I don't know anything about programming or making direct mods of games, but I'm wondering if it will be possible or perhaps too difficult to make a conversion mod for Diablo 3.
Do you guys think we will see total or partial conversion mods for Diablo 3 like we saw for Diablo 2 or even Diablo 1? Will Blizzard present restrictions for mod'ers to fully mod D3? Will it be possible to overcome any of those said obstacles or will anyone even bother?
It's my understanding that you will need to play while connected to battle.net, so will that make creating a conversion mod too difficult or even illegal?
I just wanted to hear your thoughts and opinions on the subject. Of course, I for one would like to see people make these kinds of mods and see them be motivated and enabled to accomplish such fan-driven projects.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
Blizzard will not support mods they have said this on numerous occasions, so no we will never see this.
While i'm sure someone could take the game files and mod them without proper support I don't see it ever taking off the ground.
Much like WoW private servers, yes people play them etc but they ever get the popularity of the "authenticate" servers.
We will definitely see mods. Saying the opposite is very ignorant.
And yes, they will be like WoW private servers.
Calling attention to their popularity is a very odd thing to do though. Mods aren't really super popular. I bet you more than two thirds of the people who bought D2 never ran any mods, especially mods that changed the game in a major way such as Median does.
So, in a sense, D2 mods were always like WoW private servers; they never reached the same height of popularity as the original game. And the inevitable mods that will come out for D3 will also cater for the same niche market.
Gaming has changed since then, some. Most games require you to be online to play or you're just so used to the social aspect of games that playing a solo game for too long is ridiculously boring.
It'd be more comparable to wow private servers, but I am thankful Laz kicked enough ass to give us median/xl and kept updating it to make it kinda interesting in the downtime between two epic games. I asked him what he was planning to do once d3 came out a few months back and modders are definitely going to be playing d3 once it comes out for the most part, looking for broken builds and fun things to do just like the rest of us. Obviously a lot of what makes the community behind modding and mapmaking etc special is that they were first and foremost fans of a game, even more than most others (while they may at times be overly negative for having to deal with all the drama from the crybabies benefiting from their efforts for free), or else they wouldn't have made an effort to mod or make maps for that game in the first place.
I don't like people trying to pirate crap from blizzard, they have made at least half of my all time favorite games period. I can not wait for diablo 3, heart of the swarm is going to be freaking sick as well. Yeah I'm into other things but when I think about buying a shooter even if it's selling millions of copies in the first day it's not a must-have like blizzard rts and rpg's are.
Blizzard actually has the best games and the best, most mature in general community, so yes I would expect modded servers to show up fairly quick, but I think for the first 1-3 years of the game they will be a non factor in the community as we will all be breaking our mouses slaying the hordes of evil from the gates of hell on b.net.
Median XL was really only possible because of single player. I believe that the inherent requirement of running a private local server in order to play a total conversion will lessen the number of people willing to partake for Diablo 3. Anything's possible and after 5-6 years after the expansion releases maybe someone will be bored enough to do it.
Modding d3 in that way is no longer possible directly, it would also require server emulation which is not support and "illegal"
I'm really not trying to be a smartass, but when has legality ever stopped the internet from doing anything?
its stopped a great deal of people.
The fact is we will see far less mods, and far less people using these mods, yes people will still make them, people will still use them, but a grand deal less.

My view is that if somebody wants to play a modded version of Diablo 3, they will, regardless of the ToS or the law or server security.
These things do not stop people or the internet.
It will not be as popular as the legit Diablo 3, but it's not intended to be.
it will take a longggg time before someone actually is able to alter the entire game and emulate a server without insane glitches and crap all over the place. possibly years. the game is fine as is it doesnt need radical changes or even any changes IMO. just want it to be released dont want to worry about mods when they wont even be out for years.

"once the pretty hardcore gamers we had testing inferno found it fairly difficult, we then we doubled it" -trolololol jay wilson
Didn't Jay Wilson say that d3 is one of blizzards most mod-able games so far. Then didn't he follow this up by saying its not supported and the online only aspect will greatly hinder it.
Calling attention to their popularity is a very odd thing to do though. Mods aren't really super popular. I bet you more than two thirds of the people who bought D2 never ran any mods, especially mods that changed the game in a major way such as Median does.
Well when I first made this thread yesterday, I basically made the poll with the height of popularity that Median XL reached, in mind. Median is just a mod that most hardcore Diablo fans have heard of. Of course, most casual fans have never touched a mod that alters the core game. I just wanted to see what everybody here thought about the possibility of a mod like or on the same level of Median ever being developed. I wasn't asking if someone would ever come out with the next Counter-Strike or DotA based off of the Diablo 3 client. Haha.
Like I said, I don't know much about mod'ing or programming, but I would imagine the game client will have to at least be cracked to bypass the battle.net integration. Diablo 2 didn't expect you to always be connected. So yes, even though conversion mods were like private-server in their own right, they still only had one obstacle of coding and creating the actual mod. You didn't have to contend with battle.net integration or the entire game being coded to interact with it 24/7.

In the US maybe. Not where I live.
so stealing is legal where you live hm?
@LinkX its still going to stop people that do want to play mods, Downloading and setting up emulated crap scares people. Its not the same as just modifying and downloading some stuff.
As I said, I agree it will still be here for sure, but yes it will stop some for sure that would otherwise want to.
Uh, the definition of stealing is what is completely different from places to places. There are places where laws allow you to download music for free and do not consider it a crime, for example.
I'm sure there will be mods, and I can't wait to play some of them

Never say never, but it does seem unlikely.
A shame too, considering how amazing Median is.
