Reading this thread makes me go more to the point that unique names makes no sense. I mean there are lots of people named the same thing IRL. What if no one IRL was named the same and this is just the first name we are talking about. There are bound to be people that are named the same, would be stupid to limit the names. It would mean the names would become longer and longer. Also people would end up with names that doesn't even make sense, just so they could create their character and play.
I believe that your account name will be visible to players looking to join your game / in your game, so that your identity can remain constant without needing to name all your characters the same. Plus the banners, yo.
Unique names have great benefits, but the fact is the community is much larger then the number of good names. A friends list exists so you can find players you liked again.
By account name do you mean RealID? I wonder how people would feel about that. Or do we have an account on top of our characters?
Also, I wanted to note that the funniest thing back on the D3 post about this was the people advocating for non-unique names had the most random names like xXCowKillzorzXx... I was thinking: why the heck do you want non-unique names if you chose that.

Not your RealID... Each 'CD Key' will create an account name, which I believe will share the banner, and then (up to ten) character names under that. And I was picturing whenever your name is shown it would be (Account) Character, or some similar formatting.
Correct me if someone has more up to date info? I know there are hardcore options on the banner, yet clearly each account can have HC and non-HC chars.
Non-unique names are a GREAT idea in my opinion... I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated trying to access a community site or playing a game and I cannot get the name "Savage." I've even resulted to using "Savages" but that is 99% taken as well. I've been gaming with this name for 14 years since I first started playing video games but apparently it's a very common name. I HATE having to resort to random numbers and letters. Even my stream, I had to make Savages, and most other streaming sites I can't register because I refuse to put random numbers and letters.
Yep, but it's better than the alternative... and that's having even the name ch@0t1c taken within 5 minutes by someone else
Not at all.. Diablo 2 didn't allow the use of @ or 0. They should keep it unique Alpha only. Once you choose a name "Axeslayer" just as an example, no one else should be able to use it.
I think you missed the point. With unique names, by the time that you go to create Chaotic, it will be taken. Even if you try to do an offshoot of the name like ch@0t1c, someone will have taken the name, meaning that it's near impossible for you to get a dictionary word like that for your name. It might suck to have others using your name, but it's probably better than you not being able to use your name.

See my forum name? This has been my online handle since SC1, have yet to find it taken anywhere in the world for anything I register to. Unfortunately I think your handle is a common phrase, maybe upgrade it to two words

Actually originally it was CaptainSavage, based on the comic book, but I quickly went with just Savage
My dad is a huge comic book / action figure collector, so I skimmed through his one comic book pricing catalog and found the name as a kid haha
