I'm actually torn. BUT, I think I'll end up going male on all my toons (even my other set of 5 classes for HC) just because armor and weapons look better on them imo. I understand it's a design thing, but I just don't feel as badass playing a woman toon with size reduced armor, ya know?
this i dont get seeing as how the difference between male and female chracters of each class are close to nothing at all.
ill be playing (in order of apperance)
Female monk
Male WD
Female DH
Male barb
i hate wizard type chars. but if i eventually try it in D3 i will play male
I'm talking about the size / proportions / style of armor. If I'm playing a barb I want to be head to toe covered in whatever hellish steel they forge in sanctuary. Just like every other game where the female armor covers less / is smaller, I picked male =P Not saying it's a bad design choice, they keep talking about readability so I'm sure Blizzard finds it important that we know we are playing with a female monk instead of guessing. Just my personal preference =D
female Barb named Snusnu That's terribly unoriginal, but I will enjoy sooo much playing her
Haha, I'm naming my female barb Snusnu as well, it's pretty funny. I think Bashiok said somewhere he would name her female barbarian this way as well. BTW how many character slots are there? Because I'd like a male barbarian as well (but also want to have at least 1 of each class at high level)
Yeah, Bashiok's first character was female barb named Snusnu (or at least he said so)
10 character slots for softcore and hardcore characters altogether.
I dont know why people always go back to the "I want to look at a womens body in game rather than a mans" argument. The whole point of an rpg game is in the initialism itself; role-playing game. The whole point is to believe that it is you playing the role of a hero saving the world/doing cool shit; not some arbitrary entity. You are supposed to play as an avatar of yourself, which makes the game much more fun and immersive. This is Diablo 3 bitch, not sandwhich-maker 3
Because that argument is true and rather logical if you are above age of 16 and not some creepy nerd. Not everyone wants to have character that looks bad ass cos it simply doesnt mean anything to me for example, and not everyone wants to live in a fantasy ( role playing ) and rather just play the game. I myself will go with female monk cos male one is disgusting and i dont have the urge to feel bad ass.

Aw, don't be like that. Some people go for the RPG aspect, others don't and that's fine.
I'm a male and my first character/main will be a female wizard.
Neither Diablo nor Diablo 2 were games in which I felt my character was an emotional extension of myself. Postulating that it's an RPG is barely accurate (if at all), and basing an argument on this that you should play a character that is similar to yourself (i.e. male if you're male) is shortsighted. The Diablo franchise is about as far from the literal sense of RPG as you can get and still call it such. There's a significant detachment from a role-playing immersion which I presume is the result of the gameplay perspective. Even my female Blood Elf Paladin in WoW I had some connection to because I was looking over her shoulder, but it wasn't on a personal "this is a reflection of me" level, a closer analogy would be that while playing WoW I was reading a book. After a dozen novels you may get attached to Catti-brie.
The player characters of the Diablo franchise are more like Arnold Schwarzenegger's characters in his action movies. From Conan to True Lies, they are all basically going to do the same thing but just get there different ways. The fun part is more in watching HOW they bring about carnage. I didn't ever identify with my D2 Necromancer, I just loved watching his corpse explosion melt screenfuls of venom lords and doom knights.

Exactly my thoughts. I mentioned my belf toon in the thread earlier and wanted to say that, but for some reason I didn't. When I role-play a character, I start to imagine what would the character do rather then what would I do. And that really feels like reading a book. I like playing RPGs this way much more. Of course the game character can get some of my real character traits, 'cause I'm it's creator, but I won't imagine myself in int's place. But nevertheless I almost never play female characters in games with serious role-play elements. But diablo and WoW? No problem at all.
DH - F (wanted to go M at one point but after seeing him with two xbows spread so wide and sexy (lol) I decided to go F)
WD - M
Barb - definitely M (F is bulky, so thank you but no thank you (and red hair is OK on some, not her))
Wiz - definitely F (M - pussy, F - vicious masochistic hell-babe with a cute voice, buhahaha)
Monk - to be decided (F voice put me off a little, I wouldn't put Russian accent on MONK, she should be a cute Chinese with a strong kick in the groins or at least be slightly less serious or serious with a slight hint of gag)
So mostly females as I like my characters to be sexy so I can stand looking at them for a long time. But barb is awesome as male and ill which doctor is better as a man (from lack of real choice). IMO, WD should be replaced with Necromancer from D2 without changing his abilities, but then he wouldn't be either, would he.
Male because I'm a male. It always creeps me out when a guy plays as a girl character. Makes me think that they're living out some f*cked up fantasy.
This times infinity. Hated it when men in my guild would play female WoW characters...seriously...
you know why? because you know that you saw a female character, assumed it was a girl, and flirted with them..... only to find out it was a guy IRL. now youre starting to question youre sexuality, but you dont want others to know it. So now when you see a male playing a female character, it angers you. so you call it weird. you play it off as if theres something wrong with it and you start accusing THEM of things. no, im joking. but seriously. nothing wrong with a dude playing a female character, or a female playing a male character. its a game and its not like someones cross dressing IRL. its just a game. on topic: im a male, and will play a female demon hunter first. as a side note, i plan to play each class as they were announced: Male barbarian, male with doctor, male monk, female wizard, and female demon hunter
"as a side note, i plan to play each class as they were announced: Male barbarian, male with doctor, male monk, female wizard, and female demon hunter"
This. Also, 10 character slots, 5 character types, 2 genders...adds up to some variety right?
male and female of each class eventually.

I play male characters because I like to feel somewhat immersed and connected to my character. I also like to have my character represent a little bit of myself (even if it only is my gender).
However there's nothing wrong with playing female characters. As mentioned earlier some of the best characters in video game history are female.
Lara Croft, Samus, Sarah Kerrigan, Sniper Wolf, and Meryl (The last two for my MGS bros out there.)
If you chose female because you like the model that is fine (or voice acting). Sometimes I prefer male models, sometimes female.
If you chose female because you want to act like a girl and make people believe you are a girl then you're either a big troll or a weirdo but most of all a deceiver.
That pretty much sums up any debate on this subject for me.
On topic: Male Barb, Male Monk, Female DH/Wiz/WD
I'm male.
Barbarian female needs some love though. Big girls you are beautiful...

EDIT
Did a quick search and it seems the limit is still 10 chars. At least this made me think so:

I'm starting to regret having posted here.

For some reason I've never liked to play as male characters igame, as the female characters often got better looking models. ^^
