So we're still not 100% on how Diablo 3's chat system works. With Bashiok's latest post, it would appear that the current (and probably final for launch) system for chat is that your chatbox is restricted to your whispers, and any talk/text made in your current game.
I think bashiok has a point about open trade channels being an 'invitation' to spam bots and the like but theres got to be a better solution than having such an isolated social system.
One possible solution lies in yet another system in WoW. its chat system was sepperated in 3 groups.
-general (the only chat you saw was the chat made from people in that zone. so if you went onto say..... Cathedral Gardens, the only chat you would see is that of people who were in the Cathedral Gardens.)
-trade (the chat you saw in this channel, which was the most used, was from people in towns. So you would see people from New Tristram, Caldeum [if thats act 2's town], act 3's town, and act 4's town.)
-local defense (this was the exact same as general chat really, but used for when other faction attacks towns)
If you take the first 2 of those, and maybe switch the 3rd one to something of a 'requesting help' for certain quests channel and incorporate them into Diablo 3, It could work rather well. Add a 4th channel for those not even in a game. There was also the ability to make your own channel where you could tell a group of friends about so you wouldnt have to keep it in whispers. Also noteworthy is that if you didn't want any chat at all, you could leave any or all of the channels. These channels also restricted how fast and often you could post in them. If you typed 2 messages back to back quickly, you wouldn't be able to post again for about 10 seconds.
It might not be perfect, it may need some work. This still leaves the door slightly open for spam bots, but I have faith Blizzard could find a better solution to it than cutting social chat out completely. Even with this suggestion its still pretty isolated. This suggestion also has the downside that it takes away from the action by requiring people to wait in each zone if they wanted to chat.... But thats how Diablo 2's chat channels were as well. It was in-game or out-of-game chat and everyone loves that. What do you guys think? Do you like the WoW chat system, have any modifications?
