I think the problem here is that everyone is stuck on the typical pirate archetype.
All it takes to be a pirate is to be an ocean-faring (and even this is pretty loose) thief. You don't have to have a Pirates of the Carribean jolly roger running around. Or even a spooky ghost pirate. Or whatever.
I know this is hard to grasp, but you can make a pirate into whatever the fuck you want.
Since the Diablo universe has trade over the seas, and there are plenty of amoral types, it would be crazy if there WEREN'T pirates of some type. Further, as I mentioned before, they are explicitly stated to exist.
If you can wrap your head around the idea of a pirate who isn't a massive stereotype, maybe you can begin to think of them in terms of how they might fit into Diablo. It's not hard.
And as for Mr. Final Fantasy, my point is that it's subjective. You said it doesn't fit the Diablo universe because of some pretty specific traits, which happened to be shared by many universes with the firearm-fantasy mix (including FF). If you think guns don't suit Diablo, you don't think they suit Diablo, but those reasons are bunk, and deserved the debunking I gave.
As for the whole gun debate, I can see where Savages is coming from, but at the same time, I believe the first firearm that you can call a "gun" did exist in medieval times.
And then lore-wise, we have a barbarian who had an idea to make a gun. Is it unrealistic to believe that 20 years later, no one else thought of the same idea or even created one?
As for style, when I first watched the Demon Hunter trailer, the first thing I thought was "Wow, they're really stepping it up with new weaponry and techniques to kill demons". So it wasn't farfetched to me that guns would've worked in the trailer or game, plus the 1-handed crossbows had very very similar designs to ancient guns in their handles.
And if a Druid worked in D2 (Miraculix from Asterix) why not a Pirate?
And I altso said, put everything you know about a pirate in mind behind you. This doesnt mean a sea-born pirate, but the essence of a pirate.
A mixture of melee and range.
Pirates in general are lame, but so are Druids. Making them FIT the Diablo universe its totally possable. But having like Miraculix in Diablo is a no no, and having Jack Sparrow is altso a no no.
Gee guys, cant you use your imagination
And there are PIRATE swords in Sanctuary.. Where did they come from?
Edit: I hope this thread doesnt get locked, my latest 5 threads have bin and there is almost nothing more to discuss that already have bin settled in this forum.
I dunno, what would a pirate have to gain from this? Coming off of his boat, which I doubt their is an awful lot of meaningful sea travel right now, and becoming basically a highwayman? It just seems like a stretch of logic. Also what would a thief care about stopping evil? All the other classes have a purpose and reason.

haha, I remember someone else mentioning a thief before and I came to the same bewilderment.
Why would I thief go out and try to kill demons?
He would be in town stealing your stash!!!

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
A pirate I can't see in the game for reasons of armor looks and skills. But a bandit type would be a hell alot of fun. As for the gun idea. It would b fun but medieval guns took upwards of a minute to reload ... to me and im sure everyone else here a Monte to reload a gun while a quill veins is raping your ass is not a fun idea.
And to those who likes pirate could play DH with bola shots, those are gonna be like cannons.

We're being careful to maintain the gothic/renaissance theme, but we are attempting to push the visual and conceptual boundaries of what that means. If we want to go with technical accuracy on an Earthly basis, rockets have been around since (at least) the 13th century. This is in the prime of the European Middle Ages, including The Renaissance, as well as the Gothic architecture from which it came, and Diablo is so heavily based. So if we're using our own human history as a backdrop, rockets aren't anything out of the realm of possibility. And if you want to get crazy we use the term missiles all over the place, but in modern military terms a missile is a more advanced form of rocket, with built in homing/guidance systems.
So back to what we are doing - in Diablo III, which is influenced by but decidedly not Earth, rockets are simply defined as 'alchemical fireworks', as are grenades. The world of Sanctuary doesn't have gunpowder, but what it does have is magic and use of chemical elements or reagents in vague amalgamations. Haphazard creations by clever and desperate men and women, working each day to craft and create anything they can to fight off the coming invasion.
To clarify, there are no "rocket launchers" in the game. What we're referring to are skills that simply use the word "rocket". Upon seeing the spell effects of these so called 'rockets' you will likely immediately say "that's not a rocket!" Because it isn't, not in the sense of what you'd associate with the modern projectile. When you see the effect you'd be more inclined to understand that these aren't rockets in any Earthly definition, but are using the term as an alternate to 'missile' more for clarity of description than anything, in that they are using a explosive reagent to fuel their destructive power.
But what would be very intriguing is having one of the next characters be perhaps a Prince of Lord of Hell who's changed sides for whatever reason. Think of perhaps a Vampire or succubus, could be worked in lore wise. Has to look remotely human in order to allow citizens of New Trisham to accept him/her but beyond that it could be very fun.
I think the expansion class is pretty much a lock to be something similar to the Druid in Diablo 2. A character based off of transformations and then skills that can be used in/out of those transformations.
I personally think that'd be pretty awesome too... assuming they do a lot better job of it than they did in Diablo 2.

Yeah yeah, I was thinking about it due to the pirate swords in D3, thats all.
And ppl at diablo 3 wants to have deathknight back (edit: back = wasnt he a enemy in D1?), a hybrid between vampire and a paladdin.
Most dislike it, they say its too much "wow" over it.
I have never played WOW more then 20 minutes, so to me it doesnt matter.
Its a shield, blood drain, dark aura type of character.
I think they could have fun with a pirate type if they were to introduce a blunderbuss type weapon or a technomagical equivalent and incorporated the superstitious aspect of pirates as the impetus to seek the star (legends are known to have been very powerful in the minds of pirates) but there are plenty of problems around this. One being that this class may step on the toes of existing classes too much.
On a side note, cutlasses are not 'pirate swords' they are swords that some pirates used; not quite the same thing. As to some of the other ideas, in one of the Blizzcon panels discussing the Demon Hunter the talked about how she started out as a half demon but ultimately decided that all classes would be human and only human, so no vampires/turned demons/fallen angels/whatever. Cool ideas, but not going to show up.
I think the OP has something here, but not sure it will pan out.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
Just because "pirate swords" are in Diablo 3 doesn't mean that they are in fact pirate swords. Could anyone not have come up with the same design besides a pirate? Just because pirates of old wielded them doesn't actually coin them being pirate-only swords, plenty of others wielded such.

There are tons of other class types that would work for Diablo
Warlord (melee/fighter)
Necro/Warlock (caster)
Thief/Bard (melee/range/buff/debuffer)
Cleric/Paladin (melee/caster)
Druid (melee/caster)
Shaman (melee/caster)
Ranger (range/pet)
Sorcerer/Illusionist/Invoker (essentially a dif wizard type with dif spells)
for he to-day that sheds his blood with me
shall be my brother..."

Then at least they could erase the pirate swords in the sanctuary if no Pirates exist.
