Too much loot will only make it tiresome when you have to scan through all that crap.
You must have not liked D2 throne room much then because tons of whites and grays flew every where personally I never minded an over load of items gives you something to do while you are running around
It's the exact same model as D2 and it worked quite well. The new fans to the Diablo franchise just dont know where the game came from and want only super awesome gear. I'm a hoarder and I'll pick up every item that falls till my gold is maxed
Haven't ARPGs always been this way, crap items with a few gems in between? The way I see it, white items aren't really 'trash', they're just the most basic items, while magic is valuable versions thereof, and rares/legendaries are the cream of the crop.
This.
100% agree.
White value items have always been in the diablo franchise. Does anyone remember the secret cow level hell runs for nice imbue items, or the nice 4 socketed items which where perfect for runewords. At some stage one way or another, we all hunted for white items
Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I'll adapt to whatever system they put in place. It's not that hard to scan for blues and only pick those up. The point at which there's a problem is, like in D2, when you couldn't see what all the items on the ground were because it could only display a certain number of the names on the screen at a time.
I picked yes and heres why. With white items being no longer salvageable there is less of an obligation to pick them up. As for white items being basically junk. I think its quite a good move. Good items are only as good as the bad ones. Im sorry to use this example but it works quite well. In WoW : wrath of the lich king blizz was dealing out epic items like penny candy. it devalued the good items. I think seeing some white trash items will help make the magic and rare items feel that bit more like finding a $20 on the ground or finding a gem in a pile of junk.
I explained a little bit about why white are important in my wall of text thread. It's a pretty common thing to have in games like this. Not sure why they would think of re-designing the wheel.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
You're walking down the street, minding your own business, when BAM you see this blonde BOMBSHELL walking towards you, in a scandalous bikini. Your stomach flips, your heart starts going ape shit, Dreamweaver by Gary Wright starts playing in the background. Now, you'll probably just stand there like an idiot because, let's face it, you're reading a fan forum about computer games, but here's the point:
The point is, the hottie is hot because she's unusual and rare. She's unusual and rare because you have to sift through a lot of frumpy, middle-aged, overweight women.
Imagine the alternative. Every woman was at least a 9/10, so you'd never be blown away by contrast, and you'd hardly ever find one. And her fiance would definitely be a quarterback. Or a senior VP of something very important.

People that are arguing D2 whites are the same as D3 whites are making an invalid argument. In D2, white items still had value.
D2 whites could be imbued into quality rares. D2 whites could be socketed to make god-tier runewords. D2 whites (armor especially) could often times be sold for the vendor gold cap sale price, paying for repair bills and gambling. In D3, this won't be the case. Bashiok has already stated that white and grey items are not meant to be picked up and even went as far to say that if players started picking them up, they would be devalued even further to ensure they no longer will. They're just loot confetti to make other items more compelling. This implies we won't be imbueing or socketing them. They won't be a viable source of income for repair bills or crafting. They are trash items with absolutely no value. They are, in every sense of the word, useless.
Of course, that isn't even the discussion of this thread. The value of trash items isn't what's in question. It's whether or not they make the finding of great items even better. To some, they do. To some, they don't. I'm somewhat indifferent on the matter myself.
However, I believe there is more behind this change than Blizzard let on. Though I can't take credit for the theory, the idea that useless white and grey trash items are another layer of protection to combat botting in the game makes the most sense to me. If botter's inventories are filled with garbage, it lessens their impact on the game and it's economy and slows them down enough to be found out and banned. Personally, I honestly believe this to be the reason behind the change, and if it lets players get more enjoyment out of finding those rare items among a sea of trash, bonus!

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.
It's really sad that they removed the mystic. This was one of the most exciting features to me, crafting the exact items you wanted. I presume enchanting white items would have cost less than blues or rares. In that way it would have been a great way to make an item exactly to your liking, since blacksmith craft items mostly according to random properties, the mystic would have allowed you to add properties that you want.
I'm still quite sad that the mystic is gone.

Your post depresses me. Because it's all true. So much wasted potential, I swear to god. lol
Imagine how hillarious if they patched WoW and they suddenly made it so gray and white items in WoW were suddenly not worth money at vendors. Hello? Ridiculous much? Are you even thinking about the economic implications? Or maybe they are and this is just a pathetic fix in response to lazy economy design. "Oh, we're scared of gold inflation and can't design our way around it, Eliminate vendor trash!"

As for all the white items dropping that are now useless, I sincerely hope that they will put in a loot filter similar to Titan Quest. At least then I won't even have to look at those items that are essentially garbage.
Yes. This was one of my favorite features of Titan Quest. I would love to see this in Diablo 3.
