if you're personal MF is much higher than the groups, it is better to solo.
(Funny, after re-reading my post I substituted another phrase for MF besides magic find. It was much more entertaining.)

Will groups be necessary?
Initially - Most likely
Later on - Most likely not
