The new rune system is inherently tied into skills. Runes are no longer items - you pick your skill, then the accompanying rune. There are now no longer "ranks" of rune. At each level, you'll unlock different runes for different skills. This gives you some excitement now as you level all the way up to 60.
Skills are being divided into further sub-categories (defense, situational, technique, etc.) Initially, skill slots that you unlock are fixed in terms of what 'category' of skill you can put in them; left click will initially only allow your class's spammable offensive ability. Other slots will be locked to the other categories of ability. Eventually you'll be able to choose whatever you want, similar to how the game currently is. Presumably, this is to prevent noobs from making a completely unviable/broken build, but lets you experiment once you're more comfy.
Yes, it's legit. No, I will not tell you where the info came from. No, I do not give a rat's ass if you don't believe me.
I choose to blindly believe you. That would be fun.

This is severely dissapointing. So basically once you reach lvl 60 theres no farming for higher level runes in inferno or at all..

this sounds like a good system and a good change. but i still dont believe you simply because theres no possible way you could know unless you have insider connections which a lot of idiots claim they do and dont. i know you dont care but if this turns out to not be true then i will flame the fuck out of you for being a dipshit in any thread you ever post on. and if they ban me ill come back and make more accounts until your so fed up you quit and never come back to this site....
jk. but the only thing i dont like about this change is you cant experiement with every possible combo when your 30. so if i unlock gargantuan at 19, but cant unlock the obsidian rune effect till 43 or something rediculous thats just stupid.

I don't even have beta access but I was hoping this patch was going to come out today just to read the patch notes and/or Jay's write up. I'm assuming the skill and rune system has seen some huge changes and i'm just dying to know how its going to work. /shrug Guess I'll just have to keep up the routine of occasionally checking back just in case Blizz tells us something.
I hope you´r wrong. I really liked the idea of unnatuned runesystem. :/
lol dude you didnt know? they scrapped that system MONTHS ago.... they announced they scrapped it... sorry to be the bearer of bad news but even if that guy is wrong there for sure isnt going to be the unnatuned system. sorry bro

That is remarkably stupid.
If they follow through with this system then it will remove the entire drop incentive that goes with runes. It will remove an itemization feature in favor of a dull evolution through leveling mechanic and since Diablo is a loot centric game, I find this move very hard to believe. Blizzard also stated that runes have the potential to have extra properties added to them, just to add more value to individual runes and make some more sought after than others. That sounds far more Diablo-esque than what you proposed.
I know you don't give a rats ass, but your proposed system goes entirely against what they planned to achieve with the rune system. Then again, this is Blizzard, and for the love of all that is holy, please don't make runes less attractive Blizzard. The anattuned idea was already nonsensical, don't drive one of the remaining cool systems left in Diablo 3 into the grave.
Same thing was posted on 'some other fansite'. Don't know if its the same poster.
Can't believe Blizzard would be stupid enough to do this though. Seems bad on so many levels.
So much for all the people fawning over all the "customization" the current system would give us, if this ended up as true
And those 'fixed categories'... heh.
I can see the "runes are no longer items" part being true, though I hope it isn't. Having to go out into the game-world and find new skills was always pretty nice.
The previous 3 patches have all been delayed by a minimum of 6 hours, so it is no real surprise that this patch will be delayed as well. It will certainly be a pleasant surprise if it still goes live before the weekend.

@Bashiok Is the new patch still on track for release “Before the Weekend”?
We’re trying… maybe.

Sigh, yesterday it was 'great stuff will be happening before the weekend'. Today it seems 'oops, the great stuff has been delayed till after the weekend. more info coming soon.'
Sigh.

It will remove the drop incentive for runes because... runes are no longer drop. There's nothing to incentivize. Rune as items suffered from multiple issues, not the least of which being player hoarding (becoming an inventory nightmare). With the removal of the mystic, there was no salvaging runes, and no way for them to exit the economy. They'd eventually become worthless and plentiful anyways.
There'll be more rationale in the JW post to follow. But the reality is, this is a Good Thing(tm).
I'm really excited to find out what is in the new patch, if it is the new rune system. I'm sure we're all dying to know what blizzard has planned for it. It will be key to how fun the game is.
If that is how the runes will work, consider me unimpressed. Less drops != good. Why can't runes act like gems but with skills instead of equipment? I don't get it.

only a good thing if you can try all build combinations while leveling up and dont have to wait till max level.

Dafuq? Then what's holding up patch 13? Skill system probably, but that was finished some time ago.
Good change if true, runes as a drop was just clunky. That being said I find charms equally clunky and hope those don't return in an expansion... but they probably will.
