At the moment, the only way to make your own build work, without using set items, is using the Legacy of Nightmare set. So in order to actually make your own build work, you have to spend lots of hours farming for anchient parts of the build you're looking for.
For example, all the "play your own way" builds they keep showing on the frontpage would never be possible for a casual player, since they will never manage to play enough to find a full set of anchient items.
I think there should be an easier way to make fun builds using whatever legendaries you want. There are so many fun legendary powers I want to try out, but can't really test it without making a LoN build for it.
Leave a comment on what you are thinking about this. Not really sure how Blizzard would do this, but they are good at comming up with ideas
I guess easiest way would be by letting LoN give a reduced amount of damage increase for non-ancient. Like "100% increase damage for every ancient item equipped, non-ancient gives you half amount".

I like that idea... last time I tried LoN build I was missing 3 ancient items, and 2 ancients were actually terrible rolls. Pretty sure that getting 50% for normal legendary items would have made the build more fun.
I think you overestimate how hard it is to get gear, even ancients, in this game. A casual player can most certainly finish a LoN set before seasons end, or whenever they want on nonseason.
LoN sets can take 3-7 days farming casualy if you got a build capable of doing GR 60-65 in less than 7 minutes. I do however like the idea that non-set items give you half the bonus, it helps testing out if an idea could work.
I think the main point is for specific builds. For instance, where you need very high CDR. It could be very time consuming to find decent ancient legendary items with high CDR rolls along with other complementary stats. If normal items gave 50%/2% then you'd still be looking for the ancient but you'd also be able to play the build decently. Hell, any % damage increase is better than 0%.
It's currently a all or nothing due to how normal legendary items are treated. Make it all or some for a smoother transition.

"Before seasons end" is quite long time though^^ I completed my journey and took gr75 within 2 weeks (played like 5-6 days straight during that time) and I don't think I've anything remotely close to a LoN set. That's 70-84 hours spent (14h/day). If I'm only able to play at max 2h per day then it would take me 35+ days to get there. That's just too long for someone playing casual. Mind you, I'm not saying it should be easier to get maxed, I'm simply thinking the threshold should be less steep. Say you've 6/13 ancient, that's 600% increase damage. If normals gave 50% you'd end up with 950% which makes the build much more viable but far from optimal. Maybe 25% would be a better number but whatever, I'm just making points
also what is your definition of viable? Any build can run on normal, there for it is viable.
I think whatever your goal is. If t7 is the go to for farming then if the build can do t7 it would be viable. In my case if a build can run t13 and/or is super fun it's viable^^ or I could just push it as long as I can in GR, then it doesn't really matter.

I have yet to get an Ancient set item for my WD this season, and he's almost paragon 600.

There is an easy way
It's called "The Thrill" Conquest
except you leave out those LoN rings. It's simple, take any LoN build, figure out a couple rings to use and just take off. The most fun I've had in months, I look FORWARD to another g/rift

With a month to go in Season 5, I started playing this game. Got schooled by the clan, played a copy-cat build and then branched out to a LoN build - which I finished and almost made a stash tab in the short time. But I did work, I used the cube, I gambled, etc

I am sure you can try plenty of fun builds at lower difficulties.
Not all builds you think of should be usable or efficient at the high end of difficulty.

You need to understand how LoN builds actually work.
Basics:
100% for each ancient. 13 max
4% damage reduction for each ancient 13 max
you need a skill that is high damage and doesn't rely on heavy resource spending.
This is why you see skills like bom
bardment and fan of knives.
Example:
i ran a simulated a LoN zero dogs WD
9billion max damage with 800 paragon
this still under performed to a LoN bomb sader 75 trillion

THEY HATE US, CUZ THEY AIN'T US

I think i am mid 500 paragons and almost have a half set of hell tooth and everything else ancient.
