My first reaction was surprise by how dated the graphics look when I launched beta for the first time. I instantly hit the ESC key to check my graphics settings (expecting them to be set to the rock-bottom-lowest-possible setting). I've played browser-based games that look better. Certainly not what I was expecting from a company with Blizzards resources, experience, and talent.
In regards to gameplay I was expecting more jumping around, dodging, and that sort of thing. Not sure if what I had in mind would have been better. Just different.
I'm still very excited for the game and playing the beta has made me even more excited. But, the game is pretty far off the mark in some areas from what I was expecting from Blizzard, especially considering how long the game has been in development.
You guys are right. Diablo 3 really IS the next Duke Nukem.
If you believed that, I don't think you'd have over 14 thousand posts.
I do believe this will be the best game ever and here's why: It will have the all the important aspects of the Diablo franchise: awesome random loot, dark atmosphere, randomly laid-out dungeons and hopefully an epic story... All these things are what make Diablo different than all the other games
What was it Bashiok said? Something like, “On a more serious note, I too worry that we won't be able to meet the expectations people have built up for themselves. Part of my job is managing people's expectations, so... eh... stop it. Stop thinking about how awesome this game could be. Just imagine it's a new M. Night Shyamalan movie. Sure Sixth Sense was amazing and Unbreakable had it's moments, but this right here is the sequel to The Village ... or The Happening ... or Signs ... or any of the movies besides the two I first mentioned. So just like, lower those expectations, but still definitely buy the game please, and everything will be just fine. K?”
Well Mr. Bashiok, seems like a Mr. Jay Wilson would disagree with you as he states, "And by the way, we want you to have high expectations for Diablo III and all Blizzard games. That’s what pushes us to try to make the best gaming experiences we possibly can. If Diablo III wasn’t a worthy next installment in the Diablo series, we wouldn’t release it. That’s the way we do it. That’s the way we’ve always done it.
As I’ve said many times in the recent past, we think Diablo III is coming along great and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on it. We’re doing all we can to ensure you have one hell of a time once you step foot in Sanctuary…"
So which is it? Am I entitled to my high expectations? Or should I liken this game to trashy Duke Nukem-like vaporware?

I wouldn't tell you to believe anything. I would tell you to think for yourself and draw conclusions about the game when it's released. It's very hard to tell how fun this game really is without having played the whole thing.

I'm just supposed to think what I want? Then why on one end is Bashiok telling me my expectations are too high and on the other end Jay insists on my high expectations. Why are neither of those guys mostly just letting the game speak for itself? Did you even read those two contradicting quotes I posted? Does none of this make anyone else laugh their asses off at these guys?

Played since 96 as well but considering the change from D1 to D2 I had no idea what to expect from D3.
But what I've seen and experienced myself so far is making me look forward to the release day.
You don't like it? Too bad, each to their own. At least your not bawling that the game should be catered to your own personal tastes.
but not like either of their opinions is word of god
Oh for real? See I thought that's EXACTLY what they were. The word of god. I withdraw my entire argument on this technicality. I mean, should I take you as literally as you're taking me? Or should we not be so literal with one another as to still understand each other's point.
My point, despite how literally I shouldn't take the contradicting stated opinions of both Wilson and Bashiok, is that there definitely is a feeling among the game's defenders that the critics of the game possess expectations that are way too high. But obviously there is a desire within Blizzard to want their fans to expect an amazing game because they are Blizzard and that reputation is important to them.

their fans to expect an amazing game because they are Blizzard and that reputation is important to them.
the critics expectations are ALWAYS too high. always. ever go to fandango.com and read the critic reviews? the many different critics. even on movies that are epic and get 10 "100" reviews and sell the highest in history still have critics rating it a 20/100 nitpicking every tiny little thing because you cannot and will not EVER please everyone. it is literally impossible in anything.
their fans who think about things from all angles and appreciate the soon to be epic trilogy know most of the changes are for the better and despite the haters the game will be triumphant in the end, they also know there will be people who claim to be the most die hard diablo fans and say blizzard has failed, and when blizzard sells 20 million + copies of diablo 3 worldwide those same haters will say "oh well its just a bunch of care bears all the true diablo fans quit" are just raging on deaf ears.
sure blizzard has had PR issues with this game. oh god a multi billion dollar company has employees making mistakes? holy shit obviously this game is fail because the PR division has issues. from what your saying i cant tell if you have beef with the PR department or the changes to the game itself. or both. you just keep spewing random hate over the forums its hard to tell because of your incoherent ramblings.

I still don't see what was wrong with Bashioks post. He was 100% correct. There are people that have impossible expectations of the game, that no matter what the final product is, they will be disappointed. This game isn't going to revolutionize the industry; and there isn't anything wrong with that.
He wasn't speaking to everyone excited for the game, saying to lower their expectations because the game is bad. All he said is, "be realistic in your expectations." "No game can be everything, 'everyone' wants." What's wrong with that?
Then Jay comes out with his marketing garbage. That he felt the need to retract a previous- reasonable statement is beyond me.
I think most people's expectations of this game are more than fair. The minority of people with very high expectations I think are very easy to spot. But people with reasonable expectations often get lumped together with those extremists.
This is still aside from the fact, however, of Blizzard's hubris. I really do think they're starting to feel the setbacks on a lot of promises they failed to deliver (any promise except a release date) and now they're doing all this backtracking and constant revising. I simply think they're becoming inept. Or at least inept on the scale of what they originally set out to do. Perhaps if anyone's expectations were too high it was Blizzard's expectations and now they're backtracking on as much as they can. They're scrapping entire systems just cause even they know they gotta get a game out there and not become vaporware.
They bit off more than they can chew, which is actually admirable. But when they did bite, it was too little too late. And now the things that are in the game seem really underwhelming and lacking in innovation. Now's the whole effort on Blizzard's part as well as the goodwill of their fans just seems sad to me.

