Yeah, interesting catch there...thanks for sharing! While it may be in the game, I also have a hard time imagining how it would work with the camera angle. I suppose it could have something to do with a boss fight....some water ability that drowns you if you don't move. Aka WoW's don't stand in bad stuff.
Yeah I've seen that. Water level might be a bit of jump, it says 'breathmeter'... I think its more likely to relate to a poisoness gas. I think a swimming level is highly unlikely.
The first time I saw this I got very excited, however the more I think about it the less likely it seems it will appear in the release at all and it has been scrapped. I just can't think of a useful application for it... unless there is a boss you have to starve of breathe maybe?? I just don't know...
Or perhaps blizz intentionally named it that in case the client got leaked (which did) just to confuse us and let we debate among each other . I doubt that's the case. But it really does look like a health bar. Can anyone check beta vids and compare please. I can't afford to watch vids with my limited cap... <_<
My guess is it will be a quest you have to complete in a certain amount of time, before you run out of breath.... Instead of just placing a timer, they create a breath meter to make it feel more realistic.
I could also see it as someone mentioned above, a scenario such as the sewers of somewhere with a gas present in them. There are certain "checkpoints" you reach without any gas present, but when progressing through the gas, you only have a certain amount of breath before you start taking damage.
My guess is this will play into an event.. or quest, I doubt we have water as a normal mechanic in the game, but I could easily see some kind of fun and unique quest in the game that uses this. I was kind of happen we would have some fun things like this in d3 to change up the pace (like the random events).
I really dont think we should say we hate this until we try it ^_~
Basically there would be no logical way to actually dive under water, so as others have mentioned it may just be a part of various air-less compartments, heck it could even be flooded areas.
For all y'all talking about it being a health bar for some kind of temporary companion, just a reminder:
It IS called a breath meter in the game files.
But yeah I agree poisonous gas or some other kind of similar thing seems more likely. Not that I have a problem with water stuff, it would be interesting to see how they did it if they did.
Yeah, I saw that a while back, and since it comes from the data set it doesn't mean it will be implemented in-game (there are plenty of examples of things that are in the data set that are not being implemented at all). That being said, it is interesting to speculate.
I hate the swimming aspect of most games. Its normally just frustrating. Anyway, how totally ridiculous would it be to see a barbarian in full gear with a massive 2-hander swimming.

Excuse me? You're now saying that we can't state strong, completely unknowledgable opinions about Diablo 3 just because we've never played the game and don't know what we're talking about? Well I never...
*SPOILER, do not read further..*
I think the breathmeter is a clock, just saying "if you dont get outta here within x minutes, your gonna die!" I do remember there was timed events in the D3 wowbox.. This could be it, just a diffrent approch. And the name "breathmeter" might be just a coded name for "time+life".
so we can get hit by giant flame breaths. exploding ice globes, smashed in the face by arcane orbs, stand in and get poisoned by gas, smashed all over with an axe, but by god, the true death to us will be not being able to hold our breath.
well IF (which I think most of us agree it wont) but IF it is water, you wont be swimming, you would simply be "weighted" to the bottom of the floor, and we would have a full screen effect to make it look like we are underwater...
I dunno it's a far stretch. There are lots of irrelevant left over images in the beta files. There is one for D2 runes, one of a guy drinking alcohol, some place holder concept art, like 2-3 iterations of charms. It could just be anything or nothing at this point.

The article is almost 2 weeks old but I didn't see this before now. Did you guys know about this? Or was this just not D-fans worthy?

Now if they change the camra system to more like DDO, then it would work great, but unless they change the current camra system, it Isn't viable.
With that said, if they change the camra system, I would love for there to be water areas in D3.
The fate of Frederick Barbarossa, anyone?
