In pretty much any game that allows me to, i will min/max my character, and try to push the limits of how quickly you can level up, or get better gear etc; so in Diablo 2, i wouldn't use mercs, at all, until it was required (hell, usually only for infinity or the other pole-arm one.. and the auras) and it was only because i didn't want the merc stealing my xp! even if it was only a tiny bit, i JUST WOULDN'T HAVE IT. So i was wondering if anyone knows the plan with followers, will they take the xp from enemies they kill, presumably to level up? or does xp not affect them and i get it all even if they kill a mob (what i'm hoping for). It might seem finicky to some of you but i don't care it's how i think.
apologies in advance if it's been mentioned, i did do a forum search as well as google, couldn't find mention of it.

Edit: Okay so the zombies at the VERY beginning give 8exp with the templar. I dismissed him and they still gave 8exp. So it seems like no they don't actually steal your exp.

I believe I can answer your question, and I think you'll like the answer.
You don't have to level your followers at all, your level directly reflect in their level.
For example, say you never use a follower through normal, nightmare, and hell. But come Inferno you realize the extra body would be great while playing solo. You can go pick up a follower form town, and that follower will be the exact same level as if you'd used him/her all along.
Again, you do not have to level followers. They just mirror your level.

Also, to debunk your theory, sometimes it's better to take the follower if it will help you kill faster. Say you can kill 5 mobs a minute each granting 10xp. So that's 50xp a min. If he upped you to killing 10 a minute granting you a 100xp a minute but took 10% for himself that is still 90xp a minute, 40xp more than soloing. There's a whole math to everything, hell it'll be simpler to just solo it yourself

I agree with feminism. I don't think that it's right that for every dollar a man makes, a women gets 70 cents. Why do I only get 30 cents and some chick gets the rest?
Last I heard followers only had 30 levels, so it makes sense that they would have to start falling behind your level in order to reach level 30 around when you reach level 60. This still reflects your level in that it's the only thing that determines your followers level.
I am going off somewhat dated info though, but I haven't heard anything otherwise since.
Either way, you do not have to level them, and they don't steal exp.
EDIT: Hum.. I never really looked at my follower in the beta too closely.. Maybe I should, because an Exp bar would break my current views in place of that.

thanks for the info, even not knowing for certain, i'm happy knowing that you can forget about him until a certain point, which is probably what i will do. also noxious you make a good point, but there is also MF to consider, as people in d2 would have their mercs kill baal if they had better mf gear. not that i have a problem with that either way it's just i don't like that kind of mechanic where i have to do something fiddly just to get a better chance at an item. Anyway, im happy haha i was sure blizz would make the right choice anyway. can't wait!!!

Yeah, I just checked his UI.. Seems I missed the exp bar the whole time lol.
The endgame viable announcement was pretty sweet, that I saw. This whole Exp bit was never mentioned as far as I know though, like never. They just tossed it in the Beta without warning me first! Who do they think they are.. Geez..

it's nice that they even added the xp bar haha you never knew how close your d2 merc was to levelling. So it seems the xp is in sync with your own, and killing a monster with your char, or your follower, will provide both of you with equal xp, BUT the followers xp is tweaked to accommodate for max level being 30. or not, if its max level ends up being 60.

I have a follow up question: if a follower kills mob by himself, do you still get loot from it or no? For example in WoW if pet kills mob without you touching him, you get nothing.
in WoW i always considered that to be in a group of bugs that always needed to be fixed... along with vanish not working.. i imagine in such a loot oriented game you will get the loot, in fact i think i remember seeing it happen in a lets play of the beta.

So since when followers in D2 stole XP? Everything I found about this in D2 resumed to this:
1. The merc never "steals" eperience from you, you get the same amount if you have a merc or not.
2. If you kill a monster when you have a merc, he will get the same amount of experience as you do. (Not 100% sure)
3. If your merc kills a monster, he will get 3 times as much experience as you do.
So while he could level up faster or slower, you were unaffected. Looks to me like you didn't want to use mercs in D2 for no reasons whatsoever.
I had never heard of Mercs in Diablo II stealing XP either, but it's something I may not have noticed. I guess I could go test it out, if I weren't so lazy. <.<

In wow this is actually intended to make sure that pet classes cant just stand afk and get exp from pet kills.
Well, yes and no - just to be clear I am TOTALLY guessing - not going to stand here and talk like I've got the inside scoop but:
I was very happy to see that they would be end game viable - its like adding eq slots to the character - more places to think about gear = good for me!
You COULD make them end game viable BUT more in a bullet-sponge kind of way = double/triple/whatever this HPs from level 30 but dont scale their skills in any way past 30. They'd make a nice distraction but arent really going to help you kill anything.
It would "feel" right to me if my merc contributed in some meaningful way in keeping me alive other than a speed bump and while they should never approach a character in terms of killing power it would be nice if a properly geared merc could kill a similarly leveled mob in short order but be killed most of the time when outmanned 3 to 1 or more.

They don't steal exp but they do level currently.
They also announced followers would be usable end game.
