Are you... are you suggesting someone gains an advantage by using these companions?
Yes they do, they get a companion that collects every tiny bit of gold on ground and you can keep on moving, also they don't lose time on moving to corners to loot up the gold... so they are faster, clearly an advantage.
First, the companions only last about 2 minutes. Not a huge advantage to begin with, even less when it doesn't last very long. Not to mention, you can sell the scroll for 12 gold, if I remember correctly. Who's to say it won't be more fiscally responsible to sell the scroll and just run over the gold on your own?
Second, of all the possible things that can happen to give some people an advantage over others (bots, hacks, quad-boxing, chinese gold farmers) I think that this is the least of your worries.
Third, not all the companions are cute and cuddly. I saw one guy get a bat, and I thought that was pretty cool. And when I did see a bunny, all I did was chuckle because it reminded me of the bunnies in D2 in act 5 running around.
So wait, you're telling me there are NO BUNNIES at all in Sanctuary? None?
Really?
WTF are you on?
Edit: Sorry, forgive the tone. Just a little baffled by people saying that having cute animals in the world takes away from the vibe.
To me it does the opposite, it makes the gruesome feel more gruesome and to be honest if they were permanent I'd think it would make the characters feel more... human. Afterall, if I had to go out every day and kill hundreds of demons and watch people get slaughtered and animated and then have to kill them again... I'd want a cute companion with me just to help keep me centered.
In fact, the heroes of Diablo 2 might not have all gone quite so insane if they'd had bunnies.
But really, the thought of there being NORMAL animals that haven't been corrupted just helps to make the corruption feel all that more real and present.
I agree with the OP, and I don't think that "it is optional" is a valid argument in this case. Bad options can absolutely ruin games, and even small things like this can chip away at the feel of Diablo. The aesthetics in this game are very important, and I don't think this is conducive to it.
Darby... how is it not conducive to the atmosphere? The atmosphere is a realistic world being invaded and ocrrupted by horrific demonic forces.... how would people having pets and there being non-corrupt animals still left in the world take away from that?
Well, firstly, I suppose I just don't want it to get to WoW levels of companion pets, which to me overloaded the game with it's frivolity. There was very little in the way of frivolous character customization in the Diablo series, and I am afraid of it getting to that level. I think that's really what I meant when I said "chip away at the feel of Diablo". I don't want to sound like I have some sort of WoW panic, because I enjoyed WoW for many years, but it did not have a disciplined approach to aesthetics.
Diablo has always been rooted in a gothic realism, and I really hope that this doesn't take away from it, even in a slight way. These types of things can compound themselves until it gets ridiculous. I must admit that this by far not the worst thing in the world, but I would be happier if companion pets were not in the game.

Except you are wrong. "It is optional" Is always a valid argument when it is truly optional. If you do not like it and you do not think it adds to environment and you think its going to destroy the game, then you don't need to use it and it's a you problem.
Deal with it, if you don't want to use them it's more vendor gold for you.

Well, like I said, I personally don't like the feel of the aesthetic. If other people are using them, it would still be detrimental to the aesthetic, in my opinion.
Again, I would like to re-iterate that this is obviously not a game destroying issue by any means.
We don't even know for sure that you can see other players using them...
But most of them seem to be quite fitting animals, ravens bats snakes and spiders... how would seeing any of those make it seem any less atmospheric than all the doodad-critters that were in d2?

I guess just the idea of them following you around. What's their angle?! WHAT ARE YOU THEY UP TO
I dunno, it's hard for me to add on to what I have already said. I guess really all I can do is sum it up by saying that I am just not a fan of it. But at least I'm not the asshole saying "I'M NO LONGER OGNNA BUY THIS GAEM BLIZZ GAWD". =D
They already said there was going to be an affix or suffix that increase gold collection range so? companions will be useless? /end thread?
Make them anything you want but once u get gear they will just be for customization, and if someone wants a bunny let them have them! If someone wants a goblin? Let them have them!
I suggest they put these on the Blizz store for like 5$ each and do the donation to disaster relief or some charity or something. This will make them optional eye candy, and make gamers spend money on something that has some positive social impact.

And i guarantee within a year you'll be able to buy it from the blizzard shop ... Don't you people see why they were introduced? Just have an auto pickup option and leave all the shiny pets and assorted garbage to wow.
I would just like to point out that this is a co-op game, so another guy with a pet has no "advantage" over you, and if ever he does get the benefit of a pet, he has it for five minutes, and any time he saves with it will be nullified by the gold cost of one of those scrolls if he buys them, and he will not have that advantage often if he only uses ones he finds.

Ensuring you still get your reward but can focus on doing your duty - slaughtering the masses of demons.

One of the possible companions IS a bunny prodiii...
When you see a cow grazing in town are you going to have a heart attack?
Normal animals exist... sheesh.....
