Use Ventrilo or Teamspeak. They are the best at taking minimal resources int he background while playing. Skype and others are not the right program to use, plus Skype steals your bandwidth and allocates it for other call routing. Nice huh?
Stick with Vent and TS, best out there.
Yeah I call shenanigans. My ping has never jumped due to skype, ever. It's always 30-60 no matter what. Hell, we've even had 10+ people in a call for RBGs and I didn't notice at all.
Here's what I am referring to, and only learned of what Skype does when an internet security seminar was held at my work place. http://tips4pc.com/networking/is-skype-slowing-down-your-internet.htm Only shenanigans is what Skype is doing to unsuspecting users. If you don't have any issues using it, and it does exactly what you want it to do, by all means go for it! You've been warned
Quote from the article:
"Unfortunately Skype relies on its ability to steal your Internet bandwidth and the programmers at Skype have worked very hard to make it impossible for you to disable sharing your bandwidth. Even the lawyers at Skype are in on it—the End User License Agreement (EULA) you agree to when you download Skype says you have to let them use your bandwidth whenever you run Skype.
There’s really only one solution to Skype slowing down your Internet: turn off Skype when you’re not using it. You can’t just mark yourself as away—you need to shutdown Skype and exit its tray icon. For most users, this is inconvenient, so you may want to consider only shutting down Skype when you need all of your bandwidth."
Well another outlet that I take, is by adding it as a non-steam game and get the Steam overlay going on, as a vast majority of my gaming friends use steam and it just makes things so convenient to reach out to others. I see a lot of my friends doing this with SC2 and I do it for BFBC2. I will also use Skype as well. I don't really like vent all that much when you just want to talk with one or two people...but I do hope they just build in a voip feature to make it care free.
