plain and simple no one should give a fuck what its called, how does the name of something affect your life in such a way you need to vent about it on a thread... rune, runestone, fuckin rune, useless stone, idc as long as it does what its suppose to do, blizzard can come up with whatever name they want THEIR system to be
It seems you guys have misunderstood my point. Tzekelkan made a valuable point that made the title of this thread no longer valuable. I realize now that it's stupid to want to take out the word "rune" now that I know that it refers to an alphabet, not a stone. The title is no longer the argument, or even a suggestion. Please, get over the title and move on to the second, more important topic in this thread.
Let me be more direct with you guys:
Do you feel that using rune stone graphics for the different skills is tacky?
Does it seem odd to you that they are still using rune stone graphics when rune stones are no longer in the game?
Wouldn't it be much better for them to keep the rune letters and get rid of the rune stone graphics?
I feel they should keep the rune letter graphic and get rid of the stone-looking outline. Just keep the letters, tweak them a little to make them more sufficient on their own, and the game will be a hell of a lot less tacky feeling.
The old runes (crimson, obsidian, etc.) were really incredible, and moving from that to these crappy rune stone graphics is very disappointing and ruins the whole idea. The old runes didn't even look like stones, which still makes them perfect for the job (but I would still like to see just the rune letters implemented).
By the way, to all you idiots against people spouting their opinions on matters like this, saying that it would take up more time and postpone release:
If you haven't pre-ordered Diablo III, shut your mouth. I've pre-ordered it, and I want it to be done the best that it can be, without crappy, tacky graphics like the rune stones that are supposed to be symbolic of "rune skills." I paid my money, now I can criticize and suggest as many ideas that I want. I don't believe my real ideas (which it seems some have misunderstood) to be trivial at all.
pfft i hope they keep it cuz the amount of the QQ'ing over runes and it being "taken out of the game" which is malarkey, is at an all time high, i know if they take more out people will be like "ohh wtf blizz you continue to remove core systems of the game!! well there is no uniqueness, only gear and dyes" which is such a drastic and over exaggerated statement.. so no i hope they fix everything everyone complains about ie; chat channels, skill UI(which i can understand), and w.e so it can all be rainbows and ponies and hugs and kisses in this magical world we live in the outcries need to stop

Genius right here. I too really miss the old runes as well and was actually pretty disappointed to see the new rune graphics, also earlier in this thread when people were talking about how to describe a runed skill I think by the time people got into hell (and definitely by inferno) you'd be able to say "poison dart with obsidian rune" and people would more often then not understand what what that implies, and those that didn't could inquire further or look it up. But it would be alot easier to do that with the runes being much more distinctly colored than the bland stone looking runes that are in effect now. Do the current runes even have names?
Additionally, there's not that many skills in the game and each only has 5 variations.... c'mon guys.... I played Diablo 2 for years and I eventually had like every unique's and runeword's effects memorized plus like most of each classes skills and all the runestones, level layouts etc.

I agree; I don't think named runes would be a problem at all. I doubt anyone would type it out, though. It'd end up as "obsid psn dart" or "crim psn dart" since mostly everything was abbreviated or shortened eventually anyways (always has).
Really, it'd be great to shift+click on a spell (like in WoW) to show another person what you're using with ease. I don't usually advocate WoW stuff being implemented, but D3 could really benefit from having some similar things at times, and that is definitely one of them.
I'm a little less worried about that, though.
