As the title says, I am needing some ideas and suggestions.
I am wanting to learn how to play a support build character. I don't know where to start. I've always played what I call a front-line character. Tanky builds (like a Thorns Crusader), damage dealers (like a Trag Pets Necro), etc. I know a large part of this learning will involve having to curb my habitual get-to-the-action mentality because of my history with playing that type of character. I feel it is time I should take a step back, let others be at the fore, and support their efforts, instead of leading the charge.
What class would be the best for me to step into this role with, as a beginner in that regard? I would like something that does have the capacity to defend themselves a bit, at least haha (seen some builds that left me wondering how tf they survived when the manure hits the fan).
What should I keep in mind when being at the rear of the pack?
I don't think there are any "rear of the pack" builds that are in use today. Support characters (zbarb, monk, nec) are literally in the middle of it and geared/skilled to 1) not die, 2) control the crowd, and 3) heal the party/regen resource/buff damage.
I apologise for the lack of clarity. I'm used to the mechanics of other games, where the healer, etc, don't get so close to everything to minimize aggro on them while the tank and the DPS get up close.
To rephrase my question, and hopefully make it more easily understood... I would like to try to do a support role, but don't really know where to start. The rest of what I had said was basically just me being me (over-explaining and over-complicating things). I'm not used to builds or anything where the purpose isn't to either outright kill, or to tank. Pretty much, what I understand to be support builds are the ones that aren't tanks (in the more MMO style definition), aren't the DPS, and are not worried about how much damage they are doing because they are doing what hax0r77 said.
For this build I use 2pc Born, 2pc Captain Crimson, 4pc Pestilence (with RoRG of course).
I'd recommend starting with lower GRs to get your bearings. These builds will get in the middle of the action and try not to die (they're usually the toughest in the group, too). Necro is stronger at crowd control, monk seems a little more durable and provides healing.

Zmonk is my favorite, get in the middle, pull everything in, and heal the group. Less popular these days, but a good one to start with: https://www.diablofans.com/builds/98560-gr100s-zmonk-3s-and-4s
I'm really loving the support Necro too. The build I use is a little different than this one: https://www.diablofans.com/builds/98519-most-efficient-znec-build-for-rats-105-spd

BTW I'll shoot you a PM with a link to my support necro.
Thanks for all the builds. Looking over them all as I type this. Probably going to go with with Monk, because 'new style, new class'. Haha.
