This has been bugging the HELL outta me since it was announced/released.
What in bloody tarnations is the point of even having this feature? I mean.. We're all just gonna enable elective mode.. kinda dumb.. Let's restrict what you can do! New feature!..
it's easier to pick skills when you play the game the first time.
I know I think less about what I should put in my slots, even if I still move some skills around.
The feature is intended to guide and ease new players into making their own builds. It's really intended for players who have never played diablo or maybe even the action RPG in general. The elective mode is for us who have been around for awhile and have an idea what we want to do with the classes already.
One reason, as mentioned, is to guide new players.
Another reason is to create more clarity in the skill pool. By having each button correspond to a set of skills with the same role, the interface becomes a lot more user friendly. It makes the skills easier to read.
I have also noticed, at least in the beta, there's not the least need to use elective mode. This will only be for late game or special builds.
I think that's more of a handicap to new players then anything. If I was a new player I would want to experience all things myself and learn along the way, Being restricted only "Dumbs down" the game for new players. If they are given a broader spectrum to choose from with using only the separated skill archetypes "Main Secondary Defensive blah blah" as only a guide, I think it would be much more advantageous. New players aren't going to know how to go to Elective Mode. And if they did, then why even have it?
If anything, Elective Mode should be a "Check, Uncheck" box on the actual skill pane rather then in options.
Yes yes i know this is all still in beta/being worked on/tweaked etc etc...
But without this much needed feedback.. y'know?
------------------
The main reason I ask this is because, I was recently messaged about the contest thing from another member that claimed "X"s build wouldn't work due to the current skill system restricting broad choices. This to me means blizzard is giving the impression to people that skills are going to be "pre-designated" regardless of player choice.
^ The person who PM'd you doesn't know wtf is going on obviously. With Elective Mode, you can put any of the available skills on any of the available hotkey positions through the menu. With it turned off, they limit your choices for each position based on the different type of abilities. Anyone who tells you otherwise is greatly misinformed.
User friendliness is ruining the computer world. It's opening doors for people who should stay out in the cold. Similar to cars with an automatic transmission. If you can't control a vehicle with a manual gearbox how can you be trusted to do anything right?
At any rate, at least they gave us the option right? So I have no issue with it being how it is.

ho... so we get some casual bashing here aswell?...
Well, I don't really mind if it's casual friendly. If they don't want to learn the game, they won't be able to roam in Inferno. That's it.
It won't reduce the fun I have with the game or anything so, why not...
