Oh ill read the whole thing if I havnt.. could miss some good stuff... but in this case I thought I had, at some point =P.
Anyway... yeah I mean this could easily all be unneeded 'fear' of the system, until im playing and see what its like. Heck, this could be one of the systems they are still working on you know? that would be a big part of the game...

true. after the harrassment for release date interview on the front page there obviously still working on stuff but not trying to delay it any further. seeing as they've said "its playable from beginning to end, all classes are done and all skills are done" there must be something were not thinking of they are working on and will be a surprise at release

"once the pretty hardcore gamers we had testing inferno found it fairly difficult, we then we doubled it" -trolololol jay wilson
I will be killing everything so i'm happy either way!
Though if there was only the first 2 options I would choose the rare champions, simply because there are more of them in a single game, so I don't have to constantly make new games to farm a boss.
I really think overall this is a bad move if it stays the way it is.
I am 100% for haven the other things have a good chance to drop items, I LOVVVE the idea of being able to farm the full game to get good loot, instead of just the same boss over and over.
But this is not the way to do it... what happens when you get to the boss now of each act? It seems like the best choice would be to leave game and skip the boss!? Even if you dont skip...when you take awhile and kill a big bad act boss.. you should be thrilled, your killing as massive big guy, you know some good loot is about to drop.... now when we see these bosses were like...w/e /yawn.
Not the right move, its a step in the right direction, but not the right move.
Maybe Champions simply have a higher chance to drop the best rare's which have the potential to be the best items in the game, while boss's drop more unique's? Of course the increased chance to drop the rare of unique's would be small, maybe around a percent or two, maybe even a fraction of a percent. This would eventually add up though over the course of killing hundreds and thousands of each type
I scanned all 10 pages of this thread and haven't seen it mentioned... So I figured I'd point out something. Currently in the beta (patch 12), The first time you kill SK with a character and get the achievement... there is a greatly increased chance (although not 100%) of a rare (yellow) item to drop. Every kill after the first with the same character drops anything from 1-4 blue items.
Although this fact doesn't effect the end game farming aspect of the game, because you have to kill each boss once per difficulty to get through the game anyways... It would appear that if this mechanic of 'first time boss kills drop better loot then repeated kills' is implemented in the retail version, then the people wanting that 'epic' feeling in this thread should still get it... 4 times per boss, per character! =)
It may not be an end all solution that makes everyone happy, but if what I have stated above is in fact how it will work, I think it gives most people the best of both worlds and I like the design and idea of it.
I think that overall the endgame changes made from Diablo 2 are bad.
Doing a bossrun in D2 never felt useless. Even though no proper loot dropped, you still got a bunch of XP.
For those with an lvl 99 will get the point.
In D3 we will now wander to explore the whole map looking for rares, eventually going to the bossroom. So, if nothing dropped the entire game; How would you feel? I wouldn't feel any accomplishment -at all- And thus removing the incentive to do another run.
But thats not really what the discussion is about, however it does make it worse, scouting for some lesser demons instead of big dudes. Example; a rare is rare. So the chances are you will not find any when plowing through hordes of mobs. Eventually I think many will still do the boss after scouting for a rare, with a high chance of not finding proper loot either.
D3 Result: No XP, No Rares, No Loot (rares). -> No loot(Bosses) -----> /sadface, meh why did i do this again?
D2 Result: Yes XP, Care for Rares -> Higher chance of loot (Bosses) -----> /happyface, another run!

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...
I think its good and sticks with what Blizzard said.
They don't want the game turning into D2 where people just rush to bosses. Now you have to explore and find rares to get the drops which imo is more fun and not just a boring faceroll.
I would still like to see some reason to randomly go fight the bosses. I don't want to fight them once to progress the story and then hang around in the Stony Field (or whatever) killing champs. It seems to make a hell of a lot of sense in Inferno mode, but in basic difficulties I'm just not sure.
It's an awesome idea remember you now have TWO omg moments instead of one when your items drop. Even seeing a very rare elite/champion you'll know your going to get something tasty so finding that champion adds another dimension than knowing exactly where the boss is and just doing that over and over.
You can still kill bosses there is a chance for loot.... If you all can predict the drop % and think clearing a level is useless nothing is stopping you from killing a boss.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
D3 Result: No XP, No Rares, No Loot (rares). -> No loot(Bosses) -----> /sadface, meh why did i do this again?
D2 Result: Yes XP, Care for Rares -> Higher chance of loot (Bosses) -----> /happyface, another run!
I don't think Rares are going to be rare enough that you'll not see one going from boss to boss. And even if you don't, you also have a chance of seeing more than 1 rare mob before the boss when in D2 you are getting only one boss per run.
A great idea! It should incentivise moving on to the next difficulty, rather than farming that one boss over and over. Plus, I always got more excited getting a great drop from a random mob rather than getting all of them from the one boss you expect them from. Of course, maybe now I will expect them from the rares and champions...
I voted for bad! As much as I can understand it from a gameplay perspective, I can't help but feel that it detracts from the believability of the game universe. When your hero battles tirelessly through the endless mobs of demons to confront one of the prime evils, I expect him to drop Excalibur, or some battleaxe forged by demons with hellfire, something epic! So although I understand the arguments for the other side, I'm gonna play devil's advocate on this one.

I like the perspective you spun on the issue, I can agree with it but you'd have to remove WP's from the game or you'll just have boss farming and no longer have the endless mobs feel anymore.

I for one welcome this change, repeated boss runs gets very boring as stale after awhile. D2 you could farm certain areas in hell and get better drops just based on the zone, and even ''mini-bosses'' or rare spawns often dropped better 'rare' items, maybe not high end quality unique drops but you should still get better rares from just random trash mobs or rare spawns than you could boss drops. I believe even once people start getting into inferno, they've stated that you'll be able to farm anywhere any mobs and still get the same quality drops throughout.
It's actually going to be better to me because when you run into a rare, you know you'll be happy seeing it because it's gonna drop some sweet loot and makes you excited. When you just run to end boss, kill, and reload game it becomes a chore and you really only use a set of abilities to kill boss so you aren't really playing the game. Really good change imo.
I chose good also, it just makes thing more random, and in turn more replay- ability. In Diablo 2 i would literally just teleport to Mephisto's room, kill him, then teleport in chaos sanctuary and release diablo, kill him and repeat. Now i am being rewarded for going out and exploring the world of sanctuary? Score!

bringing this back to the top because it seems some people arent aware that boss runs are no longer going to happen in D3.

d3 concept is very similar as d2, and thats the reason why i think the whole system will be similar
