Not completely random but random enough this is a waste of time.
Not to mention that the hardware they want to sample will change based on what they're getting / seeing / wanting to see; that is to say, it's going to shift around a lot in order to be useful.
I had a problem with my Profile System Checker for beta opt in. It wouldnt work on my new laptop. I tried EVERYTHING. I eventually tried on my old computer just to see if it was my router/internet connection. It worked fine. So I kept working and working on my laptop trying to get it to submit. No dice. I finally put a support ticket in. They gave me a series of steps to try, none worked. They then asked me to submit DXDIAG.TXT and MSINFO.TXT for review. I did that. This is there response:
Hi Nicholas,
The only thing I see that Might be giving you issues is AVG, you might try uninstalling it then try again. Just know that the stats of your computer are not THAT important to getting into the beta. It is basically kind of a lottery, pretty random so I wouldn't stress about it to much. You are opted in for beta testing and that is the most important thing

I notice the few buzz words of "not that important" and "kind of" but I really dont believe you will get ruled in or out based solely on your system.
It is true that NO ONE has gotten an invitation unless it was F&F?
I have also heard of people being invited to F&F but not having the beta added to their account. I should re-include F&Fs into the data because of this. This means that they should get an invite, but they didn't because of their system/account specs.

Very interesting. I like your notes: "kind of" and "not THAT important." Heh.
Whether or not anyone feels like it is a waste of time does not affect the goal of the topic... It is not you that has to analyze the information and spend time on it. I'm between jobs and have some spare time, so I wouldn't mind practicing my skills in the mean time.
There is no way any information gathered from this could be of HARM.
As an update: I have around 13 data sets, but 0 with BETA=TRUE :/
This isn't going to tell us anything useful for the future. Here's why:
Blizzard, like all companies, invites for betas based off of their current needs.
There are two specific needs: Testing bugs and concurrency.
Concurrency will tell them WHEN they can do a new wave and how large that wave should be.
Bug reports will tell them who to invite.
So let's use as a theoretical and VERY VERY heavily oversimplified example the case where Blizzard has 1000 people in their beta currently. Concurrency is only at 50%, so they want to get that back up so they calculate that they can safely invite another 500 people. So now they have to pick who to invite, so they ask their qa teams what bugs are outstanding and currently evading them. THey find that they currently have a huge bug where they have 250 reports of people playing as the Wizard who are crashing when completing the blacksmith's quest arc. They check these reports, and find out that the following 3 statistics are true:
1) 150 of these people use Windows Vista
2) 50 of these people use Mac OS 10.6
3) 125 of the people use NVidia Graphics cards
So they then take that information and tell their program that randomly selects beta testers that they need 500 people, and they want 300 of them to use Vista, 100 to use Mac OS 10.6, and 250 to use NVidia cards. The program then filters through it's applicants until it finds 500 people who will make all three of the above requirements met and sends out invites.
Ok just to clarify...after you do this "study" and find what x-factor you are looking for are you then going to go out and buy that same vid card, other game not on your account, cpu speed upgrade just to have a chance at getting into the beta? Sounds like a lot to do for a better chance. just mho.

Courage isn't the absence of fear, it's the presence of fear yet the will to go on.
This is like measuring the size of your penis. Sure it's nice to know, but in the end, is it really worth it ? Think about it.
Anyway I'm sure it's mostly random or they'll just change how they pick participants. The only thing might be system specs. But yeah I won't make too much fuss about it, no way in hell I'll resub to world of nolife craft just to get a beta inv. The beta isn't even that long, oh wait, that is if there will even BE an beta. Which from the looks of it, looks like never. First they announce a beta which isn't there and cause unnecessary hype, then they delay the game right after? like what did you smoke? lol. It's just provoking really. So no I won't make a lot of fuss to get myself into this beta, I'm sure in the end the LIMITED invites comes down to luck, with a few tiny factors that impact it. No intention to rant here, it's just my opinion. The better question is WHEN will the beta be ? How about asking this, even though they already said it was supposed to begin. When will we be seeing those invites, more importantly now that the game is postponed. Like I said no fuss, but that to me is more interesting, to know WHEN, because it feels lame to be excited over the beta I don't know when I'll see, let alone trying to get into it.
Wow let this person do some statistical analysis lol... that's what this topic is about, if you do not want to contribute, simply don't bother posting... Is there a way to filter this threat? =X
I'l tell you right now your tool is going to have way too small a sample to figure this out. Think about it: Blizzard might accept a whole slew of, say, shitty PC and Mac computers in the first phase, then second phase might decide to get high performance systems, etc... so your idea has a lot of assumptions, namely that it's a linear method of invitation. I think you can find better ways to manage your time, and by the time you get any reasonable data, the game will be out a month later. People are REALLY impatient eh..
Man, I havent been logging into this thing since 2008, been member since 2006. And now I'm a new guy again. But to the topic, I find this very interesting and will pitch in.
