This year I've been suggesting and discussing whether there is room for Runewords in Diablo 3. Some of the conclusions after all the debate:
- Not as rare as in D2 - Shouldn't create powercreep - Should be modernized as a system - Should provide increased build variations
Now I'm definitely done with suggesting. However, here's the final solution I've come up with according to all feedback. Pretty simplified and traditional system compared the more complicated iterations but simplicity is beautiful.
1. About 10 different runes 2. About as rare as Consumables 3. Uses the same sockets as everything else 4. Runewords are formed throughout the gear 5. One rune can form multiple Runewords
Forces player to decide whether to use gems or runes and in some cases, whether even to replace a legendary gem with a rune.
Pretty busy photoshop but you get the idea. Thank you for reading and have a nice gaming with Diablo 3.
I would love something like this. I miss runewords and the extra layer of customization. This approach is nice because it doesnt force you into using runewords instead of sets/uniques.
Would be nice to have crafted gear too, similar to D2. Maybe you could reforge rares in the cube for a guaranteed stat or two based on the gems you use, with the rest being random, like D2 crafted items.
I'm not partial to the rune or runeword examples you've provided, but I think the system makes sense and it would provide diversity. I'd prefer the bonuses to be on the combat side of the spectrum vs. the utility side of the spectrum.
This would be a great addition to D3 as we wait for D4.
The only thing I dislike is them taking the space of regular gem sockets. Instead, I would rather we have a rune pouch which will have three grids. A triple connected row, much like your armor example above, a double connected and one single row (equating to pants and helm), and than a triple non-connected row, which would compromise the jewelry sockets. In all, you can have 9 runewords equipped like above, but it leads me to allow this following addition:
MODIFIED LEGENDARY GEMS USEABLE ON REGULAR GEAR SOCKETS! Simply put, when leveling a gem to level 75, create a cube recipe that costs 300 forgotten souls, 1,000 deaths breaths, and 100 of each bounty mat in order to modify a legendary gem. By modifying the legendary gem, you unlock a level 75 gem bonus related that gems theme, as well as the ability to equip that legendary gem in ANY SOCKET.
Yes, that would be power creep, but honestly, NUMBERS ARE NUMBERS, and this would allow a more in depth optimization, which is truly all I care about in my ARPG's!
*PS Bring back Charms in a similar fashion to my rune pouch idea!!!
Just a random question out of curiosity: why are suggestions posted on this forum? I mean, I get that the diablo community is a lot more active over here than at Blizz forums, but does any of the Blizz people even come here? Is it worthwhile providing feedback or suggestions here that are ultimately intended for developers and not just the playerbase?
There's nothing so badly wrong in D3 that couldn't be fixed. Besides, there's is great chance that D4 is not even as complex as D3. In worst case the Diablo series suffer the fate of Warcraft series where last proper Warcraft is released somewhere in 2003.

It's great that you see the potential behind the controversial (or boring) examples. Agreed that combat side of spectrum makes them more desirable as a system.

Definitely yes! In D2 the crafting was cool. In D3, the crafting is nothing you use after leveling.
The Armor-Gemslots are definitely a something thats a little boring right now.
Agreed. And they are also poorly balanced compared to each other. Weapons also use mainly only emeralds while it would be great to have some other options too.
Some great ideas and I would gladly welcome those as well. Blizzard should see that it is everything that makes loot and builds more exciting that keeps players engaged rather than adding nice but irrelevant additions like set dungeons and challenge rifts.
No just no! Diablo3 is done - it was a test and big FAIL! ALL important devs and most ppl left this ship.
Plz Blizz dont spend more $$$ in this shit game, a lot better investment is D2 remastered with new quests/uniques/rw's/balance!
Forget about this game.
By what regard do you deem it a "big fail"? Is it the fact it's still fairly active 5 years later, the masses of free content updates, the huge financial success or the thousands of hours individuals have put into the game because they enjoy it that much?
If Diablo 3 is a failure in your eyes what on earth is required to be a success, and has any game met your insane standards?
Blizzard is big enough to do D2 remaster, D3 patches and next Diablo game at the same time. Improving D3 doesn't take anything away from other Diablo titles.

How is a 17 year old game a better investment?
Thank you all for feedback! I'll get back to it but this was easy one.
