So looking over all the UI stuff, it looks like the UI currently consists of a skill mapped to left mouse button, one to right mouse button and then numbers 1-4 as well as something else (I think it's the health potion) linked to some other key.
Does this mean they have eliminated the ablity of characters to have a "basic attack"? I'm not exactly sure I understand how this works, say you're playing a Wizard and want to use the spell that magically enhances your weapon, either it means it does more spell damage, or that you can somehow swing your weapon. I've never seen a video or screenshot of any of the caster classes using their weapon, so I'm assuming at this point that they can't.
If other classes can't use melee weapons, does that mean that basically all melee weapons are solely for the barbarian? They have sure shown a lot of weapons at this point and it seems strange to think that they would go to that much effort for just the one class, but it kind of looks like weapons will be the unique item for each class, so maybe it makes sense.
The one thing I'm confused by is in one of the pictures it looked like the RMB had a link somehow to a second ability, I'm not sure what that means exactly and I'm hoping someone will have some insight on this. I'm assuming that Wizards and Witch Doctors will only cast spells and have no physical attacks, but if someone knows different, please let me know.
there are basic attacks. just not auto attack. look at the newly leaked beta images. the wizard has basic attack equiped on left mouse button.
So when you equip the basic attack though it takes up one of your skill slots? That doesn't seem like it's going to be popular for any class. At level 1-5 you have basic attack as one of your skills and then you only get to use one other? Or is basic attack something outside of the equipped skills so you can use both it and the skills at the same time without having to go in and swap stuff?

I think you forgot how Diablo 2 was. Your left click was automatically mapped to moving/ auto attacking... however you could remap this into move/skill (if the click lands on a suitable target).

I don't at all forget how this worked in D2. What I'm saying is, there is no command to fast swap between skills now, so if you have attack as one of your skills out of six, that means one fewer skill you can have active at that point.
Maybe I'm not making my concern clear, but I'm not sure exactly how else to explain it. To use a skill it has to be one of your 2-6 active skills right? If one of your 2-6 active skills is attack, that means you're down to 1-5 other skills, and that's pretty significant, even at the highest level that would be crippling. Maybe for Barbs it does what it did in D2, if you have no mana/fury your attack skill reverts to basic attack, but I'm not sure how that would work for other classes that don't have a good melee option.
Maybe it will work like D&D 4th Edition where you have "at-will" abilities that if you don't have anything else you can do it automatically does that, like the standard Magic Missile type spell for Wizard, shooting for the DH, whacking things for the Barb, etc.

There has to be standard attack. What else would the Barbarian do when he has no rage? Sit there and get hit?
Certain abilities such as cleave will generate fury and cost no fury.

My place really was here. I was too foolish and stubborn to notice. But, what I truly hoped for then was here. Why do I always realize it When I've already lost it.
The left click will be the same as diablo 2 and be mapped to basic attacking by default... consdiering basic attacks are almost abslutely pointless.... I'm fairly confident that most classes will swap these out for other skills.
The reason auto-attack is no longer visible is because Blizzard opted to remove the hot-swap from the visible UI. If I remember correctly, however, the "basic attack" icon (whether it be a fat ax, a bow, or a wand for Wizards) is red with a sword on it, and maybe something else. I'm sure left-click is still map-able to a skill.

They have already said many times that you can change your left-click action with the Tab Key or mousewheel. This will surely be customizable in the Control Configurations menu.

I think this guy gets it. There are low level attacks for each class that are designed to do low damage and have no resource cost. The basic attack in the topic is irrelevant and probably is not even listed in a chars skill tree.
1-4 are for skills, 5 is for potions, and then you have Left and Right Mouse. I think they took out the Tab/Mousewheel swap for Right Mouse when they limited you to 6 active skills.
I have seen basic attacks for barbarian and demon hunter in the official gameplay videos. I cannot find their basic attacks in any screens of the skill trees. Has anybody seen game play videos of the other three chars using basic attacks?
I think wizard's magic missile may be their basic attack.

This is 7 slots (6 skills + auto attack).