Wh...where am I? Are you my son? They say he died in the war. My son, it is you! Gerald, my beautiful son!
I'm sorry your reading comprehension is so lacking to equate EVERYTHING I've said to mere incoherent ramblings. What I think is just as sad are the strange conclusions you reach when you do respond to what I say. You have this amazing gift to infer meanings that aren't there. And you tell me not to take all words literally, but you do so in a way with me that pales in comparison.
I wouldn't tell you to believe anything. I would tell you to think for yourself and draw conclusions about the game when it's released. It's very hard to tell how fun this game really is without having played the whole thing.

If I tell you Modern Warfare is fun and someone else explains why it's not fun, it won't tell you much about how YOU will like the game.
It depends a lot on the person, some people want to be a clone to D2 and their expectation will be disapointed etc.
The thing is before playing your only way is to guess on paper if game looks good or not, we have a lot information for that (not everything obviously). If you say: No way I like that, then don't bother; If it's a maybe, try it and see if you like it as best game ever or not etc...
I mean "best game ever" is a VERY subjective statement anyway.
For myself I played D1, D2 etc whatever, then heard about D3 when it was announced and knowing blizzard ignored it for a few years. When I started picking information in 2010-2011 I was sur this would be a one of the best game ever, now after many removal, some dumb down here and there I'm not so sure. It still looks good but will it impress me ? Maybe. I give Blizzard the chance but I'm not 100% there yet without playing.
Dear OP its quite simple imo: Blizzard makes WOW+no Blizzard North+activision+Lame ass Bnet 2.0 = a disapointing sequel, the game doesnt impress me at all, the tone is bad and dumbed down, the art sucks and I dont like the animations, well you get the picture, I really hope Im wrong and when the game comes out it´ll blow my mind, I wanna like this game so bad, but seeing how greedy the devs are getting in the last years and how bad the products are becoming its just depressing.

Please dont hate me, I´m a diablo 1 and 2 fan.
Maybe it is you coming out of your kid's days and are not as enthusiastic like you were 10 years ago and you play D2 (if you play) only because of good memories but you just don't realize it. It happens you know, to most of us. I'm happy to say it did not happen to me yet.

i disagree. during development and testing you discover stuff that works and stuff that doesnt, so its only naturally you add things and then take them away. the enchanter didnt work out so they scrapped it, no harm there because it was an extra system ripped off from WoW that shouldnt be there in the first place. and runes as items was always a fail idea and theres many threads discussing why. besides that what major things exactly did they scrap? the hall of heroes, PVP, guild support, better chat channels ect wil all be patched in after release i see no big issue with that considering none of those things are "major" systems or that are even required at all for a diablo game.

I play hardcore, I throw a lot of time into games I love. Solo and in a group blah blah blah, much like many of you will.
The original post was not to say there havent been any improvements, I think if I made that point, there would be no follow on posts.
The point is simply to express my feelings of being letdown somewhat with what the product has become.
CERTAINLY this game will still be enjoyable, and CERTAINLY my hopes and expectations were set high.
I posted after finally getting into the beta and playing it through a few times, after watching every video and commentary out there. Im not just commenting out of left field or looking for a response out of the masses.
I simply meant to express my feeling of.. "oh, so this is really what it is.." kind of initial "meh" feeling..
In regards to the "overhype" or whatever you want to call it.. and then the response by Bashiok and others that the consumer should not put too high hopes into the game.. I think this is insane to ask of us after all the money they have put in to just that, hyping this game out of control. I think one problem Blizzard is going to run into here is not with the hardcore gamer or long time fan, I can see them quickly losing the interest of the casual passerby picking up the game. I'll be there grinding it out, I just hope that the end-product is enough to hook in a larger fan base.
You might counter that by saying hooking and keeping a large casual base doesnt effect the hardcore gamer much, but I disagree. ESPECIALLY with the auction house being implemented, I think the bigger the player base, the more intriguing this idea becomes simply in creating a market for those who choose to pour hours into the game to then trade and sell their goods.
A larger base obviously increases Blizzard support as far as patches and what not in the long run as well.
Haha, I get carried away and just ramble on with these posts, idk.

While I do agree there is a certain amount of difference from the design angle when looking from Diablo 1 to Diablo 2 and then comparing that to Diablo 3, I think it's a product of three things.
1.) Blizzard North is gone and their game was going to look totally different, albeit more like an upgraded Diablo 2.
2.) The new team had to redesign from scratch Diablo 3 in a next-gen look way back in 2007/2008 - it's now 2012.
3.) The way Diablo 1/2 looked could not be emulated in a game separated by over 10 years of time, so they designed a new style for the Diablo franchise. Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were released within 4 years of each other.
You can only take the top down angle so far with 2 Dimensions, eventually, things must change or it doesn't look right.
Ultimately, I believe the game itself is much better looking than what we would have had, which is: (respectfully, I do think this looks more like Diablo 2, but not in a good way.)
