Blizzard comments on the current state of Diablo 3 FnF Beta and as well as the progress towards Closed Public Beta

1. Start with a small sample audience to test stability
2. Take bug and crash report feedback; act on them quickly
3. Release new patches to make some very necessary changes in the small test environment
4. Keep testing stability while adding new battle.net/infrastructure components
5. If everything is running incredibly smooth after steps 1-4, invite people from the general public to open the flood gates on stress testing and get focused gameplay feedback/bug reports
This is a very layman's description, but the point is we have to slowly throttle in more people to test the game as we continue to create new builds and work out new battle.net functionality. Once the environment is stable and many of the core features are there, we then start to invite the masses.
I'd feel remiss in not mentioning this: we absolutely want everyone to play this game as soon as possible. But to make that a reality, we must first excel in both content and deliverance. (So let's put on our classics and we'll have a little dance, shall we?)

Basically, yea. We're getting really close! That's the good news
Sadly we heard the we are "really close" line about 3 weeks ago and nothing has happened yet, so I wouldn't get your hopes up until that changes from "really clse" to "go check your b.net accounts."
I know we are 3 weeks closer to beta being released, but we could still be 3 weeks away for all we know. Just have to sit back and wait. We are also 3 weeks closer to the final game being released
All he did was confirm what the most intelligent of us have known since F&F has started: They want to stabilize all the bugs before they start closed beta.
Edit: By this I mean he confirmed they are on step 4 of the process and currently smoothing out the bugs.
"F&F" IS the beta... lol what is so hard about grasping that concept...
This. People keep complaining that the beta wasn't in Q3. It was. The beta is currently going on right now. It is the closed beta right now, really. It's just that the only people to be invited to the closed beta has been F&F.
In any case, it is not in alpha. It is in beta. Beta is now.
Well, my guess from this is that we probably shouldn't be expecting a beta before the DH resource system has received its update, and the AH is no longer reseting the blacksmith. So hopefully Tuesday is D3 patch day and we can start speculating again. Until those two things are done I've lost my optimistic outlook in terms of 'omg beta any day!'.

You make a good point. Personally, I don't think closed beta will begin until the second week of October, or basically another month. If they're changing the resource system, then there's a lot of balancing of skills they'll have to do, etc. It adds significantly to the timeline. Oh well, can't do anything about it. I just hope the game isn't pushed back until 2012.
People also don't seem to understand that you can make a statement - then, as you make changes to the game (Chaotic as coding is!) something happens that is major, and delays things. Blizzard doesn't want people to be unhappy with them.. no one does.
Sure, there are marketing situations, releases of other games, etc to be considered, but in general, they're not sitting on their hands, cackling on the forums saying 'Ha ha! Those suckers who want into beta SURE are suffering since I told them next week, and it's not happening yet! ha ha ha!' - That's just silly, lol.
Things like balance testing aren't going to delay the closed beta phases. Only bugs. So the DH resource isn't likely to impact that since it isn't like they're implementing a new resource, they're just changing the regen rates/methods, the costs, the skill acquisition levels, etc.
That isn't something that will delay the closed beta, that is something that they WANT the closed beta for.
The things that will delay the closed beta are things like the AH and game joining bugs. Once the current bugs are a bit closer to ironed out then we'll see the beta start - could be anytime in the next few weeks.
But no, you can all be fairly confident that the beta not being out has little to nothing to do with them choosing to redesign aspects of the DH resource setup.
You guys very well might be right that Blizz had FnF in mind when they announced the beta would come out in Q3, but if so it was a little disingenuous of them not to say so.

It'll be another week.
I'm sick of hearing that line.
Next week is the last week. I know that the beta will not come out this week.
www.nerdyblog.com - Great website and great Diablo III streams and Skype chat!
Ok, maybe that was a silly question.

Sign of Beta?
^^^^ this, i overlooked the rest of the meaning to "good news"
<_<
The bad news is it only runs on an atari 2600
